I'm not dead. Just been without Internet for the most part for a good 2 weeks or so. Bleh. UPS is majorly lame [they were supposed to deliver my DSL equipment a looooong time ago].

Ballroom was good. First class today. The new shoes with higher heels have improved my dancing immensely, ironically enough. Also first day of classes today. Crazy, but pretty damn great. I'm excited muchly about my Astro, Japanese, and Hindu Mythology. The rest, not so much. But meh.

I'm looking for another job currently. i feel like I should keep very busy this semester, so you'll probably see less of me prowling around online. I might icon every once in a while, but I really need to focus on my marketing job [for which I actually get paid, sorry guys]. So this is a goodbye [for now] until my semester really gets settled in so I can kick back and not study.

A fairly small offering considering me, but it's all I've got now. The ones toward the bottom are prettier because they were made with my demo of PSCS3 [which is amazing, by the way] and that in itself qualifies them to be better. mostly I just wanted to play with Curves and since manga images don't lend themselves to that purpose as readily... we have real life.

It certainly has been a while. I guess I got caught up in ballroom, classes, and work. And then came that month-long trip to China that was both lovely and painful in its no-internet-accessing ways.

*sigh* My grandmother. What to do with that tragically humorous woman... She sometimes seems like someone out of a Marquez book.

I have no excuse now. I only have a very silly computer class [business major requirement... *cough*] and then... well, ballroom at some point, I guess. [intro lesson tomorrow, finally ^_^;; I still have to see if they teach paso doble there. Huzzah!]

Tried to get a job, but since I'm only in town for the summer, no one will hire me to work for a little over a month. No surprise. [The China trip killed my chances]. So I'm mostly loafing around the house. Never coming home for summer EVER AGAIN. It is literally 30 DEGREES COOLER IN BERKELEY!

And there's a fairly thorough public transportation system there that is free rather than my mother feeling like she is being persecuted because I still can't/won't drive [not that she'd let me anyhow]. I'm over that. With any hope, it will be public transport for the rest of my life. [Good for the environment! It's hot enough in the world already!] Yes, I have an odd affinity for overtly urban areas. Though nature is lovely, I doubt I'd survive long in it.

We have cable television now, which is really no big deal to most people, but we haven't had it since I was six. It's slowly but surely rotting my brain. And my parents are having doubts in any vestiges of intelligence I may possess, as I mainly watch cartoons [something wrong with that? I simply don't enjoy reality!]. On that note [as it was on yesterday] why is Grease such a classic? I don't understand its appeal.

Oh, oh, I forgot! I'm so proud of myself because I finally realized after probably a year [the lappy crashed last year, so technically, my laptop has been in use in its current state for about a year] that I never deleted any temp files! And believe me, I download lots of stuff on "Open" rather than "Save As" because I find it more convenient. So, hooray! 8GB free without having to delete more of my music [*sob*]. Which means room for more iconning stuff! Heh.

And just for kicks, my Latin dress will look like this! Predictable, no? Shiny, vaguely crazy. If only there were some yellow on it, so it could be [almost] a nerdy statement. I do hope you know what I mean. ^_~

Anyhow, due in part to cinieme and her nagging [<3] and in part to placing third in the "you haven't updated in forever" thingie in the LJ Animanga Awards, I'll try my best to make a decent icon post. [Thanks to everyone who voted for me, by the way; it was a rather pleasant surprise ^_^] No promises. The batches will probably be smaller than usual.

I'm not tired of iconning. I mentally icon things a lot, actually. It just takes me so long to make icons [perfectionist], and though I sometimes like them at first, I inevitably tire of nearly everything I make after I stare at it long enough. Many such creations are never posted. I also constantly feel the need to revise my style because my attention span is apparently nonexistent, which makes churning out batches even slower, as I like to provide much variation even within a batch.

Also, my computer, Photoshop in particular, is slow as hell. I should have opted for more RAM when I could have. _{{On that note, anyone know a reliable way of cracking PS CS3? I hear it is much faster...}} I've been using the faster desktop since I'm at home this summer, so that should make things happier. And I'm getting a 500GB external hard drive asap, which should also make things happier. [The lappy has a measly 70GB of disk space, barely more than my iPod!]

So this was a very long and rambly post just to say that I'm not dead. And to expect something from me soon.

eSheep?!

eSheep is just about the most awesome thing ever. I urge everyone to try it. It's a really small download and it gives hours of adorable entertainment. I've had mine fall flaming from the sky into a conveniently-placed bathtub as well as be abducted by aliens. There are also more normal things like eating flowers, rolling around, and falling asleep [awww...] Apparently, sheepy also falls in love, but that has yet to happen with my eSheep.

My friend Anita got me hooked on this and it's so cute. It just runs around your desktop as you do other things and, like I said before, it's just plain amusing. Yay! eSheep!

01. Whenever I cross streets and there is oncoming traffic, I imagine my own death because I don't want death to take me by surprise. I want a moment before when my brain goes, "Oh, I'm about to die," before it happens.

