11:07 pm - Charity Auction Goodies
After a brief relapse (PSA: don't go to a hockey tournament followed by a huge mall with a thirteen-year-old when you have a concussion) I'm feeling good enough to get back on the computer.

I've been meaning to do a post highlighting all the lovely things I've won in charity auctions the past two years for age, so here that is.

For the Marvel Trumps Hate 2018 auction, I won the artistic talents of [personal profile] potofsoup. I requested a comic in our shared Wuxia Avengers universe, and created a lovely comic with monk!Bruce and fox spirit!Nat bonding.

This is the first page.

The full comic can be found on AO3.

For last year's Fandom Trumps Hate auction, I won the writing talent of [personal profile] marginaliana.

She wrote a fab Grand Tour story for me, Banked Track, a wonderful Richard/James story, with Richard confronting various fears.

And finally, for the 2019 Marvel Trumps Hate auction, I won a two character cross stitch from Rebel Meg Cuties.

She created this fab Steve and Bucky piece.
Cross-stitch Stucky

And then I commissioned her to do this Christmas pressie for a friend.
Cross-stitch Rocket and Groot

And that's it!

09:54 pm - I... Actually Feel Okay!
Things are on the upswing.

With the exception of a minor bounce back of concussion symptoms on Monday, I finally feel like a normal human being. Also my wrist is...not perfect, but better.

So, for the first time since September 14, I finally drove the car tonight! Without the Sweetie!

My wrist is still sore enough that I don't think I'd want to take on any long distance drives yet, but I did okay. This is great news because the two times I tried driving in December I noped right out mere seconds after I started.

And just because it is now my favourite pic of me, have this gem I found whilst digitizing my mom's slide collection. I like to call it "Little Zed Will Absolutely Fuck Your Shit Up." Just look at that clenched fist. (And yeah, I couldn't resist making an icon of it.)

11:01 am - Oh, Hockey. :(
I had thoroughly intended after the holidays to do some catch up posts here. Yuletide gifts and reveal. Pics of our lovely and complete kitchen reno. Fannish rambling.

But when my physiotherapist said my wrist had healed enough and cleared me for going on the ice, carefully, I thought I’d start out slow and help out at Ros’ team practice. I’d just be helping out the coach and dumping pucks back to the girls, I thought. What could happen?

What happened was one of the girls from the team we were practising with skated into me at full speed, knocked me into the air, and I cracked my head into the ice on the way down. Even with my helmet on, I’ve ended up with a mild concussion.

So, I’m on restricted screen access and half days at work, and am spending a lot of time in dark rooms and sleeping a lot more than normal. (I attended a two hour meeting at work on Monday and then slept for a good part of the next 24 hours. 😬)

I think I’m on the upswing. I woke up at 9:30 today, not noon, and the dizziness and fogginess is starting to fade. But on doctor’s order, I just need to resist the urge to do too much too soon and set my recovery back.

And I think I’m probably going to pull out of the winter session hockey lessons I’d signed up for, and carefully think about my future with the game. (The Sweetie and my mom would be very happy if I never played again. ☹️)

05:03 pm - The Much Belated TIFF Post
I was originally planning to do a TIFF wrap up post as soon as the festival was over, but the whole breaking my wrist thing delayed that. It's five weeks today since I fetched up in the E.R., and it's only been the last week and a bit that I've been able to type with all the fingers on my left hand...for a little bit at a time, anyway. (It's taken me a week to finish writing this up!)

Anyway, here's what I saw.

09:36 pm - Adventures in Coaching
With footie season done, it's time to gear up for hockey season. So, this Saturday I skipped one of my TIFF films to attend the women only coaching seminar. It was an on-ice lesson and I was looking forward to getting on the ice again.

Remember last week I said I was diagnosed with osteoporosis? (You can see where this is going, right?)

I'm on the ice for five minutes, I'm standing there listening to the instructor to explain the next drill, and I absentmindedly lean back on my skates.

The thing with hockey skates is that the blades are rounded. Lean backwards and you keep going. So. I start to fall, I flail around, and I fall. Right on my left hand.

Crunch.

Yep, I broke my left wrist. And yep, I'm left-handed.

I'm going to be in a cast for 4 to 6 weeks. I'm being optimistic and hoping I can play with my team soon after that.

All-in-all, I'm going to be quite happy to see the end of 2019.

P.S. Typing one-handed sucks.

11:50 am - Footie 2019 Wrap Up
It's been a crazy couple of months, including getting slammed at work, doing a gut everything kitchen renovation (still in progress), and having a ton of medical tests. (Almost all the medical tests turned out fine, except for finding out I have osteoporosis at the age of 53. Fun!)

One (mostly) good thing, on top of all the craziness, has been coaching Ros' soccer team. It's been a really nice team, some of the girls who weren't as experienced have really come into their own, and they've been working together and making actual passing plays consistently.

