Are you a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polishedman.com\/playerdevelopmentproject\">polished man<\/a>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the last 18 months I&#8217;ve written (and talked &#8211; probably too much) about the influence of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/who-we-are-is-how-we-play\/\">Social norms<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/updated-key-characteristics-of-the-worlds-best-coaches-2-0\/\">Cultural assumptions<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/the-price-of-creativity-2\/\">Expectations<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/the-price-of-creativity-2\/\">Values<\/a><\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/fc-barcelona-dismantling-the-language-of-war\/\">language we use<\/a><\/li><li>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/leicester-city-football-revolution\/\">Dominant narratives <\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially in relation to motivation, creativity, our <a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/key-characteristics-of-the-worlds-best-coaches\/\">coaching<\/a> and player development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At times I&#8217;ve&nbsp;called the issues above&nbsp;<strong>socio-cultural constraints<\/strong> because they shape the <strong>environments<\/strong> (the ecology of social systems) that we coach in, and over time they&nbsp;mould our:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Identities as people and coaches<\/li><li>Expectations<\/li><li>Behaviours<\/li><li>Societal definitions of success.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, one socio-cultural constraint has gone without mention. It has been sitting in&nbsp;my blind spot and it&#8217;s perhaps the most dominant, the most deadly and the most destructive to our coaching and to people&#8217;s lives around the world:&nbsp;<strong>Masculinity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may think I&#8217;m over-reacting, but watching the documentary <strong>&#8216;The Mask You Live In&#8217;<\/strong>&nbsp;was like seeing someone join all the dots and link many socio-cultural constraints to an issue that&#8217;s embedded in everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take <strong>three minutes<\/strong> to watch this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hc45-ptHMxo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Note that in the documentary they refer to American masculinity specifically because this is the&nbsp;context of the documentary)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masculinity may be the most tangible example of a damaging socio-cultural constraint, because it shapes all environments and all of the relationships we have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/masterclass-discussions-developing-forward-thinking-players\/\">video discussion<\/a>\u00a0MK Dons Head of Academy Coaching Edu Rubio highlighted <strong>empathy<\/strong> as the key attribute he looks for in coaches. In the documentary &#8216;The Mask You Live In&#8217; they\u00a0explain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The reason men are <strong>less likely<\/strong> to show <strong>empathy<\/strong>, less likely to show <strong>vulnerability<\/strong>, less likely to bring up children in that kind of way is that they&#8217;ve been socialised into this idea of masculinity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Terry Kupers continues by saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a dominance hierarchy. There are tough guys who are on the top, and there are the weaklings, (often called) the &#8216;girls&#8217;, who are on the bottom of the heap. Now this is the origin of sexism and homophobia.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is so much to say on this one quote, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. The documentary goes to on to highlight so many issues and experiences that resonate with me personally and effect men, women and children &#8211; it&#8217;s a must watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a&nbsp;coaching perspective, masculinity may be the most dominant socio-cultural constraint on the learning environments created for boys and girls. Choking compassion, eliminating empathy and killing creativity, masculinity is&nbsp;a controlling construct based,&nbsp;according to&nbsp;Joe Ehrmann,&nbsp;on three lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joe Ehrmann&nbsp;is a coach, former NFL player and author of<em> InsideOut Coaching: How Sport Can Transforms Lives<\/em>. In the documentary Joe highlights three lies every boy learns about&nbsp;masculinity&nbsp;in America. &nbsp;<em><strong>My thoughts are in italics.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joe says&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1: The first lie every boy learns in America is that we associate masculinity with athletic ability &#8211; size, strength or some type of skill set. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boys that show what society judges as &#8216;ability&#8217; or &#8216;talent&#8217; are set up for tremendous failure and frustration in life, because being a man doesn&#8217;t have a single thing to do with athletic ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This also causes athletic ability to monopolise young people&#8217;s lives, something that happens to many young athletes including&nbsp;me (my story is described in this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/misguided-praise-junkies\/\">article<\/a>: Misguided Praise Junkies).&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2: The second lie every boy learns is that we associate masculinity with economic success. