I am currently replaying Vagrant Story because I think it is totally the greatest game ever made (and if you are going to disagree this point, uh, don't).

Then I realized I can't find much decent VS fanfiction anymore between losing bookmarks from ages ago and the sites I could recall closing. So, basically, if you've ever read a Vagrant Story fanfic (and I'm pretty sure I have people on my flist who have written it so I'm pretty sure I'm not totally waving my hands in the air for no reason) that you can still find, please comment with it. ♥

He has been preparing for this for days now. The deceit almost feels natural, or as natural as anything feels anymore.

The world is distorted without eyes. The forests and jungles of his childhood are a place of shadows and jarring colours and the bamboo are bars, the vines chains. He has no freedom, he has no body, and he has no family anymore. The world has every right to be ugly anymore.

The only of those things he can have now is freedom, and he will not be denied any longer, not with this power at his fingertips - not that he has fingertips now, but this borrowed set will do for now.

"Jacob," he calls, a sharp tone that can't match her ring but is the fairest impersonation any could muster. He will have to study this better, but for now it is enough to make his brother jump and turn.

He meets Jacob's eyes for the first time since he was thrown into the light with with his mother's cold, dead gaze.

Leaves rustle behind Eloise, and her hand seeks the trigger of the gun at her side as she turns. Behind her is a face she's only seen once and already knows she will remember for the rest of her life. Daniel smiles weakly, and spreads his hands at his side in a peaceful gesture.

She puts both shells into him, and his smile falls briefly before it's replaced with a very different one.

"You would kill me again?" he asks, though even from the brief time she saw, she knows Daniel will not smile with the corners of his mouth up like that, never was so immune to bullets, never will meet her eyes with force enough to make her want to look away. Her hands move quickly, trying to reload as swiftly as possible even as she knows it won't chase this thing wearing her son's face away.

She sneers, "Get the hell out of here." His smile widens, and he saunters around, slowly moving in a wide circle around her.

"Or what, you'll call Richard?" He pauses for a step, and she raises the gun again. "Oh, I will - on one condition." The Others know little enough about some of the island's strangest mysteries, but there is one rule they have been taught clearly. Strangers are not to be trusted, and talkative, clever strangers that look like dead people are to be shot on sight, repeatedly. Eloise does not run for help, and she does not fear the unknown. She is beginning to wonder, however, if these are mistakes.

"I need not have died in vain, Mother."

"You are not my son," Eloise chokes out between her teeth. She gestures with her gun, the comforting weight of it's sweet capacity for violence the only thing grounding her at this moment, even as she logically knows she's already lost it. The vile thing lets her have the small menaces of her usual power. With intelligent people, there's no need to demonstrate twice.

"He need not have died in vain, then," he wet his lips, and looks at her, Daniel's sad eyes mesmerizing. "Can Jacob promise you that?"

Eloise scoffs, and tries not to turn around and run. She is not hearing this. Her breath is not coming faster than usual between parted lips, her eyes aren't blinking. She is going to go back, she is going to tell Richard what this beast has told her. No, she is going to wake up and this will be a bad dream. The island, the constant vigilence, is getting to her.

"Jacob," she begins, one finger slipping up and down on it's grip on her shotgun, her toe digging into the ground as she shifts her weight. The silence of the forest is palpable. She feels like a lone actor on a stage, forgetting her lines, and wondering why no one can whisper them to her. Jacob has never spoken to her. She will not doubt Jacob.

"Jacob," he pronounces the word with a disdain she's never heard before, "didn't save him. Jacob wanted him to die, for his own purposes. You might even say for a game." He looks wistful for a moment, before he shifts once more to an immitation far too faithful for her already tattered nerves to Daniel's pleading, dying gaze.

"I just need one favor. In the future. You can be the one to save the island, to make your son a hero."

Eloise is used to control. Her words are obeyed. She does not feel alone or confused. She is not spoken down to or swayed by strange men in the jungle. She doesn't stare at her feet.

"You can make up your mind later. I trust you'll make the right decision." There are no sounds, but he is gone and Eloise is alone once more.

She swears, and kicks a tree, before heading back to their camp.

She does not tell anyone.

In his jungle, the fake Daniel Faraday nods to himself. It will take many years. Perhaps as many as he spent living with the Roman survivor camp, as many as once seemed like a lifetime.

