Creativity meets computation. Throughout April, we’ll be plugging into artists, coders, and future thinkers who are redefining intelligence, authorship, and the human-machine relationship.

Imagine ancient agricultural fields swarming with autonomous drones and algorithmic robots. That’s the cyber-rural reality created by Chinese multimedia artist @cao_fei .
Her latest project, Super Farm DASH: three years of fieldwork across rural China and Southeast Asia distilled into VR, video installations, and documentary footage capturing the collision between traditional farming and modern ag-tech.
For Cao Fei, the modern farm isn’t a pastoral escape, it’s a hyper-industrial landscape. As AI, drones, and automation reach the oldest human survival systems, a fascinating tension emerges: one that sits at the heart of contemporary Chinese culture: rapid technological revolution reshaping lived experience, subcultures, and rural ecosystems from the ground up.
As automation meets the plow, new questions open up about the human connection to the land.

First there was MBTI. Now China’s internet has moved on to something much weirder: SBTI. 🤡
The test went viral overnight, with links crashing under the flood of curious users. The premise? It borrows MBTI’s framework but replaces the serious personality types with absurd, self-deprecating labels like “yóuwù” (enchanting creature) and “málou” (a slang for exhausted, monkey-like existence). The test itself even jokes: “MBTI is outdated. SBTI is here.”
This is social media where young people laugh at their own burnout, stress, and existential confusion. A way to say: yeah, life’s a mess, and here’s my silly label to prove it.
People couldn’t even access the site at its peak. They traded screenshots instead, desperate to know: what’s my SBTI?

Chinese indie games are proving that art direction can be just as compelling as gameplay.
From the Taoist cyberpunk of Nine Sols (a hand-drawn action-platformer the developers call “taopunk”) to the ink-painted folklore of puzzle adventure The Rewinder, small studios across China are experimenting with visual styles that feel fresh and intentional.
Tales of the Neon Sea offers a pixel-art detective story set in a futuristic Chinese metropolis. Eastward turns lush 16-bit pixel art into a post-apocalyptic road trip. ICEY, an early indie hit, mixes sleek anime combat with a narrator who talks directly to the player. And A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei is still in development, but its Ming dynasty wuxia aesthetic already looks stunning.
What ties them together? A willingness to pull from ink painting, mythology, history, and cyberpunk as the core of the experience.

Maybe it was never about the music.
Wired headphones were supposed to be dead. But on Xiaohongshu, Gen Z is pulling them out of junk drawers, and braiding them into their hair.
The “wired headphone aesthetic” (有线耳机穿搭) has morphed from a simple Y2K throwback into a full-blown DIY styling movement. Creators are wrapping cords in beaded yarn, securing them with vintage hair clips. The wire isn’t plugged into anything, the visual disruption is the entire point.
When traditional luxury feels out of reach, hyper-personalization and DIY creativity become the new flex. A ¥9.9 pair of earbuds wrapped in friendship-bracelet thread hits harder than AirPods ever could.
Next time you find that impossible knot of cords at the bottom of your tote bag, don’t untangle it. Style it. Have you swapped your AirPods back for the wire yet?
