I didn't have enough time to post icons this year yet so here goes the 1st post :)

i've been thinking if i should make a progression post or not because ~~i was feeling too lazy~~ i wasn't sure that anything about my icons has changed that much but since rocketgirl2 kindly shared the codes, i decided to do it c:

january

(1) i started 2012 with a fantasy battle for iconbattling and some other random icons

february

(2)&(3) i remember that in february i was struggling with graphics trying to make anything decent. i did round 15 @ 20inspirations and made a post with requests and misc. there are very few icons that i actually like. sigh

march

(4) some more request icons and even though i never watch glee anymore i made icons for 10in20 @ eliteglee which turned out pretty good c:

(5) didn't icon much this month. made an amy pond set for round17 - down the rabbit hole @ 20inspirations which was reeeeally fun

(6) probably my favorite month iconing wise. so many icons i'm stil veeeery proud of. if i say that i like pretty much every icon in this post, what does it say about me?:x

(7)&(8)&(9) wow, considering that i was sitting exams and graduating high school in june, this was a really productive month :D i did an abc game of thrones battle with bobby 12feethigh which was very inspiring and fun and i also participated in 20in20 @ hpotterelite

(10)&(11) round7 - jess and sam's retro roadtrip adventure @ turbo_rumble and i made some animation icons (yay!) and a captain america set for avengers20in20

(12)&(13) basically this whole month is like yay battles! i took part in three :3 theiconquest opened and instead of completing quests, i jumped into iq_coliseum oops. i mean i'm still to complete a single quest, this is a shame

(14) quite proud if this month's icons actually. 2 more battles @ iq_coliseum, did i mention i love battles? and the7days opened, yay!

as for icon resolution i really really r e a l l y need to start making icons for theiconquest, no excuses! i also hope to icon stock and disney more, because that's where i started as an iconmaker and i'm starting to miss it:)

atm vol.3: tutorials #4-5

wow i'm actually so embarassed, i saw that the ATM-4 is going to come up soon and then i remembered that it's already been like 6 months :c the procrastinator in me will never die apparently. anyhow, i've decided to write all the tuts that have been requested because i promised so yeah. i hope you'll still find them at least a tiny bit useful :3

01		I start with this image. I decided to focus on Joan so I cropped it respectively :3 I never really care if I got out the image with crops, I just go for a better composition and then deal with the black empty spaces later.
02		Later comes now! On the right side, I used the Spot Healing Brush Tool to draw that beige stripe (a door?), I usually use a brush around 16px and it just does all the work. If the ~door line isn't smooth, I just go back through history and do it again and again until I like it. After that, I took the usual brush (#3f4b62, normal) and painted over the background on the left.
03		Gradient Fill: Black, White (the standard palette), linear, angle 135, scale 100%, set on Soft light, 100%. Color Fill: #eab9c6, set on Soft light, 27%, I also masked some parts on the left, like this.
04		Curves: output 201 input 180, output 161 input 135, output 96 input 86. Brightness/contrast: b +43 c -41. (both set on Normal 100%)
05		Vibrance: vibrance +91. (set on Normal 100%) Yes, I have no shame, I use Vibrance all the time :x also, all the layers up to this moment.
06		Yay, the fun part! Now the textures and my favorite color blobs come in! First, I masked out a slightly grunge texture like this and set it on Screen, 100%. I for the life of me can't remember what the exact textures was but any with white spots (tiny and not too much) should work.
07		Then I painted a bit to bring out the colors and add some shadows. This for bluer background, this for redder hair and this for shadowing. All on Soft light, 100%
08		This, texture by deny1984 set on Screen, 30% (I lifted it up a bit, like 10px). This texture by deny1984, the right part erased, set on Screen, 30%.
09		Again, a bit of painting to add colors and I ended up with this set on Soft Light, 100%. This texture by 12feethigh, , set on Soft Light, 35%.
10		Vibrance: vibrance +50. Brightness/contrast: b +45 c -10. (both set on Normal 100%). Finally I stamp the visible layers, Filter -> Sharpen and set it on 20% opacity. This is the full layer palette. Voila!

