There’s been a lot of discussion recently about Model Context Protocols, commonly referred to as MCPs.
The concept was introduced by Anthropic to standardize how AI systems interact with external tools, datasets, and software environments.
At its core, MCP is trying to solve a fundamental problem.
Large language models are powerful, but they don’t naturally live inside the systems where real work happens. The data that actually matters to operators and investors sits across spreadsheets, research platforms, procurement databases, contract records, program budgets, and internal knowledge bases.
AI models are only as useful as the context they can access.
Historically, protocols have been some of the most important infrastructure layers in technology.
HTTP standardized how computers communicate across the internet.
APIs standardized how software systems interact with one another.
MCPs attempt to do the same for AI interacting with tools and data.
But the protocol itself isn’t the interesting part. Protocols rarely are.
What matters is what gets built on top of them.
And in sectors like defense and national security investing, that becomes particularly relevant.
Diligence in the federal market is extremely data-intensive. Understanding whether a company has real traction often requires pulling signals from many sources:
• Program budgets
• Procurement histories
• Contract vehicles
• SBIR awards
• Agency priorities
Most of this information exists. But it’s scattered across systems that were never designed to work together.
As a result, a lot of defense tech diligence still relies on manual research, expert networks, and fragmented tooling.
If AI systems can reliably access structured datasets, proprietary research, and analytical tools through standardized interfaces, you unlock a very different workflow.
Instead of static reports, imagine dynamic research environments.
Instead of one-off analysis, imagine continuous signal generation.
The protocol itself isn’t the value. The value is the tools and infrastructure built on top of it.
And in markets where information asymmetry drives outcomes, like defense and national security, better diligence infrastructure could meaningfully change how capital gets allocated.
The next wave of AI in this space likely won’t be about chatbots.
It will be about systems that help investors and operators understand complex markets faster and with greater clarity.
