Photoshop has a very popular blend mode called "Linear Light". The users of Paint Shop Pro cannot use this blend because it is not available. After hours of experimenting in Paint Shop Pro, I have found the perfect combination (for every image I've used) to duplicate Linear Light in Paint Shop Pro!

Can this be translated?: I don't know about Gimp, but you honestly don't want to translate it to Photoshop. You already have linear light.

Find an image that you want to use. You could be making a banner, or an icon or something. I used this:
Name: Icon 01 (Base)

I am going to make that base look like this icon:
Name: Icon 02

In order to get Icon 02 in Photoshop, duplicate the base twice and set them both to Linear Light.

Of course, I don't have Photoshop, so I use Paint Shop Pro 9 for everything. Linear light is not an option for it. It's just as easy though; you just have to combine two different blend modes!

First: Duplicate the base (Icon 01) twice (exactly like the Photoshop version). You should have a total of three layers (one background, two raster or three raster layers). Here is how it should look if you are confused:

Second: Set the top layer (the second copy of the base) to Dodge - Opacity 82. Your icon will be a lot brighter looking now. Don't pay attention to it right now if you don't like it. You top layer must be set this way!

Third: Set the middle layer (the first copied layer) to Multiply - Opacity 100. Since the image was so defined, that's all you need, and now you have your own linear light!

This is what my layer palette looks like:

Everytime you want to make an icon look like Photoshop's linear light, you need both of those layers. Since this icon used two linear light layers, duplicate BOTH your layers and drag them both to the top, making the dodge layer the top one, of course (keep the dodge layer's opacity 82). Dodge greatly brightens and contrasts the picture while multiply will darken it. Here is an example of my layer palette:

Sometimes, you will have an ugly looking icon if you try this. Since you don't have the actual Linear Light feature, you're improvising so sometimes, it won't look up to par. If this happens, mess around with the opacity of the Dodge layer.

Let's try it with an icon unlike the first. Let's use this base:

This is what I'm going to try to make:

In order to make that on Photoshop out of the base, duplicate the base and set it to Linear Light. That's one duplicated base this time, not two, so we won't be able to acheive the same effect without modifying the Opacity.

First: Once again, duplicate the base twice (exactly like the Photoshop version). You should have a total of three layers (one background, two raster or three raster layers). Here is how it should look if you are confused:

Second: Set the top layer (the second copy of the base) to Dodge - Opacity 100. Your icon will be a lot brighter looking now. Don't pay attention to it right now if you don't like it. You top layer must be set this way!

That's way too bright for me, and it doesn't match up with Icon 04 so I am going to mess around the the opacity to make it look nicer. I put it on 50. I don't like it so I put it up at 75. It looks nice that way, but that's not what I'm trying to get! I finally decide on an opacity of 82, and I have something that, even though it's not exact, it's pretty darn similar!

I'm going to try this one more time using this base:

Set on one layer of linear light, this is what you get

Follow the same procedure and you get the same thing using the same steps.

Review:
I think a safe bet would be using a Dodge Layer set at 82 Opacity (You can change it to whatever you want if you don't like it that bright) and a Multiply Layer set at 100 Opacity. Remember, 1 linear light layer = 1 set of dodge and multiply (2 layers). 2 linear light layers = 2 sets of dodge and multiply (4 layers).

In the end, this is a tutorial simply mocking what linear light does. It does not recreate it exactly, especially when you don't know what linear light would appear like on an icon. Change the dodge opacity to your liking, depending on how much contrast you like.

First, grab an image of any sort and crop it. It doesn't matter how it's cropped, really.

This is mine:

Then go to the standard tool bar, and find Effects. Halftone is under Effects > Artistic Effects > Halftone! A menu (example) should appear. Play around with a bit if you want. This is how you make halftone. Everytime you want to turn anything into a halftone image, go to that menu.

Halftone Pattern:

Line - Your halftone is in lines.

Round - Your halftone is in circles.

Square - Your halftone is in squares. * only looks like squares at higher sizes.

Size - The bigger you want the dots, the bigger you make the size. Be sure not to make it so big that you can't see the dots!

Color Scheme:

RGB - This won't change your image's colors.

Greyscale - This makes your picture black and white (or any colors you choose, really).

Underneath Greyscale, you see "Ink" and "Background". These are the colors of the halftone if you set it on Greyscale (No idea why it's called "greyscale" when you can mess with the colors).

You can also set it to a transparent background (will show any layers below).

You can mess around with screen angles if you wish; I haven't done so as of right now.

If you check "Use as overlay", this is like the image is a separate layer where you can mess around with its blend and opacity. It's just like the regular layout palette.

After you figure out all your settings you want, hit "OK". This is my finished result:

My settings were:

Halftone Pattern: Round

Size: 2

Color Scheme: Greyscale

   Ink: #a71919

   Background: #FFFFFF

Use As Overlay: Yes

   Blend mode/Opacity: Overlay/100

But that's simply just to blend it within the image! If you want to make your own brushes for whatever program you use, make the Ink and Background color black and white! :) Here is how mine turned out after fiddling with the size and changing the colors!