01		I've never seen anything easier, I tell you. This is the original image. I crop it so that I have some negative space above.
02		My most ~usual base preparation: I duplicate the image twice and set the first duplicate to Screen (56%) and the second to Soft Light (100%). Then I paint with a black brush to hide all the unnecessary stuff in the background (Normal, 100%)
03		wow, what a change! MAGIC! No, not really. Just this texture by ??? (please, tell me if you know the maker! I'm actually embarassed I don't remember and don't write down things like this :() set it on Screen, 100%. Brightness/contrast: b +21 c 0.
04		I wanted to created a ~haunted atmosphere, like Hermione is disappearing so I Stamp visible layers, Filter->Blur->Motion Blur (distance 5px). Then I masked the blurriness on Hermione's face.
05		To add a bit more light, I again stamp visible. Then I do a trick I've learned from some tut a while ago (by erzsebet I believe): Filter->Distort->Diffuse Glow(graininess 2, glow amount 7, clear amount 13), Filter->Artistic->Paint Daubs (brush size 3, sharpness 2), Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur 3,5px and set this magic layer on Soft light, 30%. Brightness/contrast: b +10 c 0.</b> And done! This is the full layer palette

01		I start with this image. I decided to go for negative space (especially because the cap quality is not very good) so I cropped the image and then used the Spot healing Brush to fill in the space in the top part of the icon.
02		Duplicate, set on Screen 100% (I masked out he parts over Derek's face and Odette's face and dress because it looked too bright). Vibrance: vibrance +36, set on Color 100%.
03		This texture by fuuurs set on Soft light, 47%.
04		This texture by fuuurs set on Screen, 64% (masked the left part with a 30% opacity brush a bit because the texture looked overpowering) The layers look like this so far (also get a better idea of my masks).
05		Brightness/contrast: b +18 c -11. Vibrance: vibrance +32. (both set on Normal 100%)
06		Okay, you might not see a huge difference here but I just doing this so I can't help myself. I took a yellow brush (40% opacity soft brush, I guess. layer set on Soft light, 100%) and painted over Odette's hair to bring out the yellow in her hair like it's supposed to be.
07		This, texture by fuuurs set on Soft light, 24%.
08		Vibrance: vibrance +84. Brightness/contrast: b +60 c +4.
09		I painted with black, white and yellow (40% opacity soft brush, I guess. layer set on Soft light, 100%) to add a bit more shadowing to the icon. This is the full layer pallette/ Voila!

01		I start with this image and crop it. Then I paint (layer set on Normal, 100%) in the background to conceal the distracting parts.
02		Curves: output 152 input 114, output 183 input 152. Vibrance: vibrance +46. (both set on Normal 100%)
03		I took this texture by ??? set it on Soft light, 100% and erased some parts so that in end it looked like this.
04		Photo Filter: color #ec8a00, density 25%, preserve luminosity. Brightness/contrast: b +20 c 0.
05		This, texture by ??? set on Screen, 100%.
06		Stamp visible, duplicate, Soft light, 100%.
07		To add a bit more shadows I paint with a black and then a white brush and set that layer on Soft light 84%.
08		Brightness/contrast: b +10 c -28. Stamp visible, Filter→Sharpen→Sharpen, opacity 14%. (here are all the layers, have a look). And done!

12feethigh and I were talking about Chatroom the other day and realized that there are no screencaps so I volunteered to cap it. (this movie is so iconable!) it's my first time making screencaps and I really have no idea why I capped it in .png but I had already sorted the caps when I realized it. so I'm sorry for the extra size (they're very hq tho). the samples are all normal .jpgs.

