Loveless on hiatus until 7/28

Kouga Yun wrote in a tweet some time ago that Loveless will resume publication in the September issue of Zerosum that will go on sale July 28. As far as I'm aware of, she never announced Loveless was on hiatus in the first place, though it hardly comes as a surprise given Loveless erratic publication schedule during the last year and the recent launch of her new series in collaboration with Kurumada Masami titled "Kurumada Suikoden - Hero of Heroes." All the same, it's good to have a date to look forward to!

On Japanese honorifics and their replacements.

As most of us probably know, Viz is translating Loveless without honorifics. Which is a valid decision, and one I'm fine with... or would be, if they weren't making some really bad choices.

Specifically, they've decided that Ritsu-sensei and Nagisa-sensei are Mr. Ritsu and Miss Nagisa, respectively. "Mr." is fine, I suppose - it's just not what I was expecting. But "Miss," especially coming from Ritsu, gets on my nerves just a little.

If you could control what Nagisa and Ritsu are called, what would you choose? I personally like "Professor Ritsu" and "Doctor Nagisa" - again, Ritsu can go either way, but Nagisa's a little old to be a "miss" and it's really unprofessional coming from Ritsu!

But that's just me. Are you fine with Viz's choices? Do you like a third option?

An in-depth analysis of Viz's volume 9 translation

Hello everyone! A while back, after I received my copy of English Loveless Volume 9, translated by Viz, I did an analysis of some of the things I found strange or mistranslated. In my opinion, it's worth a read. I'm not trying to speak badly about Viz, but rather, to make people aware that translators may not always be the most reliable.

The original is here on my tumblr, but I'll post it beneath a cut, as well!

Name mistranslation

There’s really only one major name mistranlation in the book, thankfully. The translation of the name for Ritsu’s school. Most Loveless fans know it as “Seven Voices Academy” or something along those lines, since that’s how it’s translated by Kamibana and by Tokyopop, as well. However, Viz Media translates it as “Seven Stars Academy” (In the “Enjoy English!” chapter. Yuiko: “I’ll continue onto Seven Stars Academy.”, page 171), something that seems both shocking and honestly a bit upsetting, since on the back cover of the book it’s properly translated as “Seven Voices Academy” (“Seimei is very much alive and has torn through Seven Voices Academy like a whirlwind.”).

Honorifics

Another thing is the honorifics. They’ve been dropped completely from the manga, some of them westernized, for reasons I neither understand nor approve of. ‘Nagisa-sensei’ and ‘Ritsu-sensei’ are changed to Miss Nagisa and Mister Ritsu, which both sound strange and take away from the traditional feel of the manga. Besides, in America and western countries, we would say Miss Sagan and Mister Minami, so this makes no sense, really.

Ritsu’s ‘Soubi-kun’ is changed to just ‘Soubi’, which takes away a lot from the manga. ‘Kun’ is a honorific added when the speaker is older and is addressing a person of lower status, and someone they also demand respect from. It is also is used to refer to someone that you’re close to, but taking into consideration how close Soubi and Ritsu were and their relationship, the first is probably more likely. Ritsu’s character is all about power, and for him to still add the “-kun” to Soubi’s given name, it denotes that he is higher than Soubi and still thinks of him as the kid he was able to control.

The closest thing we have to giving the impression of a relationship of Soubi and Ritsu would be having Ritsu simply calling Soubi ‘Agatsuma.’. Now, this is also out of the question, since there’s no familiarity in just using someone’s surname. It may still have that sense of the speaker puts the listener below them, but it doesn’t give off the impression that Ritsu and Soubi have known each other for over ten years, and that Ritsu basically raised Soubi.

Then there’s the one that makes me the most angry. Sou. Kio calls Soubi ‘Sou’ rather than ‘Sou-chan’ or just ‘Soubi’. Now, I understand that taking out the petname completely and just changing it to Soubi’s full given name would’ve been difficult and might’ve taken away from their relationship even more than the translators already have (covered in a section below, when I analyze a specific chapter), but ‘Sou’ sounds extremely awkward. It also takes away from Kio’s personality and his relationship with Soubi.

‘-Chan’ is a honorific rarely added to male names. It denotes that the speaker finds this person endearing, or cute. It’s used for a lover, a pet, or close friends. It can be used for males, but in those cases, it’s either intimate or intimidating. In this case, it’s more intimate, but not in the sexual or romantic sense. ‘Sou’ without the honorific is just sort of… It may just be me, but it sounds odd, since in western cultures, we generally shorten a name that is long, such as ‘Samantha’ to ‘Sam’, or ‘Cheyenne’ to ‘Chey’, but we leave names that are short (Such as ‘ryan’, ‘collin’, ‘Noah’). ‘Soubi’ is a short name in English. Western cultures don’t particularly shorten names because of affection, like Kio does. It just sounds awkward and weird, and takes away the dynamic of ‘I’m calling you thin because you’re my friend and we’re close friends, whether you like it or not.’.

