Nick León was a bit quieter than usual. He'd had a chaotic few days. Earlier in the week, the 29-year-old DJ and producer returned to his home base in Miami following a two-week stint in Mexico. He changed his clothes in the airport bathroom and then headed to an all-day studio session with singer-songwriter and electro pop maven Empress Of. The recording continued into Friday, and when León did eventually leave the studio, it was to go straight to Club Space to play back-to-back with close friend and associate Jonny From Space as part of a showcase of Miami's best electronic music. The next day he was with me, facing the brittle chill of New York in January and gearing up to play a headlining set at the two-floor Brooklyn club Paragon.

Come 1 AM, Nick León stepped in to assume control of the mix from friend and collaborator Bitter Babe, and as the already-breakneck pace of the music picked up, the dance floor began to bounce. Much like his productions, León's set wove strands of dembow, guaracha and reggaeton together with techno and IDM, forging a singular sonic thread. From below, he was hardly visible beyond his shock of neon green hair, the lights making him seem like a glow-in-the-dark Halloween decoration that had gained sentience and decided to moonlight as a DJ. Later on, when the lights came on and it was clear no one had any intention of leaving, León milked the moment for all it was worth, lifting his hands from the CDJs for the first time all night to light a cigarette and dance with friends to the merengue-and-reggaeton blend of Ryan Castro's "Mujeriego." After the set, in the green room, he was smiling from ear to ear, almost euphoric.

"Paragon was really cool because it was the first time I did a [New York] show that wasn't just a homies' party—it was me being contracted to play in New York and headlining," he said. "The fact that it sold out and went so well was very validating as far as us having our own sound and pull that people recognise, especially after playing Sustain-Release [last year]."

Marathon excursions between studios and DJ booths have become routine for León. Over the course of 2022, the Miami-based artist experienced the kind of breakthrough year most aspiring musicians can only dream of. "Xtasis," his collaboration with DJ Babatr, was widely heralded as the best dance track of the year, rinsed by some of the most prominent names in electronic music. He also contributed to the most forward-thinking pop record of 2022, Rosalía's Motomami, and was instrumental in shaping the racy reggaeton of rising star Isabella Lovestory's debut LP, Amor Hardcore.

León's music and DJ sets have provided a welcoming gateway into the larger realm of South Florida dance music culture. His rise over the past few years has intertwined with a new generation of DJs and producers redefining Miami's—and the surrounding region's—sonic identity. Several artists, including Coffintexts, INVT and Nicholas G. Padilla, have garnered international attention for seamlessly melding the sounds of the Latin American diaspora into an electronic framework, making Miami a geographical focal point for Latin-inspired rhythms for both local and visiting artists. After being boxed in by the bygone days of Miami bass, the rise and fall of Winter Music Conference and the excesses of the EDM era, Miami has been recognised once again as a hotbed of exciting electronic music—a development León has played no small part in.

He can't recall a time when he wasn't enamored with music. Born in Oakland, California, León took a quick liking to his father's instruments as a toddler. He told me there are pictures of him as an infant banging on whatever surface he could find, actual drums or otherwise. "My dad had this thing called a charango, a guitar-like instrument from the Andes that's made of an armadillo shell," he said. "The story he always tells is that I broke it because I was trying to mess with it so much."

His family moved to Fort Lauderdale in Broward County, Florida, when he was three years old. Thanks to his relatives, León had an abundance of musical inputs to pull inspiration from. The most direct influence came from his older brother, who was a fan of Cypress Hill, Jeezy and the Mexican rap group Control Machete. His mother, who grew up in the city of Cali, Colombia, often played salsa and vallenato records along with Colombian singer-songwriter Carlos Vives and The Beatles, while cousins introduced him to reggaeton.

León's grandmother was particularly supportive of his interest in music, making it a point to bring him to the opera and let him use her grand piano. "She tried to teach me 'Moonlight Sonata' and those kinds of things," he said. "Before I even knew what I was doing, I was just messing around on that big piano. Bless her for letting me bang on that shit, because it probably sounded fucking terrible."

He learned to play his first instrument in October 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma, an especially fierce and infamous storm in the annals of tumultuous Florida weather. Left without power or any form of electronic entertainment for three weeks, León kept himself amused with an acoustic guitar gifted to him by his father. Years later, with electricity long since restored, he found FL Studio on his brother's computer. After exporting the digital audio workstation onto the family computer, he put his passion into practice.

By high school, it was clear that music was León's higher calling. "The most spiritual experience you can have as a teenager is being depressed and listening to something like Linkin Park or System of a Down—that was the closest I ever felt to God," he told me. With little interest in more accessible South Florida teenage pastimes like online gaming or cruising for house parties, he became obsessed with learning how to make music.

"I don't remember choosing this," he said. "As a shy, introspective person, music has always been my tool for interacting with the rest of the world. It's the thing that forces you to learn how to talk to people, how to communicate, how to resolve conflict, how much bigger the world is, about different kinds of people; history, anthropology, everything. When I think of it that way, it's more comforting than being like, 'Damn, I really decided to become a musician in a failing economy.'"