	This is the image I'm starting with and the cropped version. I was asked to do a crossover of Amy (Doctor Who) and Stefan (The Vampire Diaries) so I chose a cap which would be easy to blend - Amy is standing behind the Doctor so I immediately thought that I could replace him with Stefan :D Duplicate, set on Screen 100%.
	Made a new layer (Normal, 100%), took a black brush and just painted over the Doctor.
	Cropped a cap of Stefan, dragged it into the icon, set Screen 100%. Duplicate, set on Screen 100%. (I think) I Color Balanced the colors in the duplicate to add more magenta and also blurred it a bit. It looked like this. I also masked the left parts of these layers to leave Amy as she was.
	This texture by fuuurs set on Soft light, 44% (masked the right part with a 30% opacity brush over Stefan)
	Curves: output 169 input 132, output 213 input 176. I always use the RGB Curves because I'm lazy to work with others:P Also I never go for the specific settings, I just adjust lighting/shadows/contrast to my liking.
	Black&white gradient set to Soft light, 63%. btw, I use this a lot, it's a great way to add some lighting/shadow to your icon.
	This, then this texture (both by fuuurs) set on Soft light, 100%. Then I took a black soft brush (about 20% opacity) and painted over Stefan's face a bit (layer set to Soft light, 100%).
	Brightness/contrast: b +48 c -26. This texture by florescentia (@tumblr) re-sized and set on Screen, 90%.
	Vibrance: vibrance +36. Brightness/contrast: b +16 c -40.
	Color fill: #a35f58 on Soft light, 100%.
	Aaand one last thing! Sharpening:) Merge everything, duplicate, Filter→Sharpen→Sharpen. lower the opacity of the sharpened duplicate to 32%. Voila!

FINALLY Bobby 12feethigh and I have finished our Game Of Thrones battle!:D
it's epic, I'm telling you. I've never had so much fun making icons for a battle and I just love the results:3 we wanted to do something ~out of the box so we decided to make a GoT ABC. + we made a list of themes and randomized it so each letter got a random theme which was even more challenging. idk if it makes sense so yeah, enjoy :D

yay, i've changed the layout today! i've been looking for smth like this forever and came across this one by lu_hesperia and she kindly let me use it :) psychedelic_flu

to the point of this entry:
I've never written a tutorial because I think i'm kinda bad at explaining things but sstarlz asked me about a couple of icons from my last post and I couldn't say no:3
also, you might be disappointed because most of my coloring these days is just playing around with this pack of textures by deny1984. it is a godsend, I'm telling you.
long story short, read at your own risk :D

ICON TUTORIALS

#one
from to
1. First of all, I chose caps that would work together for blending - the Tardis and Amy's profile. what's good about them is that they're from the same scene meaning that the original colors/lightning are similar and so it will be easier balance out the coloring.
2. then I crop, nothing extraordinary. 2 Amy layers are above the Tardis one - one is set on Screen, 100% and the other on Soft Light, 58%. voila. I also added a black blob (Normal, 100%) in between the Tardis ad Amy caps, on her cheeck, to erase the bushes.
3. textures - fun times! this + this + this (deny1984) all set on Soft Light, 100%
4. fill color - #2a2b5d, Screen 100%
5. here's the hard to explain part. color #2a2b5d (just an orange-ish one), the layer is set on Lighten, 100% and I made brushstrokes (the basic brush, hardness 0%, opacity ~40%) in the top part of the icon where Amy was supposed to be ginger:D what we have now
6. texture (deny1984) - Soft Light, 60% (I erased the part where the texture overlapped Amy's face so that it wouldn't be so purple)
7. curves: RGB output 186 input 159, output 137 input 117
8. vibrance: vibrance +51. ta-da!
9. once more, colors blobs time:3 1) green blobs in the bottom left set on Soft light, 100% 2) same green, a bit different strokes set on Screen, 100% 3) blue blobs set on Screen, 100% on the right side where the Tardis is. looks like this
10. linear gradient, angle 90; black -> transparent; Soft light, 48%.
11. the Tardis cap, Screen, 44%. I masked the left and the right part so that there's just the Tardis
12. this texture (deny1984) - Screen, 7%
13. vibrance: vibrance +64.
merge everything. what we've got so far. most of the work is done, then goes the tweaking. I only got the .psd saved till this step so i'm tweaking with you;3
14. text (if you want, ofc). font - splurge, Normal 75%. #b8e2ea
15. duplicate the base and set on Soft light, 100%. here
16. I wasn't satisfied with the left part of the icon so I used brush again. greens set on Screen 100%, then browns and oranges on Amy's face set on Soft Light, 100%. the I painted Amy's lips red Soft Light, 100% (yes, I always cheat like that:D). result
17. black brush, layer set on Soft Light, 100% - Amy's chin and the left border of the Tadis. look
18. photo filter - warming (85)
19. color fill #221928, Screen 100%
20. merge all the layers, filter - sharpen: amount 37% radius 1,0px remove gaussian blur.
tada! (okay, I just noticed I got a typo in the word 'space' in the new icon, sorry:3). I think this is it. the result is slightly different because it all depends on the brushes, really.