Millenia have taught him a different definition of patience. He is not certain if he was a patient man before, and he certainly doesn't consider himself one now - if only because he doesn't consider himself a man anymore. But semantics are not the argument at hand, nor is Jacob's perverted versions of justice.

He has, as he has had for decades, centuries, variables afloat. He doesn't assign them silly figures, as his brother does; his variables are people, and they are worthy of more than abstraction and leaps of faith. The man in black understands his variables, people that they are, and unlike his brother he doesn't judge them for their faults. Monsters do not evaluate other's sins, at least, not as anything other than reflections of their own nature.

The son who killed his mother can get some use yet out of the mother who killed her son.

The priest would kill for his brother. If the Monster had eyes, it would close them now, to keep in it's feelings. If he had a mouth he would sigh.

But his brother has stolen these things from him. He can only possess them by stealing. The fake priest knows much of stealing as well. His brother has taught him what stealing is, what killing is, as well. The Monster remembers a simpler life, a barefoot life on a beach, and wonders why his brother could not find faith in his heart as Eko's could. He would breathe heavier, he would frown, had he the humanity left that such required.

He chitters a peculiar mechanical sound at Eko, and departs.

"And with it, I did my best."

He will not be the only brother to be judged and found unworthy.

If the priest cannot be used, cannot be stirred and dragged into his plans by blame, he will not be abided. He understands this man only too well, his own faults and pain met him in those brown eyes, and if he cannot have freedom and forgiveness, then these are not things this man deserves either.

The envy in his voice tastes like contempt, he narrows his eyes. "You speak to me as if I were your brother."

The bullet in his back hurt like nothing had, not in the last couple thousand years. The fall hurt more.

There was the sound of something cracking, and he couldn't feel his legs - a coincidence too wrong and right at the same time to consider.

He died with a body, with his humanity. With what he'd wanted for so long he'd forgotten why he'd wanted it returned. The irony hurt, but not so bad as everything else did. As imprisonment his whole life had, as his mother's and Jacob's subsequent betrayals had, as years of anger as his only companion had.

The cliff shook underneath him, and then nothing hurt ever again.

I CRIED SEVEN TIMES. My cable went out twice.

I'm sorry I keep posting with irrelevant things, everyone. I am tired. Life is confusing me. I want to leave home and become my own person. I am not a pillar of black smoke, but I would be willing to become one if it would let me leave my home.

I don't know. Perhaps I will have more fascinating and less utterly incomprehensible things in the morrow. Or perhaps I will just be hungover, and muttering. The latter is the most likely but we can all hope.

Oh my god I am being productive. ._. Working till 5am on projects for school, finishing pictures I started. Wow.

It feels so good guys, lemme tell you. So good. It's not like I wasn't trying to be productive before this, but you fall into slumps where nothing is working right and you don't want to work right, and nothing just ends up getting done in a way that makes one proud. But I am doing pretty okay right now, except for other people, whose problems I am attempting to just stay above. These aren't people who are there for me with my problems, just people who live to drag others down with theirs, so!

I have some more art, you guys are gonna get sick of it after a while I'm sure, but I keep writing up other entries and discarding them lately so these kinds are pretty much the only ones making it past my "lol no one will care" filter.

I've been working on a series of character designs for a steampunk fantasy idea of Jeff's - heavy on the fantasy. I think at it's current stage it's more sci-fi/fantasy with steampunk design elements and some technology. My ideas are more guidelines to work off than strict designs, since they turned out too detailed to really be useable to do comics off of, and tbh, I'm pretty sure that any artist he could find for it would be ah. Well. I know my other friends who draw, and I highly doubt any of them would stoop to using designs based off mine, regardless of whether or not the writer likes them. :')

Which is why I'm mostly just doing them for fun. It's fun to work off someone else's idea of a character, and to see how their character changes once they get someone else's input into it. So uh, here's the first of the set and the only finished one thus far.

I wanted to go with typical faded dark looking clothes for her. What people think of as steampunk. But all it did was make her look older and dour, and she's the ray of sunshine in the cast.

I've been working on this one for a bit now but the CG version is the one I actually intend to be presentable so that one's not finished yet - I don't think the pencil version adequately distracts from how much the lines are wrong in every way. This one's just for practicing purposes, but it actually didn't turn out bad so I scanned it anyways.

