CAPM certification requirements are very lenient. You can apply for this credential without any project management experience.
To be eligible for the CAPM exam, you must meet the following criteria:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED or global equivalent)
- Project Management Education: You must complete at least 23 hours of project management education before taking the exam.
How to Get 23 Contact Hours of Training
You can earn 23 contact hours through offline, online, live, or live virtual training. The training providers can be PMI-authorized or non-authorized.

CAPM Certification Cost
The total cost of obtaining CAPM certification includes the exam fee, study materials, and associated training costs.
1. Exam Fee
- PMI Members: 225 USD
- Non-Members: 300 USD
Becoming a PMI member has additional benefits, including exam discounts and access to various resources (e.g., the PMBOK Guide, Agile Guide, and other PMI standards).
2. Study Materials
- The PMBOK Guide is essential for exam preparation. It costs around 60-100 USD, but PMI members can download it for free.
- Additional study guides, practice exams, and online courses cost between 50 and 500 USD, depending on their depth and provider.
3. Training Costs
- While not mandatory, many candidates choose to attend CAPM preparation courses, which can cost anywhere from 200 to 2000 USD, depending on the format (e.g., online or in-person) and provider.

How to Get CAPM Certification
To earn CAPM certification, you must pass a computerized test. The duration is 3 hours, and you must answer 150 multiple-choice questions. The test does not penalize wrong answers.
Once you pass the test, you can add the CAPM title to your name and signature. This certification is valid for three years. To renew it, you must complete the CAPM CCR Cycle, i.e., earn 15 PDUs in three years and report to PMI. This will extend your CAPM credential for the next three years.
You can take the CAPM test from home or at a Pearson VUE center.

The CAPM exam eligibility period is one year after PMI approves your application. You have three attempts to pass the exam. If you don’t pass the exam in these attempts, you cannot apply again for one year.
