Geography

I've been thinking a little about geography, specifically where I want to live and why. I gave career services 2 preliminary options: pacific northwest and Chicago.

Why Pacific Northwest? Climate climate climate. Not just weather, but the personal climate. Though we're certainly all Americans in this country, there are definitely differences in the way people think and act from region to region. For exmaple, Texans have way more state pride than just about anyone. You ever go to a place and think "I could really see myself living here"? That's the feeling I got with that area, it's the same feeling I got the first/only time I visited Austin. I trust my wn instincts.

Why Chicago? People people people. Not the people of Chicago per se. Chicago people tend to be jerks. But the majority of people I know live within driving distance of Chicago, such that visiting my friends wouldn't require me to get on a plane. Which is a nice thing in of itself.

So which is more important, climate or people? Right now I'm sort of leaning towards climate. That's why I moved to Austin, and that worked out quite well. I was happy in Austin, and when I came back to Michigan, my friends could see that. (I'd be open to moving back to Austin, but the legal market is really oversaturated there.)

But what about the long run? Some people like to be near family as they get older, am I going to be one of those people? (I mean, I think part of that may have something to do with wanting your kids to be near grandparents, and since my desire to have kids is in the negative numbers, that won't factor in. But there are other reasons.) Will it not matter in the long run as people grow apart, or more positively, I become that excellent vacation prospect for my friends?

What factor played in more when you chose someplace to live? Or was there some other factor that drove your decision?

The bookstore gave me the wrong dang book for my torts class. RAH! I was going to try and get the rading done today, but since I just got ths syllabus today for the class, I was not aware I had the wrong book.

I really hate sitting through orientation, did I mention that already?

My section is going out tonight, and though I'm really not in the mood, I don't want to look anti-social. (I also think pre-gaming is the dumbest thing in the world.)

Wooooooooooo sections are out! Granted all I know is a letter and the other people in the section. A trip to the school is in order, maybe I can actually find out like, which classes I have.

ETA: Contracts, civil procedure, torts, criminal law, and legal research and writing. Only one class on Friday which is pretty sweet. I can't say contracts sounds like a lot of fun, but the rest doesn't look too bad. :) I think I'm most excited for torts.

I did a system reboot last night and Word seems to be working fine now. Thank god. I wrote a little on googledocs last night. It works fine, but large files take a long time to load. Given that I'm up to 63 pages on TKC, I had to wait a while.

Only 3 bigbangs unclaimed for art and guess who's one of them. :/ I need to stop checking the post, because it's getting frakking depressing.

I've got basically all of my administrative moving stuff done, so thankfully I can just chill today. Let me poor little legs recover from hiking on Tuesday too.

For whatever reason, Word refuses to open on my computer. I get an error message saying it is too large to run. So I'm attempting Google Docs to continue writing my big bang there. Also doing a system restore once my files finish backing up, so hopefully everything works tomorrow. :/ Added stress, so much fun.

My calves are killing me today. Plus I have a huge blister on my small toe, so I've had to wear flip-flops all day. Got my UVA id, plus went to the DMV where thankfully their system was running today and I was able to apply for a driver's license. I *think* that takes care of all the administrative stuff. Not having to set up cable/utilities is convenient.

I still haven't gotten around to the bsgficexchange fics. Hopefully I can read some before I start school and will be buried in law textbooks. I really have zero idea how much time studying will really take, because all I ever hear is "a lot". I'm sort of ready to just start school and get worrying over with. I would drop by the school today to see if section assignments are up, but I think the 2Ls are doing on-site interviews today, and I don't want to be in the way. I was really hoping that information would be *online*, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

I probably have the crappiest story summary ever for big bang, but what more do I say without spoiling the plot? TKC requires familiarity of DUFE and FUOT, simple as that. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone outside the Gaeta fandom has read them. :/

Went hiking today with a group of 5 guys. Damn they moved fast. I was about to die by the end of the hike, which, despite being only 6 miles, was half rough terrain and all at a higher elevation than all of Michigan. I think if I go again I need to work up to it as opposed to jumping in with two feet (I feel kinda bad for the guys, holding them up a bit). It was fun though, and it's a really pretty area.

How I attended 2 high schools at once
The state of Michigan has what is essentially a gifted a talented program in the form of schools that specialize in math and science. Michigan's network of said schools is actually one of the two largest in the country, at least when I was still in high school, with about 13 different ones. (Virginia has the other, and they refer to them as governor's schools.)

Other states have similar schools, though most of them are boarding schools that specialize in math and science but still teach the other stuff too.

The reason I know this, btw, is because all these schools are members of a parent organization called the NCSSSMST (National Consortium of Specialized Secondary Schools of Math, Science, and Technology. Yes, I have that memorized.) The NCSSSMST held student conferences and I went to a few.

