Star Trek Into Darkness blathering. SPOILERS!
I will talk a lot about Spock/Uhura and my fanfic future with them but I'll also put thoughts on other stuff too!
All in all, really good. Def worth 3D for sure. All round nice character development altho I obviously want more for Uhura because I love her and want to see her kicking butt and being awesome. She's the only main girl, Carol notwithstanding. Still she does more or less as much as Bones and Scotty, tho obvs because they are doctor and engineer their roles seem more immediately profound. Kirk learns lessons in power games and morality and his relationship with Spock develops well - like, I thought we were friends and you act like this and I know I have to grow up but, look, there I grew up. Spock realizes that logic alone is not enough and that emotion can achieve great things. He's impossible not to love, especially when he talks about his meld with Pike. DAWW BB! Pike - love him. Great character. Cumberbatch is frankly brilliant, you love him and fear him. A truly terrifying character. Carol Marcus, actually LOVED her and the underwear scene is actually funny and in context and a nice nod to her and Kirk potentially getting it on and creating David from the original movies. Plus her presence is explained reasonably and she gets to show that she has a mind. Bones is cantankerous and brilliant and lends a lot of humanity, Chekov is great, he is so young and what he contributes just totes suited that character, Sulu is awesome. I sorta fell in love with him because just argh, Sulu is a class act. Oh and let's not forget Scotty, Scotty just is the glue for the whole thing. We talk about the triumvirate of Kirk, Spock and McCoy but Scotty was always in there and super buds with the lot of them.
I am happy with Spock/Uhura, no massive pashing but good enough for me. There wasn't a huge amount of them in the first movie anyway so I get that this franchise isn't going to give us major chick emo porn feels on the big screen. That's why I write fanfic. Yeah I think I can reconcile them as they are in this movie with how I have established them in my fics and my headcanon. I can still see that Spock and Nyota more or less met and could not keep their mitts of each other's fine fine bodies. Spock is brilliant, moral and masculine throughout despite his apparent coolness. You can tell he views Nyota with a lot of respect and values her intellect and her emotional intelligence. You can see why she struggles with his behaviour and why she loves him in spite of it. They have this kind of accidentally in love vibe, like it wasn't what either of them expected but they can't help it and we envy them because they are so sexy and you would love to be a fly on the wall. And Spock IS sexy in this movie, esp in his grey uniform and cap. Fuck me, so hot. And Ny looks gorgeous too, esp in her greys and in her incognito let's find Harrison get up. Nice to see Hendorff pop up too. We don't know her name but I also loved the black chick who is at Chekov's station on the bridge. She is soo cool. In my head she can be Lt Charlene Masters from TOS so it will be nice to invent backstory and interactions for her character in fanfiction too. She was, you might say, super fly (seems kinda lame to say that given that she is piloting the Enterprise arf arf). Back to Spock and Uhura....
....I think, with some thoughtful ficcing we can get them to how they are interacting in this movie. Sure. I have written them post 2009 mostly via a pseud, partly because I wanted to see how they would be portrayed in the movie before I invented the backstory, like all fanfic writers did with the first movie, and partly because I was writing them having this messed up dom/sub style relationship involving whips and chains and buttsecks and butt plugs and Spock being massively scary. This was a result of a challenge prompt that got out of hand but I'm unrepentant because of all the nasty porn I have got out of that fic bwahahaha. I'm just answering a fandom need! In the movie, their interactions are kinda innocent so I'm not sure entirely I am able to reconcile that chain of events with how they are - I'm not sure I can see that Uhura wearing her buttplug but even less so can I see that Spock buying one for her. Stelam Spock is more damaged than Into Darkness Spock. Clearly his emotional repression works to a point because he seems a lot less twisted than perhaps I have written him. That's partly why I wrote Stelam under a pseud, to separate it from PoorQueequegs headcanon.
However the non pseud PQ post 2009 crack I wrote involving the Peanut Butter Twix......yeah, definitely I can see this Into Darkness Spock acting like that and Kirk not really understanding how they work as a couple until Bones comes along and says well, come on Jim, you KNOW how Spock gets sometimes.
In PQ's head, Sufficiently Familiar still fits with this movie. Flawed Logic could too, but that is more cracky and silly as a fic and I prefer them as they are in Sufficiently Familiar. They are more flawed and real methinks. In Sufficiently Familiar Spock is much more closed off and only able to express his emotions for Nyota through sex and gestures of tenderness. She finds herself swept up in something she can't really control and it bothers the shit out of her and more, her reactions to Spock's violent outbursts are in keeping with what we see in both 2009 and Into Darkness. After this movie I can still perfectly picture them together in that vibe, bonded and happy with that but struggling because they are so different. I love that Spock fears her temper in Into Darkness because in Sufficiently Familiar I wrote her snippy as fuck and constantly fighting against him and when he fucks up emotionally she really makes him suffer. I can also reconcile Uhura arguing with him in the shuttle to the Klingon homeworld because in SF when they argue Spock has a tendency to grab her and fuck her into submission. If that is how things are between them I can see her being all uptight and annoyed with him like she is in this movie because it would be like when she had attempted to express her dissatisfaction with his attitude/behaviour she couldn't get any reasonable response out of him because he just put his Spock moves on her and she capitulated. She can only really give him a verbal bashing in public because she knows he wouldn't dare try that shit in front of the others! Also she is seething from not having been able to get her point across in spite of the weight of her grievance.
ZQ's Spock is great actually, he's squishable but so so Spockish. And fierce man, that sexy scowl and how he rocks his uniforms with bulging muscles and that fine butt. Honestly, poor Ny never stood a chance. I can see them meeting and spending a good long moment checking eachother out and then locking eyes and being like woah, you know I was checking you out and I was checking you out too and oh my, we so FIIIINE cue Spock being all like, logical reason to interact: Your Klingon is not so great, you better come to my special extra curricular sessions and work on that and she's all like, sheesh Vulcans are so blunt but OMG SPOOOCK IS SO HOT okay sir. And nice that she has to speak Klingon in this movie and that that is how I wrote them first spending time together in Sufficiently Familiar. It adds a nice touch of mentor/protegee kink.
So yeah for me, after Spock beats Khan down and they take him back to the Enterprise to hand him over to Bones, when they are alone together again, they have a shy, tender snuggle and rub their noses together a lot while she's tucked up in his lap and they are all cooing and snuggling and smoochin' for a while and eventually get back to the hot Vulcan loving. I can't wait to see Spock go Pon Farr cray cray in the next movie, suus mahna-ing bizzatches left right and centre while rocking a sexy beard and grabbing on Ny like BB LET'S BANG AND NEVER STOP........