02. I have a thing for curly boing-boing hair. I think ever since I read one of the Beverly Cleary "Ramona" books where the main character feels compelled to pull the hair of a classmate with curly boing-boing hair. I currently have fadingly curly hair from a perm I got 2 months ago. It was not at all a horrific 80s perm.

03. I ballroom dance. I definitely prefer Latin [Rumba, Cha Cha, Jive... etc.] to Standard [Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango... etc.] because the frame in standard makes my neck hurt.

04. When I get old, I don't want to dye my hair dark so the white won't show through the way my mother does. I will dye it white [is that possible?]. My Nordic Lit professor can rock it. So will I.

05. The icons I make reflect the style in which I dress.

06. When I'm at home, I sleep on the couch downstairs rather than my own room. It's comfy.

07. People tend to mistake me for being Japanese. If not that, then Korean. No one who didn't know of me or my parents [etc.] ever guesses Chinese first [which is what I actually am].

08. One of my favorite hobbies is climbing things. Like trees. Especially trees. Subconscious way of making up for a lack of height? [I'm 4' 10"]

09. I used to be obsessed with snipping out the split ends from my hair, so much that I would do so for hours without realizing. I then decided to chop my hair off to my shoulders. That hair is still somewhere in the downstairs closet of my house because I'd always meant to donate it to Locks of Love, but never got around to it.

10. My only broken-ish bone was from when my neighbor/good friend's 3-year-old brother sat on my finger.

I made a wallpaper-type thing for my friend Natalya and I just thought I'd post it here since I haven't posted anything relevant in a while... She's very fond of apples, as you can probably tell.

Tutorial 06: Yuuko

Made with: Photoshop CS2 [but probably translatable to other versions of PS, at least]
Level: Intermediate [not for your first icon]
Required Knowledge: Adjustment Layers, Layer Masks [preferably], Basic Photoshop Know-how

[Step 1] Instead of starting off with the image, as we usually do, we will start of with a solid base of #707070, a medium grey color. Already this is starting to intrigue you, ne? ^_^

[Step 2] Now, we take the base picture, in my case, of the lovely Yuuko, and set it on top at Hard Light 100%. Okay, so it's not much of a difference, but it slightly brightens up the whole image. And if it doesn't, then just let me believe it does. ^_^

[Step 3] Now, you want to duplicate the previous layer, and apply the following adjustments, all of which can be found under [Image > Adjustments]: Auto Levels, Auto Contrast, Auto Color. I don't know if the order matters, but it's probably insignificant if does. I set that to Soft Light Fill 26% You can adjust opacity to your liking, but I didn't want it to make too much of a difference.

[Step 4]Now, take this pretty texture by... [?] and set it to Overlay 84%, adjusting opacity as needed. I know, I know. It looks really bad now. It'll be fixed, I promise.

[Step 5] Now, I duplicated my base image of Yuuko, put it on top, and desaturated it. I set it to Pin Light 100%. This just darkens some of the black again. No biggie.

[Step 6] Now this is the step where it starts to get a little prettier [hopefully]. Set this texture by unmasked_icons to Screen 100% and marvel at how the icky dark-orange has suddenly gone away. Yay!! Go Blue!

[Step 7] Well, our image is... dare I say still really weak and pale-looking? This next step will make it all so much better! Take your desaturated Yuuko image from step 5 and duplicate it. Drag it to the top, and invert the colours [Image > Adjustments > Invert]. Then adjust the brightness and contrast of this image [Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast], reducing the contrast as you see fit, but leaving enough so that the lines are clearly differentiated from the background. Mine looks like the one you see below. Set that to Soft Light 100%. Hopefully, your image looks a lot better after this.

[Step 8] Now is where it sucks to be those with PSP, because we are using the magical Selective Color! Create a new Selective Colour adjustment layer and play around with it until you're happy with the results. I'd rather not give you my settings in a case like this, but I understand that results can vary a LOT with Selective Color, so I'll show you mine as an example if you really really really want this particular colour scheme. Please don't use it if it creates something ugly! It's always nice to see people being creative as well

Those settings should make things pretty and blueish. Or, if you used your own, hoorah for uniqueness! *gives you cookie*. In any case, just play around until you have something nice. This is pretty much the MAJOR color adjustment in this tutorial, aside from the shiny overlay layer.

[Step 9] Another adjustment layer. Curves this time. I'm not going to show you my settings for this, since you can probably just guess or play around... Just remember, don't make any major crazy-bendy curves, or you're almost guaranteed something scary. Follow the natural line they give you and tweak it. I used mine to make it brighter and more contrasty.

[Step 10] We're almost there! I then took this light texture by anais_dirge and set it on top at Lighten Fill 66% I thought it would go nicely with the spots my image originally had.

[Step 11] Now, I added a border, as usual. It's from a color I eyedropped from my icon. That's as far as I'll go into that, since borders are typically self-explanatory.

