Pet deaths prompt recall of pet food

WASHINGTON - A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site — http://www.menufoods.com/recall — early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.

Menu Foods' three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

"To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product," Henderson said.

The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.

Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada.

Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million.

Still having image issues

I still can't see certain images. I d/led Firefox and I upgraded to Explorer 7 but I still can't see them. I just figured out something though...I think all the images I can't see have the word banner in their file name. My FO banner that I'm using now had the name elizabanner but when I changed it to 5million it immediately showed up.

On the newest voting at angel_stillness I can't see #1 & 2 entries. I wonder if those have the word banner in their file name? Actually now that I think of it, there have been two entries in every challenge voting at angel_stillness that I haven't been able to see since this problem started.

Lulu, if you see this post, can you check and let me know what the file names are for #1 & 2 of this weeks voting, please? I won't vote this week.

What the? Help!

I don't get it. My SMG colorbar disappeared on my info page. I have all my stuff uploaded to my photobucket account and that's the only one that's gone. I renamed it and uploaded it again and it's still not showing up. I just added a friends only banner to my info page and it's not showing up either. I typed it all in correctly so what the fuck?!?

Edit: I got the SMG colorbar to work. I had to open a new file in PS and copy/paste it in there. Now it works. I did that with the FO banner but it's still not working. It's giving me an error on photobucket...but why?!?

Testing...(do you see a Eliza FO banner below? I don't! I don't see anything, not even a red x.)

Could there be something wrong with my computer? I stopped saving it as elizafobanner.png and saved it as 5million.png and now it finally shows up on photobucket and I can see it here. So what's the deal?!

My new header on a diff monitor

Whoa! I'm at work right now and my new header looks so dark and not as good as it does on my monitor at home. :( Okay....so is my monitor at work too dark or is my monitor at home too light??

Weather - We are suppose to get 1 to 3 inches today then another 3 to 6 inches tomorrow. I really don't mind as long as the roads get cleared quickly because there's alot of idiot drivers around here.

Grammys - I only watched the beginning to see The Police. I'm kinda bummed I missed The Red Hot Chili Peppers though. I did catch some of the red carpet on E! and saw Alyson Hannigan. She looked so good! Pretty dress, glowing skin, killer legs...so different from her Willow days.

I got my new computer, I got my new computer and it's a DELL!
It's all shiny silvery and the keyboard is so tiny!
Also (the important stuff), it's way faster and has a much better video card.

First, I had some errors installing my SBC Yahoo! DSL programs. I'm on it now but it's being very tempremental. I'll have to call them and see what we can do about that.

Second, I installed PS CS. (of course!) Now I have a ton-o-files to transfer...like all my icons, caps, textures, etc. I'm hoping I'll be able to make an icon or two this weekend for houseof_worship and girl_crush.

and now...watching Grey's and taping Supernatural...

Puter Problems

I've been backdoored twice by three trojans!!!

HUH?!

On Sunday I thought I was losing my computer because it started giving me a bunch of error messages, restarting itself and taking forever to recover. I spent all day burning files, the first ones of course were PS CS and all my icon stuff. Then yesterday I was searching microsoft.com for some info and found Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool. It found the two backdoors and three trojans on my computer, not Nortons. Stupid POS Nortons!

So I recommend using the Removal Tool because I don't know how you would feel if you got backdoored by a bunch of trojans. *G*

NEW LAYOUT

Current header made for me by organza (Thank you so much, I completely LOVE it!)
Background is one of peoplemachines textures.
Default icon made by me. :) I've been using curves & selective colors and liking it.

I'm glad I got motivated again to make some icons. It might not last long though because I start school on 8/24. Composition II, Tues&Thurs 6:30-8pm & Technical Report Writing, Friday 6-8pm. I'll stay late at work those days to get overtime and because school is only 10min. away from work. Exciting stuff!

The Michigan Renaissance Festival is Saturday. I've been counting down from last year. I love that place!

I need it to be Friday (payday). My spending envelopes are empty, so I'm broke and brown bagging it til then. I don't cook so it's roast beef sandwiches, baby carrots & fruit every day for lunch. -My personality & style.
I can be really silly sometimes and I know how to dress my body to flatter it.

-My thick hair and my three tattoos if they’re not covered up by my clothes.

3. What do you always have with you while out in public? (for example, earrings, purse, wallet, watch, etc.)
-purse (wallet, chap stick, rice paper, gum, cell phone, sunglasses, Biofreeze pain relieving gel, super shine hair crème, Excedrin tension headache, etc.) Yes, I have a huge purse!

-jewelry (watch, bracelet, rings, earrings, necklace, sometimes an anklet) I love the jewelry!

4. Is there anything about your body that you think isn't normal?
-My Myofascial Pain Syndrome. When it hurts it holds me back from doing the things I want & need to do.

-I have a lot of moles. I don’t tan anymore because I’m afraid of getting skin cancer so now I’m rather pale.

5. What are you complimented on (looks, smarts, anything) the most? Why do you think that's the case?
-My hair, because it’s thick and everyone that doesn’t have thick hair wants it. If they only knew that it takes me 30 minutes to dry & style it in the morning. :\

-That I’m friendly and helpful. I always hold doors open for people and if someone asks me for help I’m more than willing to, within reason.

-The way I dress. I watch What Not to Wear all the time. ;)

Today is the first day for Fall 2006 registration. It started at 6am. I got up at 6am to get online and register. It kept telling me SERVICE UNAVAILABLE. So then I tried the phone. Busy, busy, busy! Finally at 9am I was able to get through online, I picked me classes and then it told me I couldn't register online because I haven't taken a class in 2 years. WTF?! So now I have to leave work early and go to the campus and register there. BIG pain in the butt-ocks!

I'm taking a Technical Report Writing class to help me with my job now. My boss is very happy that I'm taking it. Yeah me! I'm also taking Composition II. I think I've decided that I'm going to Oakland University for a Bachelor's in Business Administration. I still need to talk to a counselor though cuz it's confusing.

So, in 2 hours I'm leaving work to go stand in line to register. :\
