Wow. Is this thing still on? My last post was 3 years and almost 3 months ago. I suppose I ought to shut it down properly, but I still go here once a year to find old interesting posts, soooooo. Maybe some other time.

Friday's Hannibal episode

I adore how this show isn't afraid to show that a psyhopath does not operate with the same social rules as the rest of us. He has no sense of respecting personal space and frequently does oddly intimate and seductive things to Will. And Will, being damaged, does not object to them even though he knows he should. Even though the whole world knows he should. Because this, as anything that involves Hannibal, is as fucking *creepy* as it is beautiful.

This was as amazing episode. Lots of nods to Thomas Harris's books and characters (the bird was a starling, the tear soaked paper in a drink, Will "silencing" the horse), and Jeremy Davies's portrayal of the brain damaged Peter Bernardone was one of the best performances I've ever seen. His mannerisms, his eyes, his face, his body language, and his speech flaw was so stunningly realistic I actually thought they had cast someone strongly autistic. I love how this show is so obsessive about getting every character just the right kind of weird and quirky. Normal doesn';t operate within this.

I also love Hannibal's reaction to the Peter's admission that his social worker is inside the horse. He raises his eyebrows and thinks it's bloody *weird*. But it's not because he's disgusted, it's because he doesn't understand Peter's reasons for what he did. He put a murdered woman inside a horse because he cared about her and wanted her reborn, he put his murdering social worker inside one because he wanted him to feel trapped. Those are not the emotionally based, cause and effect reasons Hannibal experience. But the rest of us can sympathize, and even Will understands Peter. Again it shows how much of a different world Hannibal is in.

And I'm very glad that they made Will's going back to therapy with Hannibal make perfect sense, because I *was* a bit meh about that fact. But his reasons are perfectly logical. Remember how Will said in the beginning of season one "I don't find you that interesting" to Hannibal? In this episode he said the opposite. "I don't want to kill you anymore. Not when I finally find you interesting." All Hannibal has wanted is to catch Will's interest, and now Will lets him know that he has it. It's like a drug for Hannibal and it reels him in. Notice all of Hannibal's little smiles. He can barely contain his glee in that scene. It's just brilliant.

Brian Zeller's apology to Will was very moving. Will says he doesn't owe him an apology as he was just following the evidence, but Zeller says that it didn't stop Beverly Katz from having her eyes open, and had she thought any of they others would listen she'd have told them what she knew. "She didn't", he finishes. This makes Will turn around and accept his hand because Zeller was apologizing for his part in Beverly's death, and that is a thing that Will can accept and even share with him. Again, brilliantly written.

That moment when an actor from The Trojan Women wishes you get well soon on Twitter O_O

That other moment when I recommend a sci fi film called Astronaut: The Last Push, which despite the clumsy title is a beautiful film about isolation in space, and the writer/director retweets those exact words. Ooops, haha.
