Healthy Holidays: Tips and Tricks for Navigating Holiday Stress

If you find that the holidays are a stressful time of year for you, you’re not alone! According to the American Psychological Association, nearly 9 out of 10 Americans experience stress as the holidays approach. Spikes in stress can weaken the immune system, which is why it’s important to prioritize your health throughout the holiday season.  

Find time for self-care: Practicing the five C’s of self-care on a regular basis can help improve mood, lower stress, and strengthen immunity.

  3. Coping – Find healthy ways to manage stress through hobbies and relaxation 
  4. Community – Participate in supportive groups and shared activities  
  5. Commitment – Practice these steps as daily habits to support mental wellbeing

Get outdoors: While the holidays bring colder weather, spending just 15 minutes outdoors each day has been shown to lower cortisol levels, reduce heart rate and blood pressure, and boost focus and memory.   

Nourish your body: Support healthy blood sugar levels by pairing sweets with fiber-rich foods, eating fruits and vegetables to maintain energy throughout the day, and adding vitamin C to recharge your immune system.  

Prioritize sleep: To manage stress, maintain a consistent sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime routine, ensure a peaceful sleep environment, and avoid stimulants. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and limiting screen time before bed also improve sleep quality and stress resilience.