Halftone Pattern: Round

Size: 8

Color Scheme: Greyscale

   Ink: #FFFFFF

   Background: #000000

Use As Overlay: No

First find an image you feel comfortable working with because you have to cut out the background! :O!!!

Oh noes!

I picked Eevee because the background is white and simple.

Underneath Eevee, you need to place a basic background image. I used this image:

KEEP YOUR EEVEE LAYER ON TOP OF ALL EFFECTS UNTIL I SAY WE ARE MODIFYING EEVEE.

Keep the background as Normal, 100. Keep Eevee as Normal 100.

Your icon won't turn out right if you put effects over Eevee.

Now my icon is:

Remember, this is a new layer underneath the Eevee one.

Right off the bat, we're going to make a new dark blue exclusion layer. You make this layer between the Eevee and background layers. Eevee should NOT change.

The color blue I used was (#0b0f5b). Set it to Exclusion 100. My result is:

Yay. Now make a new raster layer. Remember to keep the Eevee layer on top of these next few layers. I'll tell you when we modify Eevee!

I added this brush in a dark purple:

Set that layer to Burn 100.

Now it's time for the most important part of the icon..seriously. This little brush is the brush that looks neat in the background! I added this brush (STILL UNDER THE EEVEE LAYER) as white and set it on Screen 100.

That was be the last layer between Eevee and your background.

The next brush I used was:

I made it white and set it to Overlay 100. Remember, this goes on top of Eevee! Here is what my icon looks like:

I used this brush as black and set it to Soft Light 100.

Add a new raster layer, fill it with black, and set it to Color Legacy 42. Add another new raster layer, fill it with #0b0f5b (same as the exclusion layer) and set it to LIGHTEN 100.

Whew, we're almost done! Now, we have this:

We just have to brighten it now. Feel free to use any gradient you wish! I used:

Set that layer to Screen 100. Wow, it's really bright, you know? You can leave it as is, or continue reading this tutorial.

There are two ways that I use to darken an icon or bring out the background layer.

1. Make a new raster layer on top of everything, fill it with black, and set it to Soft Light #. Play around with the numbers until you get what you like. After doing that, this is my final result:

2. Hide the gradient layer. Make it invisible;whatever the PSP term is. Now, click on a layer that is visible and merge all visible layers (Layers>Merge>Merge Visible). Now you should have two layers; the gradient and the rest of the icon. Make the gradient visible again, duplicate the layer you just merged, drag it to the top, and set it to Overlay 100. This is my final result this way:

The first way leaves the background and Eevee within the gradient, blending everything nice together, when the second way brings out the background and Eevee. Whichever you like better is up to you! Go wild, and use my tutorial to better your skills. :)

PSP9 Tutorial \\ 4 - Potchama

Go from this to

First, start with your image you want to use. I used Potchama. You can use whatever you want. I haven't tried coloring like this with anything else, yet. I used this as my base background:

Pick something else if you want. I'm not too sure how this would work with a lighter background color so try to stay dark, or experiment and tell me the results! :)

Then I place the image I wanted over top and cut out the white background. Lol, now I have this crappy icon.

I played around with it awhile, and I couldn't get the white in the back to go away because it was such a close cut. So cheat, like I usually do, and use a stylish cover up. Go to Effects>3D Effects>Drop Shadow. Set it at 0,0. Make it white, and put it on a new layer. Blur it. Keep it on normal or play with the different layer settings offered. I kept mine on normal. Later, it won't be as visible if you just leave it on normal. This is just to cover up the fact that you're really bad at cutting out images. Oh, sorry, that's just me.

Keep your Potchama and shadow layer together at all times.

Now it's time to start adding shit to it. I used this brush as white and set it on Overlay 100.

I put this brush as black on top of the last layer and set it to Burn 100.

My icon looks like this now:

I need to add color to it and brighten it up! But first, the background sucks so I'm going to add a swirly brush to it. I used:
//iris_elegance

I placed that underneath the Pokemon and shadow layer and set that layer to Soft Light 100. It'll give you a pretty looking background!

Now, it's time to mess around with gradients. Since the penguin is blue, himself, I'm going to stick to blue and purple gradients, and I'm going to try and lighten up the icon at the same time.

I picked these:
Softlight 100
Hardlight 100

I had the skyblue layer on top of the purple, but it all depends on what you like more. This is what I have now:

Time for my specialty--washing out the colors I just used! Seriously, this is the oldest trick in the book so it's probably very repetitive for anyone who isn't new at this.

Create a new raster layer, fill it with a dark blue (#0b1243) and set it to Exclusion 100.

Create another new raster layer, fill it with a skin tone (#f5e8c1) and set it to Multiply 40!