Another instance of this is that Yurio refers to himself in Japanese as ‘Yurio-sama’. Viz translates this as ‘The Great Yurio’ which… Just sounds pretty ridiculous all together.

Lost in translation

In general:

I noticed quite a bit of things. First off is the speech patterns. The most notable difference is Natsuo and Youji. Obviously, they are not proper children. They use slang, but it’s mostly limited to informal speech, curses, and some shortening of words like ‘gonna’, ‘woulda’, and things like that. They don’t use very much slang at all. Kamibana, the scanalators online who do a notably remarkable job translating things so that they resemble the meaning and speech patterns that the characters have in the japanese version, translate the chapters considerably different (covered below!) and in a way that makes more sense and gives more depth to the characters.

Anyways, going back to Natsuo and Youji, they use slang at every single chance they get. It gets to the point where it’s annoying. When Soubi gets a text from Seimei, telling him that he wants to trade Kio for Akame, Youji asks him (direct quote), “What’s he up to, Bro?!”. Now, I realize that they were trying to westernize things, but this is pretty silly looking and it really takes away from Youji’s character because that line was not supposed to be funny.

Soubi’s speech is off, too, but not nearly as bad. Soubi talks in sometime vague, off putting, complicated ways, and a lot of that was noticeably taken away. He speaks more like a college student, and while this doesn’t blatantly stick out for all to see, it’s kind of off putting, since a big part of Soubi’s character is that his speech is eloquent and not like how someone his age should talk. The entire point is that Soubi doesn’t act his age and is estranged from those his age.

The last example is Nisei. He talks like a valley girl. I wish I was kidding. A direct quote from the manga, “Because my finger is friggen’ broken!”. He also whines and complains a lot, but I’m nearly positive that’s canon.

Specific:

So, because when I read one of the chapters, I was immediately irritated at the amount of things wrong, I decided to pull up the Kamibana translation of some of the chapter and compare it against the Viz Media translation. It should be known first that I consider Kamibana’s translations canon, as they work extremely hard just to make sure that things have the same feel and beauty that they did in the original, while Viz… I think they could have benefited from taking a look at the original meaning of things, and the implications, and then deciding on a correct translation.

The chapter in question is when Kio is captured and remembers when he met Soubi and befriended him. The chapter is number 80.

I’ll start off with the first page/intro.

Kamibana: Kio [thoughts]: ”Honestly, I’ve been waiting for the chance… the chance to tell Sou-chan what I like, and the chance to tell him what I hate”

Viz: Kio [thoughts]: ”Actually, I was waiting for my chance. A chance to tell Sou that I ‘liked’ him, and a chance to tell him I ‘hated’ him”

As you can see, Viz changed the meaning of it, and their translation honestly makes no sense to me whatsoever, while the Kamibana translations is a thousand times clearer.

Kio moves on to talking to Soubi, he tells him about liking his paintings… I didn’t spot anything drastically different. But then Kio offers to take Soubi to lunch with their fellow classmates and they get to talking, and Kio asks why girls don’t like Soubi, insisting Soubi must’ve done something bad to them to make them angry. Soubi responds with…

Kamibana: Soubi: ”It’s difficult being around girls. They just dislike me.”

Viz: Soubi: ”I’ve never gotten along with girls. They’re quick to dislike me”

The first gives Soubi a little more character. ‘It’s difficult’ implies something that’s actually hard, something that’s naturally hard for him to do, and it implies that it’s difficult for Soubi to talk to girls or to just be around them. It implies that it’s nothing he does on purpose, but something that’s just naturally hard for him to do. On the other hand, ‘never gotten along’ implies that Soubi has actually done things that causes him not to get along with others. When you hear ‘never gotten along with’ it doesn’t imply something that someone can’t do naturally because they don’t know how—it makes it seem like they’ve done something to make others angry or hateful towards him.

They continue to talk to each other. Soubi mentions that things might be better if he were attractive, and Kio tells him that he is attractive. Soubi then mentions something in his past, something that Viz changed drastically and made very un-Soubi-like.

Kamibana: Soubi: “It wouldn’t be any better even if I were cute. I still just tagged along like a weirdo, when I was a kid.”

(Kio: “You are so cute”)

Viz:Soubi: ”There’s nothing good about being cute. You just get stalked by some pervert. Happened while I was little.”

(Kio: So you are cute)

First of all, have we ever known Soubi to talk openly about Ritsu? No, we really haven’t. When Sleepless called Soubi a teacher’s pet in order to get a reaction out of him, Soubi refused to talk about what was bothering him with Ritsuka later on. Even when he talked with Ritsuka about Ritsu in the graveyard, he didn’t give away very much and got upset over the entire thing very quickly. Kio is someone he just recently met, and Soubi has never mentioned Ritsu to anyone besides Ritsuka (in the graveyard), not even indirectly. It seems very out of character for him to do so.