10. texture (i don't remember who made it ;_;) - Screen 86% + I erased the middle part.
DONE! now merge everything, duplicate, top layer set on Soft light, 40% and Smart sharpen till you like it :)

#three
from to
1. I decided to go for the negative space with this cap so I made a wide crop. the I used the Paint Bucket Tool #112d37 and filled the empty space on top. then I used Spot Healing Brush Tool painted on the filled area (all at one time) and got this. all ready for coloring!
2. texture (deny1984) - Screen 70%
3. texture (deny1984) - Soft light 35%
4. curves: RGB output 173 input 166, output 111 input 97, output 52 input 48
5. vibrance: vibrance +75
6. linear gradient, angle 90; black -> white (the default one); Soft light, 48%.
7. texture (deny1984) - Screen 100%, bottom part erased.
8. vibrance: vibrance +48
9. photo filter - warming (85) (masked some parts on the left to leave the blue vibrant)
voila!
10. merge everything, duplicate, top layer set on Soft light, 25%
11. Brightness/Contrast: brightness +32
12. merge everything, filter - sharpen: amount 37% radius 1,0px remove gaussian blur.
DONE!:)

do you see now that I wasn't joking or exaggerating when I said I only use one texture pack? :3
also, omg, writing tuts is exhausting:O

PREPARING THE BASE. I had this screencap and I thought I had to do something crazy with it:3 I cropped it, nothing crazy yet.
duplicate - Soft light, 100%
duplicate - Screen, 100%
here's when I went crazy and it's hard to put into words:3 let me show you. I duplicated the very 1st layer, moved it to the left, moved it to right and set everything on Screen, 100%. I also used black blobs to fix the blending mess:3
time for coloring!
1. curves: RGB output 210 input 166, output 122 input 91
2. texture (deny1984) - Screen, 25%
3. texture (deny1984) - Screen, 30%
4. texture (deny1984) - Soft light 100% (masked the part on Rory and Amy's faces on the right) - look.
5. cheating colors again - I painted Rory's shirt bright yellow and set it on Soft light 100%. here
6. then I added shadowing to their faces - a black blob on the left image and a white blob on the right, layer set on Soft light 50% - see for yourself
7. Brightness/Contrast: brightness +10 contrast +28
8. vibrance: vibrance +60
9. levels - RGB 20 1,16 255
10. vibrance: vibrance +80 (masked on the faces on the left) here
11. brush: orange on Amy's hair, blue on Rory's neck/back set on Overlay 100%. tada
almost all ready:)
12. I painted a yellow line (3 px, Screen 40%) where the caps meet. merge everything.
13. duplicate, top layer set on Soft light, 35% and Smart sharpen
14. Brightness/Contrast: brightness +7
15. merge everything, filter - sharpen: amount 37% radius 1,0px remove gaussian blur.
voila!