This is mine now:

This is another old trick. Create yet another new raster layer, fill it with a light pink (#f9e5f6) and set it to Softlight 100! I'm done colorizing it now, because I like the background though I'm going to duplicate the image of the Pokemon, bring it to the top, and set it to Soft Light 32. This is my final icon:

Add whatever kind of text you want to it, whether it's brushes or your own. Create something of your own, and use my tutorial to help you further your skills. :)

PSP8 Tutorial \\ 3 - Han Solo

This is my third tutorial. Oh joy! Most of the brushes you see here were collected from other tutorials long ago or even as recently as today, and I probably don't know who made them so if you know, comment and tell me!

I started with this base which I made from a screen cap that comes from The Empire Strikes Back from this site.

Next, I added this texture at Lighten 100.

Then I added this light texture at Screen 100.

Then this texture was added at Overlay 46.

I then added this rainbow texture at Screen 100.

Then I duplicated the base twice, drug them to the top and set both at Soft Light 100.

I made a new layer, and I placed this brush in the lower left corner as white. Set that layer to Lighten 100.

I made yet another new layer and placed this brush in the upper left corner as white as well. This layer was set at Luminance 100.

Okay, I am content with what I have so now it's time to add text! I added this tiny text brush and wrote out Han above it in Arial Black at size 5. Both layers were set to Overlay 100, and a drop shadow was placed behind his name.

This is my icon now.

I think it's fine the way it is, but I really feel like the upper left-hand corner is just..too bland. Next, I added the following light texture to the top of the entire icon and set it at Screen 100.

And here is the final product!

PSP8 Tutorial \\ 2 - Shuyin

This is my second tutorial. Yay! Today, we are going to learn how to make this icon which was entered at ffx_x2_awards.

First choose two pictures that you would like to put together. The two Shuyin ones are my choices. Spread them out according to this border:

I had put the border on before I did the cropping and whatnot so I know exactly just where his beautiful little face is. Mess around with it a little bit, it'll work out.

Now just make it invisible or delete it for the time being. You only needed it to know if your images were spaced out correctly. After that, brighten up your image. I did mine separately because I had two images.

The image on your left was duplicated twice. The top one was set to soft light and the bottom duplicated layer was set to screen. The image to your right was duplicated twice as well and set the same way. This is what mine looks like now.

* Remember that I set my border invisible

Now we can see his pretty eyes.

Next, add this brush at black over top of the other layers you just made. Set it at overlay. I don't know who made this one, sorry.

This is what my icon looks like now:

That is definitely too dark for my liking so I duplicated both the screened layers of the original image, but I only set the one on the right to 57% transparency. Here is my icon now.

Next, I added this brush at white and set it at soft light. I have no idea who created this one either. xD

I did not like what it looked like over top of the Shuyin on the right so I deleted it on that side. It's up to you to decide if you want to delete a side of it or not. This is my icon now.

It is now a little brighter on the left. I liked the right as it was so I did not change it. I am content with my icon now except for the colors. I wanted the icon to have a washed out look so I used the oldest trick in the book. Create three new raster layers and set them as follows:

Now add that border again, or make it visible again, whichever you did. Then you can add whatever text you what. It doesn't matter to me. Go wild.

PSP8 Tutorial \\ 1 - Yuna

Some knowledge of how to use PSP8 is required.

If you create brushes out of the stamps I used, I do not remember the hex codes to most of them. Just chose a color that is alike.

So I started out with this base which I made from an image. Pick a different one if you want. Make sure it's nice quality. This is mine:

This is probably the hardest thing. You need to make sure that it is not the bottom layer and erase (or cut, whatever you do) the white area. Create a new layer underneath it and fill it with white.

Go to your Yuna layer and add a white drop shadow at 0,0 and gaussian blur it at 3.75! Set it ad Dodge 100. You may not be able to see it right away. This is to create a nice glow behind her later.

Keep your Yuna and shadow layer at the top at all times!

Next, I added this brush (I forget who made it. Feel free to comment):

I set that to Multiply 100.

Next, I added this (I don't remember whose this is either) at a shade of brown (Possibly 9B5707) You can also just copy and paste mine onto your image:

I set it at Luminance Legacy 100.

The next brush I added is by pilot. I used black and set it at Normal 54.

After that, I added this brush at black as well. I set it on normal 100.

You should now have something like this:

Next, add this brush (pilot) at #808080! Set it at Burn 100.

It should now look like this:

Add this (also by pilot) at a color near #DFCEA8 (Or just copy and paste mine onto the image). Set that at Overlay 100.

This should be something like your icon now:

I like it, but I feel like we could get more if we used more colors! I randomly chose a gradient. If you wanted to, you could probably chose one of your own and get a result similar.

I set that between my Yuna and drop shadow layer at Color Legacy 100.

I used that same gradient on top of Yuna and set it at Dodge 100.

Your icon should now look like this:

Next, add whatever you like. Make it your own. Experiment and create a style of your own.