There were two things that weren't so good this season.

The first thing was another team's coach going berserk during a game and yelling not only at the ref but at one of my players. I'll add the my player had been fouled by someone on his team and was lying on the ground crying at the time. For the first time in seven years of coaching, I made a formal complaint to the club. I don't know that much happened because of the complaint, but that was clearly crossing a fucking line. The coach in question was one of the shouty dads who was one of my assistants a couple of years ago, so while I was upset about the incident, it unfortunately wasn't surprising. One of our moms knows him from hockey and calls him Drunky McShouty, which the Sweetie and I have now officially adopted as his name.

The second thing was during a round robin game in the playoffs, a player on another team called one of my players a homophobic slur. None of the girls told us, but I found out from one of the parents, and Ros confirmed it had happened. I went immediately to the coach of the other team (who is a really great guy), who gave his team a talk about that not being acceptable. I also let the player on my team and her mom know that they could make a complaint if they wanted to, though they elected to let it go.

But back to the positive things!

The team had a great season, and managed to come in second. And then on playoff weekend, they won! The whole thing! They were second in the round robin pool, so moved on to the semis, and then had great games in the semi and final. The final game, they completely dominated the other team and it would have been a blow out except that the other team's goalie was exceptional.

For the first time, Ros got two trophies: one for finalist in the regular season, and one for winning the playoffs. So go Ros.

Here's me and Ros after the trophy ceremony.Collapse )

11:41 pm - Footie! The 2019 Edition
It's been a big week for footie, even apart from the U.S. Women's win of the World Cup. (I may have been rooting for Canada, but I love Megan Rapinoe and the U.S. WNT.)

I'm coaching Ros' team again this year, and even though Ros is at camp that meant hitting the field for a game and a practice. (I'm co-coaching with a mom of one of Ros' friends, but this week her kid was under the weather, so it was solo coaching for me, with the Sweetie drafted to do lineups.)

We had perfect weather for both game and practice, not too warm with just a hint of a breeze to keep you cool. And even though we only had 9 girls turn out, they won handily, 9 - 4. (That was way higher scoring than any of our other games, but the other team only had 7 girls, which meant they had no subs playing 7 on 7.)

Six girls turned out for the practice, so I only ran 30 minutes of drills before kicking them loose a bit early.

In other footie news, I was in charge of a Soccer Night for my work. I joined the Social Committee this year, and figured I might as well take that on as one of my lead activities. I also figured how hard could it be?

The answer to that question was... pretty fucking hard.

The school right beside our office where we usually have Soccer Night was completely booked up for the entire summer and into September. Then ensued several weeks of me trying to find another field to book that wasn't so far that people couldn't easily get to it. And then figuring out what day people would actually show up for. And also harassing our finance manager to sign the damn contract for booking the field. And to give me a cheque to pay for it. And then getting people to sign up. And there were thunderstorms sweeping through the city earlier in the afternoon so I kept fielding texts from people asking if it was cancelled. (It wasn't.) And then a bunch of people dropped out when big meetings went way over time. So, that was a lot.

But on the positive side, we had 8 people show up so we could play 4 a side, and a few more attended to cheer us on, and I didn't embarrass myself even though it was stinking hot and I was playing against people who were mostly 20 years younger, so yay!

10:50 pm - Cap RBB Fic: Shoot a Hole into the Sun (Natasha/Sam, Bucky/Steve)
I've been spending what little spare time I have these days writing my [community profile] caprbb fic. Which is now done and posted!

Shoot a Hole into the Sun (28211 words) by PR Zed, keire_ke

Fandom: Captain America (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Natasha Romanov/Sam Wilson, James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers
Characters: Natasha Romanov (Marvel), James "Bucky" Barnes, Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson (Marvel), Bruce Banner, Tony Stark, Jarvis (Iron Man movies)
Additional Tags: Friends to Lovers, Hurt/Comfort, everyone lives in avengers tower
Summary: It was Nat who’d noticed the pattern. Every afternoon at exactly the same time, Steve and Barnes would share a heart-in-their eyes-hug, and then moon over each other at a table in their favourite coffee shop in the Tower.

Sam and Nat spend their afternoons making fun of the old people in love. Which maybe isn’t the smartest thing in the world when they just might be in love themselves.

The inspiring Sam/Nat art is by [personal profile] keire_ke. Check it out in the Tumblr post below. It's gorgeous!

Masterposts: AO3 Post | Tumblr Masterpost

[personal profile] halotolerant was kind enough to beta the story and save me from myself several times.

10:47 pm - AO3 Top Ten Hits Meme - 2019 Edition
List your ten fics at AO3 that have had the most hits.

I've been doing this meme around this time of year since 2011, mostly as a way of tracking both what I'm writing and what bubbles up. I missed last year (with Ros doing her black belt, the whole year was kind of nuts and I didn't do much posting) but thought I'd jump back in this year. I'm still big into Marvel, and this year is the first time the top ten is all Marvel, all the time.