And Fiesta starts tomorrow apparently? Considering dragging a group of people down to King William Fair on next saturday if I have the time. And can wake anyone I know up before noon on a saturday. "Anyone I know" including me.

Oh boo, Grammys. I'd be less disappointed if not for Beyonce and Gaga putting on fucking incredible shows, singing, dancing, and being both great vocalists and performers... and Taylor standing there strumming at her guitar offkey like a high schooler who deserves second place at the talent show. Even if you ignore the success of The Fame, from the perspective of someone watching the whole show, it just comes off as comical to see the worst performance of the night in every way take the biggest award home.

And something I've been working on for a bit now, and am happy to have finished to show off.

I don't know if anyone following this really cares about my art, but I've been kind of forgetting what it feels like to be good at something lately, so posting it here (even if it's just a nuisance) is important to me. By which I mean, you don't have to (oh god please don't actually, that would make me feel more self-conscious) reassure me that I'm not irritating. It's my journal and I believe in posting what I want to, but I just wanted to preface this with why I want to post this.

Billy Zane is the only Ansem ever. I accept no other. I forgot why this was the case - surely, I thought, I am misremembering because Xemnas is so much smarter and less crazy! I thought, Billy Zane is only amusing because he makes crazy sound so hot! You see, in the last 8 years I forgot why he is one of few voice actors that I accept no replacements for - because no other Ansem (or his nobody or otherwise VA or whatever) makes me simultaneously creeped the fuck out and wanting to hump my screen.

I had to pause because I was choking on a cookie at "teehee TINY PLACE."

OH RIKU, ONLY YOUR VOICE STOPS ME FROM FALLING INTO THE PHOTOSHOP-RENDERED-CLOUDS AS I GAZE UPON THE HORROR OF THE DICKSHIP.

And, the final commentary that acts as proof that I am getting dumber as I age: at 15, sober, playing this game in the living room with my sister in the kitchen (only notable in that she never understood my reaction), I sobbed at the ending, surprised at the unusually bittersweet ending to a family-friendly jrpg that came utterly unsuspected. At 23, playing the game coming off a buzz in my room at 6am, I contemplated the merits of sitting on the controller as Ansem was defeated. =|

I mean, I’m just saying. I genuinely think I have proof that I am regressing now, as opposed to merely considering the possibility.

I greeted the new year sticky and hungover, like a boss.

No, no don't get all concerned, I'm still throwing my money at your stupid games. Even the ones whose plots and character designs still look really dumb to me.

This talk is about something else. It's about, well, Cid, of all things! Yes, one of your old, simple, and often overlooked staples. About something that shouldn't make people concerned at all. But here we are, I suppose, so I'll continue. Cids are great. They occupy a special place in my heart, though to be fair I don't think the Oglop or Robin Williams look-alike Cids are invited there. But I've forgiven you guys for those two, because on a whole, Cids are great.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't about you guys innovating your Cids. XII had two Cids. We've had a variety of Cids over the years, and the difference between them make them fun. No one is going to assume that VI and VII Cid are the same guy, in any way! But you see, there's innovation and then theres, ahem, this. Squeenix, there are acceptable limits to this. We both know this.

This? This, Squeenix, is not a Cid. I shouldn't have to tell you guys this, but apparently you've taken it that far, and now I must.

Just give him some charming other name and we can both be happy and on our way. And I can stop this dirty feeling every time I look at him and catch myself wanting to lick my screen.

I've been doing a lot of manga colouring lately for icons on hanzaisha, and because I don't usually clean up the scan completely or remove the shit I don't intend to icon or crop it where I get bored and stop shading, I don't really feel like posting them on there. Besides the fact that I'm not really sure what most people would get out of a single panel or two when they came for icons.

But since I have a firm stand on "my journal is for whatever I want to put here," I present to you them. In case anyone's interested, and so I can feel like they're not just taking up space on my harddrive. I feel weird about them because they're not really art, nor are they really graphics, but I guess there's a little of the two in them.

And uh, ones that I haven't put out an icon for yet are here too.

There are blotchy spots where I gave up and quit, shit that I just cropped out on the icon, weird colours to compensate for my layers. All in all, why I never actually want to post these. But I do kind of like them all the same. >>

I can't figure out if I'm getting more comfortable with the idea of blending the hard and soft edged brushes, or if I'm simply losing sight of what digital painting should look like and developing bad habits.

