And that requires a psychologically safe environment, where they feel like they won\u2019t be criticised if they try something and make a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want children to be themselves,\u201d adds Lee Hodge, Head of Academy Coaching at Plymouth Argyle FC. \u201cMaybe they\u2019ve spent all day at school and had to mask some of themselves. But, in our environments, we want them to feel safe to express their true selves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"building-trust-with-players\">Building Trust with Players<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Hodge, forming positive relationships is fundamental to helping players feel safe in our environments: \u201cBuilding trust is key,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd for that to happen, <a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/a-guide-to-communicating-with-children\/\">we need to connect with the children we coach<\/a> \u2014 to learn as much about them as possible in order to understand them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStart by asking questions at training \u2014 things like how their day has been and what they\u2019ve been up to. Then, when you have informal reviews, you can delve deeper \u2014 for instance, by asking how many siblings they have, or who they look up to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cObservational skills are vital too; they help you get a feel for the type of day a child\u2019s had, or what kind of mood they\u2019re in. It\u2019s all about gathering information and showing our players that we care about them as people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"balancing-psychological-safety-and-performance\">Balancing Psychological Safety and Performance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The right balance between giving our players psychological safety and preparing them for competitive environments can be hard to strike. But, whatever level we\u2019re coaching at, it\u2019s crucial that our environment achieves both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a continuum between safe environments and competitive challenges,\u201d says Hodge. \u201cAs coaches, we\u2019re constantly moving across it. Again, it comes down to observational skills and knowing our players \u2014 knowing what the individuals in our group need at that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn academy football, for example, we promote that desire to win, but it\u2019s winning <em>our way<\/em>; it\u2019s developmental, and we still allow players to be creative. It isn\u2019t \u2018win at all costs\u2019. On gameday, even though it\u2019s competitive, kids feel like they can just go and play \u2014 they\u2019re not playing within themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must be skillful in including consequence in an age-appropriate way,\u201d agrees Cooke. \u201cFor example, if a 10-year-old makes a mistake on gameday and we concede a goal, our reaction on the sidelines should be very different to that if we were coaching adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to teach kids about the realities of the game. But the age and stage of our players must be central to how we do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"taking-an-individual-approach\">Taking an Individual Approach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the best ways to help our players feel safe and valued \u2014 while also supporting their overall development \u2014 is to <a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/the-player-centred-approach\/\">individualise our coaching<\/a>. This means identifying the needs and wants of each of our players and then letting this knowledge inform our coaching decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStart by asking kids what they love about the game,\u201d says Hodge. \u201cDiscover what they enjoy most about training, and what they think they\u2019re good at. From there, you can offer a little advice on what they could improve \u2014 on what could help them get to where they want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat strength-based approach is critical,\u201d agrees Dave Wright, Co-Founder at PDP. \u201cAs coaches, we want kids to be attuned to their own strengths. In truth, we probably need <a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/online-soccer-coaching-courses\/\">more coach education<\/a> around the individual approach to player development; we need a greater appreciation of the difference between <em>player development<\/em> and simply getting a team to play well and win games.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"remembering-the-fun-factor\">Remembering the Fun Factor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, we must remember to create environments <a href=\"https:\/\/playerdevelopmentproject.com\/let-them-play\/\">where our players can enjoy participating<\/a>. \u201cThis goes back to the point about kids being able to turn up and express themselves,\u201d says Wright. \u201cBringing some fun and humour into our coaching environments is so important. Whether it\u2019s under-8s or senior football, there needs to be that enjoyment factor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crucially, Hodge notes, the manner in which we deliver our sessions is arguably more important than the games or activities we plan: \u201cEnergy is so important,\u201d he explains. \u201cEvery coaching session is a performance; we\u2019re there to entertain the kids \u2014 to engage, enthuse, and inspire them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want children to just enjoy the game for what it is,\u201d he concludes. \u201cUltimately, that\u2019s why we coach.