Coming of age in the late '00s, León spent more and more time on now-defunct blogs and forums, downloading the entire discographies of artists like Stereolab while also finding inspiration in the futuristic productions of Timbaland and Miami jook—a fast-paced, dance-inflected variant of hip-hop that was mostly confined to South Florida.

"I credit that music as being more influential to my shit than"—he paused—"like Burial or something. Obviously I love Burial and Warp and those kinds of things, but Grind Mode's 'I'm So High', Rick Ross and the reggaeton boom of 2004 when Daddy Yankee was making it to the States… that's why I started making music," he said.

Once he got the hang of FL Studio, he moved over to Pro Tools and began sharing beats and inviting local artists into his home to record. His mom was kind enough to overlook the weed smoke that would emanate out from his laundry room setup.

Although León never attended Ultra, living 45 minutes away from Miami between 2010 to 2012 placed him within the blast radius of the EDM explosion and the drop-heavy pop spectacle was his first real introduction to dance music culture. "Skrillex was a game changer for me—I loved it," he said. "I thought that was the future of music."

Through Skrillex he found deadmau5 and more importantly, the progressive house superstar's online videos detailing his studio and production process. Having dedicated the bulk of his time to crafting beats for others to rap over, León had an avenue for making music that didn't require vocalists and could be entirely his own.

When León wasn't immersing himself in music, he was working alongside his grandma checking passengers in on cruises at Port Everglades and Port of Miami. As a suburban American teenager with limited access to proper club experiences, León's initial brushes with nightlife were inherently dodgy. On a few occasions, he and his friends made the trip to Club Cinema in nearby Pompano Beach. While it won't go down in history as the epitome of dance floor liberation, Club Cinema is infamous among South Florida ravers now entering their 30s—and their horrified families. Owned and operated by a felon convicted for $500 million in cocaine distribution, Cinema's clientele was near-exclusively underage. As such, MDMA was the substance of choice and the behaviour was correspondingly depraved. The club hosted DJs like Laidback Luke and Steve Aoki amid peak EDM and it was during visits by both that León laid eyes on dance music-fueled revelry for himself, though that specific strain of "raving" wasn't really for him in the end.

After graduating high school and taking audio engineering courses at SAE Institute Miami, León saved enough money to move up north and crash on the couch of a friend studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He arrived on April 16th, 2013—the day after the Boston Marathon bombing. Once things settled down, he set out to soak up as much music as he could from his new surroundings. Friends who'd visited NYC put him on to the sounds of Venus X's GHE20G0TH1K party, while sets by Total Freedom and Dubbel Dutch (León described the latter as "if Hudson Mohawke made dancehall") widened his perception of what was possible with electronic music in live settings. "Going to Boston and seeing dance music parties there made me go, 'Oh, this is how it should be… not as demented and fucked up,'" he told me.

Unfortunately, within a few months of arriving, a family emergency forced him back home. Even with this unexpected setback, he landed in South Florida with new influences in tow and fresh ideas about how to incorporate them into his music.

"Because South Florida is such a small place in a lot of ways, anything creative that gets done has to be in Miami," León said. "If you want to pursue DJing or music, you're not going to do it in Fort Lauderdale—that's terrible."

Five days after that Paragon set, I met León at The Corner in Miami, a dive bar with a 24-hour liquor license within spitting distance of Club Space. On this particular night, the ranks include León, DJ Ray, Jonny From Space and Anthony Naples.

Gathered around an outdoor table, the group shot the shit and reminisced about the "unhinged" energy at Naples' cabin during Sustain-Release. As he caught up with the Incienso cofounder, León ran through his festival itinerary for the year, including Club To Club, Dekmantel, Primavera Sound Porto and Sónar.

Before he became a fixture of any Miami spots, much less international music festivals, a considerable amount of León's time was spent driving back and forth from the city. Post-Boston he was back in his childhood home in Fort Lauderdale. Hindered but undeterred, he was set on making inroads into the far more active Miami scene developing just south of him. "Because South Florida is such a small place in a lot of ways, anything creative that gets done has to be in Miami," he said. "If you want to pursue DJing or music, you're not going to do it in Fort Lauderdale—that's terrible."

A chance encounter on Twitter led to León's first-ever Miami gig. Ashley Venom, a DJ and local community organizer, invited him to perform at the LMNT warehouse space where she organized parties. León played Axinite, an event that boasted an array of prominent South Florida artists including SpaceGhostPurrp, Denzel Curry and other members of the Raider Klan collective, along with Robb Bank$ and Pouya. Armed with his laptop, MIDI controller and Ableton Live, León made enough of an impression to be invited back to play the venue's monthly hip-hop party, The Void.

