Hi there! I'm a pixel artist and illustrator in Brisbane, Australia. I designed Pixel Glade inspired by sites from the late 1990's, but with accessibility and modern web standards in mind.
If you're interested in a commission or just want to say hello, you can contact me at admin@pixelglade.net.au.
I started learning braille in 2022 when I was doing my graphic design diploma. I was having regular migraines and learning braille gave me a way to read while resting my eyes (and I prefer to read than listen to an audiobook). Since then, I've had interactions with the OurBlind community, which is for the vision impaired, the blind, and their allies. It's one of the best moderated Discord servers I've been on, and the people there are genuinely lovely. You learn a lot about the blind community while interacting with the server. I've gotten to a braille reading proficiency where I can comfortably read contracted braille at a decent speed (to me, anyway). I regularly work on improving my fluency.
Manga about Disability
From OurBlind, I learned from a user that there was an accessible version of a manga available in Japan called Love's in Sight!. It's a good story so check it out if you're interested in vision impairments in manga. It has a good mix of comedy and light-heartedness.
In terms of disability rep in manga, A Silent Voice is probably the most well known (about a deaf student). When disability is done well in media not only is it good representation but the stories tend to have more depth than the average slice of life manga, have an educational element, and have complicated and and realistic conflicts and struggles. So if you think your slice of life reading list needs an upgrade, consider reading one of these.
