Catalyst for Change

Picture it: June 2025, Pride Month, Lexington, KY. After hosting a gathering with local affirming faith leaders, I decided to move our inclusive Pride flag from the office to the front entrance of the spiritual center where I served as Spiritual Director. I placed it just above the “Welcome Home” banner that had lived tethered to the railing since we reopened our physical doors in the late summer of 2020.

This is the space where, every Sunday, my queer self affirms: “We are an open and affirming community. Whoever you are, and wherever you are on your spiritual path of discovery, know that you are absolutely welcome here.”

Or so I thought.

But that’s not really this story. That is the past, and with much time and spiritual practice, I am letting go of that narrative. It’s a tired story, anyway…one told too many times in the lives of radical feminists, queer folx, people of color, and other marginalized folx. (I’m not saying don’t tell your story, I’m saying for me, I’m tired of telling it to myself over and over. And it’s a story that is way too familiar to too many folx, so you can fill in the blanks and I’ll spare you the details this time.)

But I will say this: I did not fully understand in that moment that it would be the inciting incident for another major transition. It was the cosmic push from the Universe to birth my new ministry: Queer Spirit Collective.

So now, 7 months later, clarity has been revealed and the chapter of my life titled “Divine Discontent” or perhaps “Too Queer for Here?” is coming to a close. It’s time to start a new chapter. Heck, a whole new book.

Queer Joy: Activate. Queer Powers: Initiate. It is time to launch…the Collective!