Over time, León made connections and developed a reputation as a uniquely dexterous hip-hop producer. He collaborated with Bank$ and Curry, building off work he'd done for Brooklyn rap duo The Underachievers. A handful of tracks he worked on, like "Pressure" by Bank$, became canonical entries in South Florida rap. His productions steadily made the rounds, catching the ears of figures like prolific audio engineer and Low End Theory founder Daddy Kev. Kev commissioned León to assemble an album for his label Alpha Pup Records that became his melancholic debut LP, Profecía.

David Sinopoli—former booker at Bardot, cofounder of III Points Music Festival and current co-owner of Club Space—took a substantial interest in León and put him on at every possible opportunity. Around spring 2016, the young artist started thinking about creating a record label to provide a platform for Miami artists, spurred on by the music of his friend Bear. Sinopoli suggested reviving Space Tapes, a label he started several years earlier, but had fallen to the wayside due to the demands of III Points.

Space Tapes' first compilation came out in 2017, right around the time that León moved to Miami proper, renting a house on the outskirts of the MiMo neighbourhood with two other music heads. Affectionately dubbed the Blue House, or Blue Casita, the dwelling became a central location for Miami's electronic scene. In addition to hosting Space Tapes' weekly meetings—which spawned many of that period's parties and releases—the Blue House was a popular site for people to practice DJing or record with one another. Together with Warehouse 229, a nearby DIY venue, these spots gave Miami DJs and producers space to learn and refine their craft.

During a short but fruitful window from 2017 to 2021, the now-shuttered label functioned as an effective musical cooperative, operated by a consortium of South Florida artists who had all seemingly decided to get serious about orienting their lives around electronic music at the same time. This included León as well as DJs, event planners and multi-disciplinary creatives such as Bear, Sel.6 and Jonny From Space. Several players in South Florida's electronic scene identify this period as the inflection point on the path to Miami's current moment in the sun. Jonny From Space is one of them. Born Jonathan Trujillo, he and León met through mutual friends and bonded over a joint appreciation for more experimental electronic offerings.

"We were trying to be heard and have this international respect because we knew what was going on in Miami was dope and deserved to have recognition outside of just us," Trujillo told me. "We're significantly better at what we do now than we were then. That's why Miami is having this moment: we didn't fold, we didn't divert, we were just confident in our ability to make it work and be heard eventually. And it happened, rightfully so."

The sentiment is echoed by Danny Daze, a long-time fixture of the Miami scene and the city's fiercest champion of local talent. "As soon as somebody like Nick comes up, a lot of other people come up as well," he said. "The Jonny From Spaces come up, the Coffintexts, the INVTs, all these people—when one person gets this amount of attention, it's always good that they also have people alongside them. It's really important when a younger cat is able to pump fresh blood through Miami's veins. People like him are who tend to influence even younger artists to go and make music."

As León made waves in Miami, his music started to spread elsewhere. The inclusion of his track "Pelican Dub" on Laurel Halo's DJ-Kicks turned heads toward Miami and León's Latin-inflected club sound. His network expanded to include international outfits like NAAFI out of Mexico City and Colombian collective TraTraTrax. Closer to home, he also connected with Max D, founder of Washington, DC label Future Times. León's respective releases on each label broadcast his sound far beyond the confines of Miami, laying the foundation for "Xtasis" to take the world by storm in the summer of 2022. More recently, Split—León's collaborative EP with like-minded Latin club experimentalist DJ Python—was released to acclaim on the latter's Worldwide Unlimited label.

"I like proving people wrong about the city and I like putting people on to stuff that's going on; it's what I've always liked to do," León said on being an ambassador for the Miami scene.

The next time León and I met, we had breakfast at Jimmy's Eastside Diner, which was immortalised in the 2016 film Moonlight. The MiMo restaurant has been open since the 1960s, one of few establishments to enjoy any longevity in a relentlessly changing city. León was getting ready to embark on another European tour, relishing this chance to chill out at home. He and his partner spent the previous night at their apartment, cooking dinner and watching White Noise. (They didn't like it.) After our meal, they were going to spend the day with León's mum.

It wasn't lost on León that, after years of arranging his life to spend more time in Miami, he's now the one taking it abroad. He takes pride in helping to put the city, and South Florida as a whole, on the map in a larger context. He's starting a new label called Impacto with Jonny From Space, and the first release is an EP from Pablo Arrangoiz—who has cultivated a reputation in certain circles for his demented, absurdly hard-hitting approach to both DJing and his own music—under the alias El Gusano. Looking further ahead, León is playing around with raw ideas he hopes to shape into another album. He described the music as a melodic follow-up to "Love Potion" on Split, half-jokingly calling it "liminal space music."

Although León misses the city and his friends while he's away, he respects the significance of being able to share Miami dance culture with the rest of the world and show that it’s much more than just bottle service clubs and Scarface iconography.

"It feels good to be a kind of ambassador," he said. "I like proving people wrong about the city and I like putting people on to stuff that's going on; it's what I've always liked to do. I wear it, you know—I'm sure most people wear where they're from, but I feel a responsibility to do it." He took a long pause. "It's the mission."