I keep thinking to myself that I can't possibly be playing Prototype. This must be some game I dreamed up, because it can't honestly exist.

It's not to say that it's perfect. It's very, very, very not perfect. It has a lot of flaws. The controls, the story, etc. But on some other level, it's some weird mix of things that really shouldn't be possible to make into a game, all of which I desperately want in every game I ever play.

Hell. The main character is a sociopath who eats people. That's not a spoiler. That's... that's the opening. That's the game's concept. It only gets worse from there.

(No I seriously never mention inFamous during this, but I do like Prototype, so if you intend on forcing the comparison, don't bother)

You're a narcissistic, petty mad scientist who in a fit of pique ran with his virus creation and unleashed it as he was killed. In any other game, Alex Mercer (the real or fake one) would be a villain. You hear yourself, in a flashback, give the usual villain rant of not being paid to feel, and really, it goes beyond that. From the pieces of you see of yourself in the flashbacks, Mercer wasn't just unconcerned with the possible implications of his handiwork - he was fucking proud of them. The guy cared more about how awesome his virus was than he did about probably any person in the world except himself.

And here where it's even better, at least, to me - you're not even that monster, you just think you are. You're actually the virus creation. You only think you're Mercer, and in fact you're actually somewhat more human than him. The only real human connection that seemed to matter to the real Mercer was his sister, who he knew full well would be affected if he let loose the Blacklight - and he still did - because to the real Mercer, revenge was more important than Dana. The fake one, (as pathetically still horrible as it is) at least seems to consider them of fairly similar priorities.

Jeff has very real problems with the fact that you are seemingly expected to find sympathy for Alex in your heart somehow despite him being worth absolutely none. In another game, you'd be cheering to see this crazy fucker get his just deserts, but Prototype wants you to pity him. I can't figure out if I think that's a failing of the game, or one of it's greatest strengths - some games try really really hard to offer you the possibility of a villain protagonist, but few really deliver on it without then proceeding to lecture you about the moral implications. I'm pretty sure that villains don't have to deal with that shit, so why should the player of a villain protagonist? Fable spends a goddamn 30 minutes lecturing you on the importance of your choices - Prototype, on the other hand, really could care less how you play Mercer. Since your only options are Completely Inhuman Monster and Completely Inhuman Monster with a Tiny Shred of Possible Humanity That He Only Aquired Through Devouring Enough People... I can see why those choices are somewhat unimportant. In the end, it's almost JRPG-like in how little control you have over who Alex is... and I don't have a huge problem with that. My opinion on every sandbox game ever has just been ignored as a result, but really, I don't need to be able to have some stupid morality bar showing me how evil what I'm playing is. I'm a big girl. If I want to play evil, I'm going to do it whether or not I get a little red halo.

It feels a lot of times like the entire premise of Prototype is that you're playing what would be a villain in another game (which is honestly what I have been asking video game makers to make more of for years, pretty please with sugar on top). And to balance that, rather than give you any real heroes to fight, you simply have a game full of villains. Every time you think that you've seen the worst any of these characters are capable of, another web of intrigue flashback smacks the player and points out that no, really, no one in this game except Dana and possibly Ragland is worth any of the audience's sympathy or justification. I really enjoy playing a game that doesn't pull the blows of the story it's trying to tell, but Prototype seems founded on the idea of taking a moment of showing how horrible the characters are, then dragging it out until it loses all meaning. Then repeating it with something that can shock the now jaded audience, and lather, rinse, repeat until all of Manhattan is dead.

And compared to every other villain protagonist I've ever played in a game ever, it feels so much more natural. I don't feel like there's any melodramatic emphasis on morality - the protagonist obviously has issues with morality or they wouldn't allow you to play them this way. Why can't more games remember that, and instead, let the player's own conscience question them, rather than the game's ugly fake one? Trust me, any audience with a brain will be able to figure out that they're doing reprehensible things. Having the game hammer it in, time and time again, feels unnatural and hamhanded, and gets in the way of actually playing a villain.

