Wow guys. I really have A LOT of thank you cards I'll need to send. A lot more than I'd ever have imagined. I will need to start going around to everyone who reposted as well and send a big thank you because this thing has really gotten around. I just got home from running around with Annabelle and getting money into my bank (I had a reimbursement check from work that came in), and I am utterly exhausted. Because of other issues like the fact that the pharmacy has forgotten to call about my prescription for a week now and I am in some pain, I may be taking it easy and going to bed early tonight. But I have so many people I need to get back to ASAP, so I will do what I can tonight.
You guys all rock <3
Don't let anyone ever tell you that there aren't good people in the world. I have had people far and wide reach out to me either with advice, trying to put me into contact with charities or vets, spreading the word or donating even just a little money.
Some people have said "It's only a little bit" or "I wish I could do more". Trust me when I say that every little does help and because of how many people did "a little bit", I feel confident we can get Annabelle taken care of.
So the question everyone is likely asking themselves:
How is Annabelle doing today?
The vet said that she improved slightly. It's a slow process, but yesterday they stopped the infection and today they noticed some healing going on. New skin was starting to form and her body was trying to heal. This is GOOD news. It's slow and we have to keep being aggressive, but it means the treatment is working.
She's on three very strong antibiotics right now, maybe a fourth if things slow down. They have her on Benedryl and an anti-inflammatory as well (though I ran out of that tonight). It's to cover all the bases here.
The vet did say that these things sometimes get better and then go downhill again. I'm hopeful, but we have to be diligent to make sure this doesn't happen. I'd be destroyed if she's not fixed up.
Things are looking good though, so let's keep our fingers crossed that they continue to do so. Things could go wrong at any time... We don't want that.
Her vitals are still good, her personality is still upbeat and normal. She's on the couch and watching me at this very moment. She's putting weight on the paw and able to walk fairly well with the bandage on, so that's good too. Makes going to the bathroom that much easier on all of us.
No more IV for the time being, so that's good. Just daily wound maintenance until enough healing takes place for surgery. The surgery will be to suture the wound and there will be maintenance with that as well, I'm sure. She has a special type of bandage system in place now that I can't do at home (it requires dousing the pads in medicine before putting them on the wound) and also the cleaning that they have to do.
This has to be a daily thing, which I am so thankful to now have the ability to do it without worrying how I could afford it. It's not cheap. The vet can't say for sure how long this will take before they can move on to surgery. She's hopeful that maybe we can do it next week, but she said there's no way to tell. If things happen to get worse before they get better or it doesn't heal as fast as they hope... Well then we just keep doing what we are doing, or maybe add more antibiotics to the mix, and hopefully figure this out.
And I am going to look into pet insurance ASAP. Previously I was putting aside money for emergency vet bills and figured that was more worthwhile since a lot of Dane issues aren't covered or they are very expensive to cover. This sort of made me realize why I might need it. My savings are for emergency vet bills was gone in no time. So maybe pet insurance is something to look into again. Couldn't hurt, right?
I have also been looking into the charities that were posted. I have just had like no time with work and running around getting here. I don't even get a lunch break these days (though today it was for someone helping me, so that's good. Other times it's running around to Scottrade to get money out of my IRA or doing something or another with the vet...).
I am just wore the heck out. I want to stop moving for like 10 minutes and just chill out. But I am looking into everything, and I really liked the idea of contacting vet schools and the media since it is such a rare and strange thing. Maybe they would want to study it while healing my puppy.
All great ideas and while I couldn't respond personally yet, they are all being utilized. I promise :)
So the outlook is good, we just have to keep going down this road and make sure that hr infection keeps getting better.
I just couldn't do this without all the help from you guys. You're all so amazing. Thank you <3
Please feel free to link to this post if you've reposted my previous request. Let people know how Annabelle is doing. I will try to send out thank you cards soon, but I'm looking at like 100 thank you cards so it could take some time. But I want everyone to know that Annabelle is slowly recovering and that I'm hopeful about getting her back to normal in no time.
More updates to come as she heals. I hope to have her running at the dog beach again soon, and yes... this time I will post photos!