This way to the listCollapse )

10:21 pm - London and Take That 2019
So, last weekend I ventured across the pond to see visit [personal profile] halotolerant and see Take That's Odyssey Tour. Twice! With a bonus theatre outing to see Tom Hiddleston in Pinter's Betrayal.

I've been trying to put up a post about the trip all week, but I haven't had time until the evening, at which point the jet lag has inevitably taken me down. But tonight I'm still more or less awake, so here goes.

I got Halo to take this pic in front of the TT poster outside the O2, and I have to say it didn't turn out too badly. (The sepia tone is courtesy of a non-fannish friend who got hold of the pic on Facebook.)

More pics and wittering about theatre, TT and Stucky this wayCollapse )

06:42 am - Fic: Full Circle
So, I saw Endgame, and was inevitably enraged by the way they sidelined Bucky. (Heck, even the Sweetie, after he saw it, was like, "Wow, they really didn't want Bucky in that movie, did they?").

And I have inevitably written a fixit fic.

Full Circle (1128 words)
Fandom: Captain America (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers, Offscreen James "Bucky" Barnes/Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers
Additional Tags: Post-Endgame, Endgame Fix-It, Time Travel

Summary:
The two of them sit on the bench for the longest time, staring out at the shimmering surface of the lake in front of them, a pregnant silence building between them. </p>

Steve is the one who speaks first.

“I saved him,” he says. “I couldn’t save you, but I saved him.”

A big thank you to [personal profile] halotolerant for providing the title and helping make it better.

11:20 pm - Hockey News, Good and Bad
It's been the final week of hockey for both me and Ros.

I played my final game on Tuesday, and went out on a high. My teammates and our volunteer coaches all said I played my best game of the season, and it certainly felt like I was getting first to the puck and shooting it where I meant to most of the time.

Today was Ros' last game, and she and the rest of our D played a really solid game. (They lost, but not by much, and it was to a stronger team.)

That's the good news.

The bad news, which I got on my phone just as Ros was coming off the ice, is that the Canadian Women's Hockey League, the one professional women's league in this country, has just been disbanded because they couldn't make it financially. I am doubly sad about this because I was just at the final playoff game for the league last week, and we were going to get family season's tickets for next season.

And I'm angry that the massively talented women in the league, who for my money play far more exciting hockey than the men's professional leagues, minor or NHL, and without the nonsense of fights every period, don't even have the option of playing for even the rather low pay they were getting in the CWHL.

Because I've been looking at it all season, I ordered myself a jersey of the Toronto CWHL team, the Furies, to wear when I'm doing lessons, and got Ros a Furies fleece.

06:51 pm - March Madness - One and Done
It's March Madness, which mean it's the one time of the year I make time to watch some basketball.

I support the Wisconsin Badgers, since that's my grad school alma mater, and also Bucky Badger is the dorkiest/awesome-est mascot out there. Last year, after a couple of years of nearly taking it all, the Badgers didn't make the tournament.

This year they made it, but they just got knocked out in the first round by Oregon, 54 - 72. They were tied at the half, but then Oregon just killed them. (I'm sure the Sweetie was amused listening to me scream at the TV every time Wisconsin had a turnover or missed a three point shot.)

On the one hand, I'm sad my team is out.

On the other, that's a bunch of time I've got back for writing Marvel fic with the other important Bucky in my life!

08:28 am - Two Days to Go...
In two days, my website will be no more.

So, if you haven't yet downloaded any of my vids, they're all up here: http://przed.com/vids/vidfiles/

But that's not totally the end for my vids.

The lovely [personal profile] morgandawn kindly took it upon herself to help me create an account at the Internet Archive, and then went an uploaded nine of my vids. You can find them at https://archive.org/details/@przed.

The vids there are both streamable and downloadable, so that's awesome. And I'll be uploading the rest as I have time.

Thank you Morgan!

11:23 pm - Fave Trope Meme
Figured I'd give this fanfic showdown meme a shot. It took two runs through to get a list close to my faves. (I used the "I Like Both" and "No Opinion" options the first time through, and Found Families ended up wayyy down the list instead of top 3 like it should be.)

The top 10 here are definitely bulletproof tropes for me, the next 10 or 15 are ones I definitely enjoy, and the bottom 5 I mostly have zero interest in, except that I've found a few Marvel writers who are great enough to tempt me to read the occasional A/B/O fic.

10:57 pm - Zed, the Hockey Player
I have somehow, in the last three years, become a hockey player.

Well, it's not a total mystery. I started taking lessons so I could help out with my daughter's team, and then discovered that it was fun. And this year I figured I was good enough after two years of lessons that I'd join our clubs senior women's league.

And being in the league, meant that this year I got my very own hockey picture!

Look at this!Collapse )