And I'm not really sure how to reconcile this, but I think it mainly comes down to that I don't expect to really totally feel what my video game protagonists feel. I always hear that statement ("I love FFVIII because I really understood Squall!" "I hate FFXII because Ashe is a bitch and I couldn't agree with her!" "I like Fable because you can be your own character!") and shake my head in confusion because while video games' nature of putting you in the driver's seat does mean it's way harder to continue doing things you don't agree with, I don't need to be totally 100% there for every action, or I'd just write myself a goddamn novel doing that. I want to experience a story, and stories I love don't have to go where I want them to. I do expect internal consistency, I expect for them to be interesting people, and I want to be entertained by what they do. But I don't feel a need to be able to rationalize anything a video game character does by my own moral compass - just by theirs. But I think unless you also feel that way, Prototype is a completely unplayable game even for blowing off steam, because while the catharsis factor is very much a central point of your abilities, you don't get very far just by being a random cock and ignoring the missions. And the missions really do hammer in that you're not a good guy by any reasonable stretch of that word.

So I guess what I'm saying is, I finally get the game that lets me play as the horrible evil monster. As a vengeful mad scientist and as a totally awful dick who ends up responsible for millions of deaths. And then it lets me be in my favourite city in the world, and it lets me fly, and throw cars, and run up buildings and... you know I could really care less for all the failings. The choppy storyline, the overcompensating controls, the cardboardy facial expressions... you get to eat people and fly around Manhattan are you kidding me? I have dreams like that.

I'm not done with the game yet - just at the fight with Elizabeth Greene, who takes so abominably long to kill that I'm somewhat waiting before I try again. Spending 50 minutes trying and failing to kill a boss has never been my idea of a good time, and has a lot to do with why I will never replay FFVIII. And I asked it on twitter but I really do need to share here - where do the Hunters incubating in the water towers come from? Is Elizabeth out there fucking the water towers? Inquiring minds need to know this sort of shit. I'm not judging.

You know, completely unrelated to Prototype, every time I see this magazine page about Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep I get kind of happy. It's just this sort of weird joy, and it's because every part of that page is some odd kind of amazing.

This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US department of energy.

I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility.

After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the national weather service of the national oceanographic and atmospheric administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the national aeronautics and space administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of US department of agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the food and drug administration.

At the appropriate time as regulated by the US congress and kept accurate by the national institute of standards and technology and the US naval observatory, I get into my national highway traffic safety administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads built by the local, state, and federal departments of transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the environmental protection agency, using legal tender issued by the federal reserve bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the US postal service and drop the kids off at the public school.

Then, after spending the day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the department of labor and the occupational safety and health administration, I drive back to my house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and the fire marshall's inspection, and which has not been plundered of all its valuables thanks to the local police department.

I then log onto the internet which was developed by the defense advanced research projects administration and post on freerepublic and fox news forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right.

I'm sure a lot of you have read that already but good copypasta deserves a repost or too. Or maybe this says it pretty good too.

I don't know what's the matter with me most days. I'm pretty sure I've stopped trying. Trying at what? Well, everything that really matters. I feel like once I find happiness, equilibrium will follow, or once I find equilibrium, happiness will follow... but all I've found lately is that I'm a pretty stupid, lazy person when I stop caring about anything.

There's a very large, stupid siamese on my lap and he's drooling on me a bit. Trying to play keepaway with my booze from his face isn't very fun. I'd like to try more intoxicated gaming, but my options without a ps2 are fairly limited.

I have finally moved out of 2006 and taken the step into the unknown, the scary, and the slightly less flexible (insert flexisquares pun here) than I would prefer to work with - s2. Behold, I have finally made a real, working, personal journal layout in it! One that I'm even willing to use myself. In honor of such an esteemed occasion I even decided to put some real effort into trying something new with the entry layout. I've got userpics on the left! A subject/date combination I've never worn smooth and that I didn't even copy from more creative people!

And you don't even want to know what it took to make it work in internet explorer even as poorly as it does. Let me assure you it was nothing less than a blood sacrifice. If you are the sort who looks at other's code, I implore you not to think less of me, but rather of IE, if you see the silly nonsense gibberish classes that I've put in there. Believe it or not, those are actually recognized by IE. I know those aren't real css, I swear, but writing things IE will accept is a bit like talking to a senile, horribly out of the loop person who will not refer to things with their correct names - you eventually start calling things the silly gibberish terms they're using because it's just easier to be understood with gibberish.

Line for contemplating my blatant shallowness in making a layout for a game not even yet out begins in the comments.
