Where to start? Activity-dependent alternative translation initiation generates multifunctional proteoforms in the brain

Adam Kosti et al. Mol Cell. .

Abstract

In this issue of Molecular Cell, Lee et al.1 report that alternative translation initiation can generate new proteoforms with distinct localization patterns in a neuronal activity-dependent manner.

Alternative Translation Initiation Overview (A) Schematic illustration of Lee et al findings demonstrating that RNA secondary structure influences ATI to generate distinct proteoforms from a single ORF. (B) Schematic highlighting major gaps in the field of ATI, including the role of AUG near-cognates in initiating translation, the role of RBPs in regulating ATI, and the identification of different peptides arising from the various ATI start sites.