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joe says: &#8220;It has been said that comparison is the thief of all happiness, so if you&#8217;re building &nbsp;your sense of masculinity based on power and possessions there&#8217;s always going to be someone that has more! That leads to an incredible empty life of striving for things at the expense of what&#8217;s truly important in life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Whether it&#8217;s the <a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/the-fifa-saga-coaching-corrupted\/\">corruption of FIFA<\/a>&nbsp;or the dominant narrative of &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/leicester-city-football-revolution\/\">success is&nbsp;money and money breeds success<\/a>&#8216;&nbsp;this story&nbsp;runs deep in socially constructed ideas of American masculinity.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Madeline Levine gives the example of an eight-year-old boy saying &#8216;when I grow up I want to be a venture capitalist&#8217;. Dr Levine says: &#8220;There are so many things wrong with that, that I hardly know where to start. The extent to which <strong>he comes in and has already been programmed, he is going to have very limited options in his life<\/strong>. And they will never feel authentically his own.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>These controlling&nbsp;influences&nbsp;make people conform to societal norms and&nbsp;behave in controlling ways. Creating a controlling motivational climate that may limit&nbsp;basic psychological need support erode&nbsp;motivation&nbsp;and inhibit creativity.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3: The third lie is that in this culture we&nbsp;associate sexual conquest with masculinity. Associating &nbsp;that with masculinity is so dehumanising.&nbsp;Those ideas are designed to keep boys silent to keep them conforming to the construct.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m sure we are all aware of the scandals in American Universities with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-stanford-rape-case-documents-release-20160610-snap-htmlstory.html\">Stanford Swimmer Case<\/a>&nbsp;being a glaring example; however, again this may only be the tip of the iceberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a mother&#8217;s perspective on the difficulties associated with masculinity and the blind spots it creates in young men,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/parenting\/wp\/2016\/09\/14\/its-not-enough-to-teach-our-teen-sons-about-consent\/\">check out this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently this&nbsp;Public Service Announcement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gOk_qxkBphY\">&#8216;Dear Daddy<\/a>&#8216; from Care Norway, the Norwegian branch of charity Care International, went&nbsp;viral in Scandinavia. After watching this it became pretty clear that I&#8217;d been in sporting environments that had reinforced sexism and I&#8217;d laughed along while the jokes where made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was a pretty painful realisation and even though I&#8217;d stopped laughing at the jokes by the time my next training camp came around I didn&#8217;t call out the culprits or attempt to change things. Perhaps I felt isolated, like I would be the only one protesting and I&#8217;d be rocking the boat at a crucial time (World Cup preparations). I regret this now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving forward I&#8217;d like to&nbsp;start&nbsp;making up for this missed opportunity. This is one of the many reasons the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polishedman.com\/playerdevelopmentproject\"><strong>PDP team<\/strong><\/a> is&nbsp;signing up for the&nbsp;the&nbsp;<span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polishedman.com\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=PREVPM_002&amp;utm_content=PREVPM_002%20CID_ff6aff72ca559277718efa298dcd8759&amp;utm_source=Campaign%20Monitor\">Polished Man campaign 2016<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The campaign raises awareness and funds to support the 1 in 5 children who suffer physical and\/or sexual violence before the age of 18.&nbsp;Why the focus on Men? Because 90% of all sexual violence against children is perpetrated by men, but the Polished Man movement is not about pointing the finger. It\u2019s about empowerment.&nbsp;It\u2019s about asking men to unite and lead by example, channelling the collective strength of masculinity to protect society\u2019s most vulnerable citizens and our future leaders.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IG-profile-copy-2-740x600.gif\" alt=\"ig-profile-copy-2\" class=\"wp-image-6098\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According <strong>The Mask You Live In<\/strong> suicide is the third leading cause of death in boys. Dr Niobe Way says that the dramatic rise in suicide happens &#8220;exactly at the age that we begin to hear the emotional language disappear from boys&#8217; narratives, in the national data that exactly the age that boys begin to have five times the suicide rate compared with girls.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He wears a mask, and his face grows to fit it&#8230;&#8221; George Orwell<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the documentary&nbsp;a story is retold in which a young boy is asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What if your coach told you, you were playing like a girl in front of all the rest of the players? That boy told me that it would destroy him. If it would destroy him to be told he&#8217;s playing like a girl, what are we teaching this boys about girls?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I&#8217;ll leave the final word with&nbsp;Joe Ehrmann:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>&#8220;Coaches in this country have so much power. Such a position in the lives of young people that they do attain this father-like status.
