rodeo yeehaw

Oy oy oy. This week was busy, and I did not get to properly introduce you to my newest book. I'm sorry, plz suffer through another self-pimping post, because all I got to do on Wednesday was slap the cover up here and tell you to buy it. Now you get detail. :D

I'm really, really excited and nervous about this book. It isn't firemen. :| It's rodeo boys and I had to do research and ask people stuff. But I love how it came out and the best part is that I worked in AMNESIA. :D You cannot just write amnesia into every plot, despite what soap operas and fanfiction say.

C'moooooon, it's the weekend, and you need something to read.

Teagan pushed his way through the crowd that was growing more mob-like by the minute. The shouts were angry and although there were the usual boys who were trying to keep the fighters apart, most of the crowd seemed ready for a scuffle. It wouldn’t be Rodeo Days without one. Or ten.

He elbowed a very drunk man out of his way, ignoring the mumbled protest, and finally made it to the center of the circus. The cowboy that Devin had called Cash wasn’t sober by any means, but he was far less bombed than the man facing off against him. Teagan recognized Don Schaffer, a seasoned bronc rider.

“Hey, Donny,” Teagan said easily, stepping just slightly in front of Cash. It wouldn’t do for Teagan to piss Don off; the guy had a fast temper and a faster punch. “Got a problem?”
“Get outta the way, Rafferty.” Don was already slurring, not a good sign. “You’re in the way of my problem.”

Teagan glanced very briefly over his shoulder at Cash. Eyes that were--blue? Green? Teagan couldn’t see in the dim light, but somewhere his mind registered a mix of both--stared back at him, none too pleased. That was fine, Cash didn’t have to be pleased. He just had to not get hit.

Unfortunately, as soon as Teagan turned back around to try and make nice with Don, Don had apparently decided it didn’t matter who got hit. Teagan got a hard right cross that glanced off his cheek and made his ears ring.

“I said move!” Don shouted at Teagan, who was shaking his head and trying to clear his vision. “… you goddamn queer.” This last was muttered just loud enough for Teagan to catch, along with Cash, who had brought up his hands automatically to steady Teagan.

It got a little hazy after that. Don’s punch opened the floodgates and the bar erupted in noise and shouts and flying fists. Teagan lost track of Cash in the melee. The only thing Teagan was actually concerned about was trying to get to the door, since he knew the police had already been called. Getting arrested was the last thing he could handle right now.

***

Yes, that's how they meet. During a fight. And then Teagan goes off and has a threesome with two other guys. No lie.

jodi_payne wrote an outstanding review for it:

Jodi Payne, author of Founder, writes: Teagan Rafferty’s ranch is in trouble, but he’s determined to do everything in his power to hang on to the property that his daddy left him when he died. He’s pretty sure he can earn enough to get by on the rodeo circuit, but his rodeo partner has been injured in practice and now he’s stuck without a heeler.

The search is frustrating and fruitless and things are looking grim until, mostly out of desperation, Teagan finally hunts down a cowboy called Cash and gets him to agree to be his partner for the season. Thankfully, they seem to work pretty well together, and things start to look up.

Cash has a reputation and he doesn’t seem particularly talkative or friendly, but he gets the job done so Teagan can't really complain. When Teagan finds himself continually distracted by Cash’s striking eyes and his lean, fit body, he does his level best to put aside his attraction to the stoic cowboy to concentrate on work, but he just can’t seem to manage it. Eventually a little alcohol and adrenaline prove to be very liberating, and it isn’t long before Teagan finds himself having more sex than he can handle.

What happens after that is both exhilarating and heartbreaking. Teagan and Cash prove to be an incredible match both in the rodeo ring and in the bedroom, but is it love or only lust? Their season is terrific and Teagan finds himself sending home enough money to keep the ranch afloat and begin to build it back up to what was in his father’s day, but when their good fortune takes a sudden turn for the worse, everything is up in the air – not just the future of Teagan’s ranch, but whatever it is he and Cash have managed to build together, too.

I don’t need to tell you that Tory Temple’s men are hot. You’ve read her firemen, you know, and these cowboys certainly don't disappoint. But this story is so much more than wrangler jeans, leather saddles and the undeniable attraction between two men. It’s about trust and friendship and responsibility. It’s about learning tough lessons from your mistakes. It’s about the lengths to which a son will go to protect his family, his heritage and his future. And it’s about love, and the many, varied and often subtle ways in which it can be expressed.

Ms. Temple’s setting is rich, colorful and authentic, and her story, revolving around characters you truly care about, is every bit as beautiful. I cannot recommend Tabula Rasa highly enough.