[Step 12] The final layer is a solid layer of #fff200, a really bright yellow. I set it to Saturation 11% to boost the brightness just a little. The original image is pretty bright to begin with, so I didn't use much. Just be careful about opacity, because saturation with such a strong color is dangerous. And that's the end of that. ^_^

"Real-life" Icon Post #4

Yeah, I've got a bit of time. Homework has been lighter on me than it apparently has been on everyone else, so... ^_^ Actually, a lot of these are quite old. Would you believe... several months...? ^_^;; Mostly the ice cream ones. I suppose it's a bit too late for ice cream, but if you're in a really hot place, say... Riverside, California, it's still quite warm enough for ice cream. I rather prefer ice cream on colder days, since the ice cream doesn't melt as quick, and I hate melty ice cream.

Anyhow, I'm sorry. The Yuuko tutorial is coming. I just have to upload images and make it all come together by actually [bleh] narrating and such. It's pretty short, but I have ballroom dancing class tonight and reading to do for Poli Sci, Philosophy, and MCellBio, so... I might get around to it... during the weekend or by next week. I have been forcing myself to make around 2 icons per night though. Mostly CLAMP, but we'll see. Depends on if I get a positive response for these... ^_^

These are still rather experimental, since I don't do real images mostly, so comments are especially appreciated, expecially those with constructive criticism.

Iconing Jargon

I really hate exclusion layers. Not they themselves, but what iconists do with them. So many ways to get it wrong. I cannot stress that enough. And dark blue? Overused, completely.

I feel relatively guilt-free in saying this. Personally, I hardly ever use them.

Tutorial 05: [Karen!]

Difficulty: Moderate. Don't try if you're a beginner.
Requirements: Curves, Hue/Saturation, Basic Photoshopping
Written for: Photoshop CS2 [but should be transferrable to other editions]

Before Beginning: allow me to remind you that this is only a guideline. don't copy me exactly. That's boring! Adjust opacities, change textures around, and basically just fool around with your image until you like it. Simply copying me will not improve your own abilities.

Also, I suggest using a black-and-white manga base as I have done here, as it is what the tutorial was written for. I dunno if it will work for photos or regular manga bases, but I have some doubts that the coloring will end up nice.

[Step 1] Take your pretty base from exhero and prep it. [for me, this means duplicating and setting to Soft Light, which was totally unnecessary, but it's a habit of mine. ^_^;;]

[Step 2] Take this texture, which was cropped out of something by Tre, and set it to Multiply 100%

[Step 3] Take this texture, cropped out of a different section of the same large one and set it to Soft Light 100%

[Step 4] Next texture, by [?] Multiply 100%

[Step 5] Duplicate the previous texture and set to Soft Light 60%, adjusting opacity to your liking.

[Step 6] Take this texture by wonderland__ and set to Color 81%. Here, I took a layer mask and masked over any parts that I didn't like. If you don't know how to use a layer mask, use the eraser.

[Step 7] Take this next texture by dearest and, a la boutique, select portions of it with the lasso tool and apply the Hue/Saturation filter to little pieces at a time until you like it. Play around with this, as it is the most crucial step and will determine wheter or not your icon is icky or not. I set that layer to Color 51%.

[Step 8] I then duplicated the texture that we've just mangled [hehe ^_^] and rotated it around. I then set it to Soft Light 100%

[Step 9] The lines in my base were starting to fade, so I duplicated the very bottom layer, dragged it to the top, and set it to Multiply 62%. You might have a different opacity.

[Step 10] Next, I took this texture by [?] and set it to Soft Light 31%. I didn't want it too light because I kind of liked where the darkness was headed...

[Step 11] Next, I did something weird. I honestly forgot what... but I ended up with this as a layer and set it to Soft Light 67%. I'm sorry to not be more helpful, but I really don't remember what I did. ^_^;; Please don't hurt me.

[Step 12] Almost done! I swear!!! I duplicated the base and dragged it on top again, this time setting it to Soft Light 32% [I seem to use that blend mode a lot...]. It increases the visibility of the base a bit and lightens the rest.

[Step 13] Text and border time!! Just add whatever text and tinytext you want. My border is really basic. 3px white border with a light grey 1px border on top of it. It's a classic. ^_^ You could stop here or anywhere after this if you want to...

[Step 14] But I didn't stop there. ^_^ Now, I add this light texture by awmp and set it to Hard Light 100%. It's shiny! Melikes the shiny.

[Step 15] I then made a Curves Adjustment layer. I'm not going to show you my settings because it depends on what looks good... but I ended up with this:

[Step 16] You could stop here if you wanted to, but if you want to make it uber!bright, then mangle the same texture by dearest that we did before with the Hue/Saturation thingie, but make sure it looks different from before. I set mine to Overlay 73%, but you can try any blend mode you want to.

So, I wanted to post a last, relatively small icon dump before IB testing consumes my life and free time. It's not organized the way it usually is this time. I apologize for that. However, I'm sure you can figure it out since it's a smallish post. I really hope you like them. ^_^