As for the Kamibana translation, it fits very well with what Soubi said in the previous page, about how it was difficult getting alone with girls. This gives us a reason why—because Soubi stuck out and tagged along with others without really being apart of anyone’s group as a child. The Viz translation, however, is very out-there and doesn’t fit at all with what was said in the previous page. Even the meaning of what Kio said was switched around, and from his expression in the panel, it seems more likely that he’s saying that Soubi is cute, rather than accusing him of going back on what he previously said about not being attractive.

Kio and Soubi talk a little bit more, and then Kio asks for Soubi’s cell phone so he can get his number, and finds that Soubi only has one contact: Aoyagi Seimei. He asks Soubi about him, and Soubi says that Seimei isn’t a friend. Kio’s reaction is pretty instantaneous:

Kamibana: Kio [thoughts]: “Intuitively, from the beginning, I had the feeling Soubi didn’t like him.”

Viz: Kio [thoughts]: “Right from the start, I could sense I wouldn’t like the guy.”

Again, the meaning is completely changed here. In Kamibana’s version, this is, again, a pretty monumental line. Soubi not liking Seimei? But Seimei is Soubi’s master. This adds to the dynamic between Soubi and Seimei, and how Soubi speaks about Seimei. It’s obvious from Soubi’s face in the panel that Seimei isn’t speaking well about Seimei, as well as from the words he says. Viz, on the other hand, changed this, making this line centered around Kio, which makes little sense, since all Soubi said was that he wasn’t a friend. You could draw a conclusion that Soubi didn’t like Seimei easily from his expression, and from how he interrupts Kio and tells him that Seimei isn’t a friend.

And finally, the Kimo line. This line is pretty memorable, since it’s one of the few instances where we see Soubi joking around with someone, even if it’s just to annoy them and make them angry. Viz, again, changed this line.

Kamibana: Kio: “Will you call me Kio?”

Soubi: “Kimo.”

Viz: Kio: “Ease up and call me Kio!”

Soubi: “Kia? Like the car?”

In the Kamibana version of this line, it’s pretty obvious Soubi is joking around, from his shown expression and from how the line is bolded and put in italics. It’s funny, too. Viz’s line, however, just comes off as stupid, to be honest, and it’s not funny and it could be very easily taken as Soubi being completely serious.

Conclusion

I’m honestly not trying to advise against buying Loveless volume 9, but just be wary of the translations and be aware that better ones could be found!

National Novel Writing Month starts tomorrow, and I'm doing Loveless fic for it! I also moved recently, and left my Loveless collection at home, intending to rebuy the series from Viz because I like their translation more. Which is great - except I no longer have my reference material. Whoops.

So I have silly questions about the attack on Seven Voices Academy. Please indulge me for just a second? ;_;

What month and year was the chapter that started the attack originally published in Zero-Sum?

After the battle, are all students accounted for? (I can remember a line about head counts, but not whether anyone was missing.)

I am shutting my eyes,I am trying not to think.Swiftly,in a moment of carelessess in front of my eyes my life is swept with unbearable detail and intensity that I feel my heart pulls and aches forward the rib bones like it wants to break free. And it scares me,momentarily, that thought of sudden, unexpected death amid mindless everyday, spent in trying to pass it more sufferably.I am too tired and overwhelmed to care,to ponder about pins in my heart and invinsible walls I am hitting constantly. It's hard to wander around this room,it's hard to go outside. With pillow tightly pressed to my chest it's best to sleep.I am so tired, anyway, everytime I sleep would do me fine. But there's that whirpool swirling in my head contained in steele bowl,it can't break free and escape.
And I am feeling if there were ten people to hit me defenseless I would endure with straight face,I wouldn't succumb. That's what I was supposed to become.
Want to crumble but to afraid of falling,no one can assist me.'Ritsuka,if you could hold me..'In that gentle fantasy ,there's origin of my river and it's meeting.

Viz Media's version of Loveless 9 was released today! I have it in my hands right this second. \♥w♥/

They're releasing volume 10 early next year, and they're also releasing volumes 1 and 2 as a single volume next month, which I didn't know about until I read the ads in the back of 9.

Interestingly, Viz has Loveless rated as T instead of OT, which is not a decision I would've made; if anything, I think Loveless needs to be rated higher. Thoughts?

I scanned the Loveless special booklet that came with the 11th volume of Loveless! It's a story about Mikado and Tokino shoe shopping, when Mikado has a flashback about Seimei. There's also a lot of guest art from other artists~!

Download
Summary credit!
Feel free to use for anything!!