Anyway. The math/science schools in Michigan aren't boarding schools but rather half day programs that teach only math, science, and computer science. All other classes you take at a regular old high school. They were all county/area wide, I believe, or at least the Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, and Berrien/Cass county ones were.

So, I spent half my school day at the Math and Science Center taking calculus, physics, Comp Sci, what have you, and the other half of the day at my local high school taking my German, English, history, band, and whatever else. Separate set of students and teachers at each place, thank GOD, because I would've gone insane if I had just been at my regular high school. Thus, 2 separate high schools at one time.

To make things even more confusing, I was also taking classes at the community college. :)

I shoulda gone to Busch Gardens

Today was what was supposed to be my relaxing day in Virginia Beach. Turned out to be more disappointing than relaxing. What was supposed to be a 3 hour or less drive was over 4, because traffic kept getting congested in the most random places (sometimes not even anywhere near a city). I didn't make it there until 2 (since I left later than originally planned), and I hadn't eaten lunch yet so I was really cranky. All the park places only took cash, and I couldn't find a Bank of America in sight so I had to go into Rite Aid and buy something. Good thing I was low on sunscreen. Parked the car successfully and went to get something to eat...and the first place I went wouldn't take credit cards either. So I ended up at Subway. Changed into my suit in the bathroom there.

Get to the beach and there's a red flag up. I could go in the water but not very far.

Absolutely no public bathrooms at the beach that I could see, so was going to change out of the suit in the Rite Aid I'd parked near....and they told me they'd closed their public restrooms for good. Arg!

Virginia Beach itself strikes me as sort of a second rate Miami. It was okay. I don't think I'll be driving 4 hours to get there again.

Went to Captain Chuck-a-mucks for dinner as I had planned. Though the crab was good, the portions were small, especially given what I paid. The owner was there working, but despite the fact that he walked by me a number of times, he never said "hello, welcome to chuck-a-mucks; hey, how are you today?; how are you liking the food?" nothing. I was disappointed with the place.

Despite my dislike for roller coasters, I may have been better off going on the Busch Gardens trip some people organized. *sigh*

I had an Ikea expedition today. It was supposed to be more a "trip", but turned out to be perhaps more than I bargained for. Ikea is about 2 hours from here, up in Woodbridge, which may or may not be considered a suburb of DC, I'm really not sure. And indeed it did take me 2 hours to get there.

I found lots of things I wanted...then discovered that the only box I could even reasonably fit in my car was for the dresser. So I bought the dresser and just said "alas" to the bookshelf, bed frame, and chair.

Remind me never ever to move to northern VA. 3:30 is when I left Ikea and I hit rush hour traffic. Not to mention the traffic continued almost until Fredericksburg, which is a full 50 miles from DC. Dear lord, 50 miles from Austin would get me south of New Braunfels. Our traffic jams didn't even make it quite to the southern city limit.

Since I had spotted a Target in Fredericksburg, I stopped there to pick up a mattress pad for the bed I had delivered this morning (no more twin OMGYAY). While there I found a bookshelf that was tall enough for what I wanted, was cheaper than the one at Ikea, and was in a box that fit in my car! Yay! So I bought that, a blanket, and a desk chair. I should've just said screw Ikea.

One other notable: the way it had me take out of Charlottesville, I had to turn on like 6 different roads to get to Highway 20. Well, Highway 20 runs right into downtown, so I decided to take that back. The speed limit on that road is 55, but that's more of a "we dare you to go 55 without hurtling off the road and killing yourself". Dear lord was that windy. I'll follow google next time.

Captain Chuck-a-mucks is in Virginia! \o/ Of all the places I've seen featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, this was my #1 "I wish I could go there" spot. I'm planning on going to Virginia Beach anyway this Saturday, just to chill at the beach for a day. And this place is sort of on the way. :D One word: CRAB.

Anybody here been to Virginia Beach previously? All I've ever seen of VA is Arlington and parts of the Appalachains (Harrisonburg, specifically), so the rest of the state I know very little about.

I tried to take a back way from the grocery store today and got on the highway to go to the next exit (which was my place). Not knowing what exit I was getting on at, I ended up going the wrong way on the highway and ended up in the next town over instead. The thing about I-64 is that all there is, is trees. No billboards, you can't even see any buildings on the side of the road until you hit downtown Richmond. I would've never known Charlottesville was even there if there weren't signs saying it was. Needless to say it makes me a little directionally challenged. Charlottesville proper I can get around just fine. Pretty much everything is on 29/Emmet St.

I can post from my car. Somewhere east of dallas. I got out about an hour later than anticpated, but still in good time. I should have used more boxes for mailing but oh well. It's being mailed to me thanks to a friend I totally owe big time. But being on the road is much less stressful. Can finally relax yay.
