In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful,
This prayer and verse caused me to pause and reflect last night. I knew this prayer marks almost the end of this beautiful story that is in full, for the reader to gain insight and lessons for their own lives.
There is so many poignant things in this concise prayer. There is acknowledgement of the favours which Allah had bestowed upon prophet Yusuf AS and his journey started with the ability to interpret dreams. The surah begins with his narration of his dream in which he sees the stars prostrating to the moon to his father. This ability also helped spare his life and grant him the worldly position and authority. This posit
...“My Lord! You have surely granted me authority and taught me the interpretation of dreams. ˹O˺ Originator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Guardian in this world and the Hereafter. Allow me to die as one who submits and join me with the righteous.” (101)
Allah devotes five ayaat in surah al-Baqarah [183-187] to the rulings of Ramadan. He mentions the last of these rulings and then concludes, saying
"... and do not approach your wives while you are making i'tikaaf in the mosques. These are Allah's limits, so do not come close to them. In this way Allah makes His ayaat clear to the people so that they might have taqwa." [187]
Sheikh 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di highlighted a benefit here, writing:
[وفيه إشارة إلى أن الاعتكاف في آخر رمضان أفضل من غيره لتواتر الاحاديث فيه
...It has been made permissible for you to be intimate with your wives during the nights preceding the fast. Your spouses are a garment for you as you are for them. Allah knows that you were deceiving yourselves. So He has accepted your repentance and pardoned you. So now you may be intimate with them and seek what Allah has prescribed for you. ˹You may˺ eat and drink until you see the light of dawn breaking the darkness of night, then complete the fast until nightfall. Do not be intimate with your spouses while you are meditating in the mosques. These are the limits set by Allah, so do not exceed them. This is how Allah makes His revelations clear to people, so they may become mindful ˹of Him˺. (187)
Allah has created everything in pairs, and through these opposites, He helps us to know HIM. By experiencing contrasts, we are able to recognize truth, and through tests, we discover our true selves.
Allah, the ONE who allows diamonds and coal to emerge from the same element, carbon has also created all of us from the same raw material, clay. He has honored us by gifting us intellect and a ruh (soul). Yet, from this same origin, our outcomes can differ greatly. It depends on how we strive and respond to life’s tests.
Just as pressure transforms carbon into a diamond, trials can refine a believer and reveal their best potential. Conversely, the same element may remain coal if it is not proper
...˹He is the One˺ Who created death and life in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving. (2)
When reflecting deeply on this verse, one begins to understand why guidance itself is a gift.
The word هُدًى comes from the root (ه-د-ي), the same root that gives us هَدِيَّة (a gift). Linguistically they are different words but the connection is profound. Guidance is not something human beings can manufacture on their own. It is something given. It is not earned.
And when we look honestly at the world around us, we begin to understand why.
Today we live in a time where even the most basic moral truths are debated. People openly ask questions that earlier generations would have considered unimaginable:
"What is wrong with incest?" "If we have more than enough babies, why cant we eat them

There is so much going on in these two verses.
First, the Most High describes Himself as ‘the One Who is in heaven’. The impact of this description is immediate: the reader is reminded of one who is mighty, majestic, glorious, above His throne. A Lord whose power is not restricted. To cause the earth to quake and swallow or rain down storms of stone is easy for one as high as the one in heaven.
Second, any illusion of safety that those who enjoy the ‘ability to walk the slopes of the earth and eat its provision’ [verse 15] may have as a result of it is immediately shattered. Safety from Him is safety in Him. Refuge from Him is refuge in Him.
Third, while He is the one in Heaven, He is

What force can help you if the Lord of Mercy does not? The disbelievers are truly deluded. (Al-Mulk: 20)
The false façade of safety and security surrounding mighty civilisations such as ʿĀd, Thamūd, and Pharaoh was lifted the moment Allah’s punishment was unleashed upon them. Those who were once powerful, in a single moment, became powerless. Their thrones and chambers of authority were reduced to ruin, and they possessed neither power nor might to protect themselves.
We see echoes of this reality even today. Some nations spend trillions in pursuit of safety and security, placing their hopes and reliance on foreign superpowers, only to face destruction and devastation. This misplaced trust

Yes, we are seeing scenes of how the mighty can crumble, the ruins of Petra the ruins of The Egyptian royal empire, are all remains, and reminders, the destruction, the wrecked debris , the endless field of destroyed tall.towring buildings. The sheer pride in which was taken from them , and the arrogance to claim ownership and steal that which belongs to none but الله ﷻ and the rightful striving hradworkers. who are the guided inheritors. The days of sabr may be here so to are the days of empowering ourselves.!

This ayah feels very personal to me right now; its message is incredibly soothing in a difficult period of my life.
The verse begins with a statement that can feel difficult at first: “No calamity occurs except by the permission of Allah.” This does not mean that suffering is random or meaningless. It means that nothing escapes the knowledge, wisdom, and decree of Allah. Even the events that feel chaotic or painful are not outside His awareness.
But the most profound part of the verse comes in the second half. Allah does not say: He removes the calamity. He says: “He guides his heart.” This is a remarkable shift. The transformation happens inside the believer.
Faith does not necessarily

Allah describes a leader given tools and options, but the deeper lesson is that ability is not the same as righteousness. When you have multiple paths and imperfect information, this verse reminds you to treat means as a trust: choose what aligns with justice and humility, because your values are the compass when certainty is not available.

https://youtu.be/Cm5M7XRu4pI?si=DxWbfkDWIm-6ixMXWe are often told that Allah is needless of our worship and unaffected by our disobedience. Our prayers do not increase His kingdom, nor do our sins diminish His authority. So why were we created?
Reflecting deeply, it appears that the purpose is not to prove anything to Allah, He is Al-‘Alīm, Al-Khabīr, the One who already knows every secret hidden within the soul. Rather, life is designed to expose to us what truly lies within us. Quran 91:7-10
The Qur’an says: “And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you and those who are patient.” (47:31)
The test is not for Allah to know, but for us to see ourselves.

...Reading this ayah brings me to tears because most of us have someone like this in our life--someone who, despite not being muslim, is incredibly supportive and kind but refuses to believe for some reason or another. Imagine being in the Prophet's (SAW) position: having a direct connection with Allah SWT and knowing the ultimate fate that awaits someone who, despite their undying support of you, refuses to accept Islam. What an immense test. Subhanallah.
