Welcome to the end of the world! Every year on New Year’s Day, the Japanese look forward to the “First Sunrise of the Year”. There are even flights from Haneda Airport and back, just to see the sunrise over Fuji-San from the plane.

This picture was taken not far from my house at the Pacific Ocean, on the Bōsō-Peninsula, the easternmost point of the main island of Honshū.

ようこそ、世界のさい果ての地へ！ 日本の人びとは毎年、元旦に「初日の出」を見ることを楽しみにしています。富士山越しに登りゆく、新年最初のお天道さまを眺める。そのためだけのフライトが羽田空港から出ているほどです。

さて この写真。我が家からそう遠くないところで撮ったものです。日本のメインランド本州の、太平洋に面した房総半島、いちばん東の果ての方です。

Every year again in the spring there is only one important news in Japan, when will the cherry blossoms bloom where? Countless experts talk on television, the Japan Meteorological Agency determines the “official” time of full flowering on the basis of a specific tree in Tokyo!

This picture is of one of my favorite cherry blossom trees at night, found at the Yotsuya Mitsuke bridge in my neighborhood.

写真は、僕のお気に入りの夜桜のひとつ。我が家から遠くない四谷見附橋のところです。

30 Years ago I made my very first trip to Japan, as a tourist! This picture was taken 1994 in Kyoto’s Sanjūsangen-dō – long time before we used the word “Overtourism”. I liked the expression of each student very much – only one girl saw to me directly and smiled. I wonder, what they are doing now?

30年前、僕は初めて日本を旅しました、観光客として！この写真はその時 1994年、京都の三十三間堂でのショットです –「オーバーツーリズム」現象のはるかむかしのこと – 彼ら学生さんたち めいめいの表情が大好きで – ただひとり 僕にニコニコ目線を送る少女がいたりします – 思うのです、彼らはどうなっただろう、今 何をしているだろう？ と。

みなさんにとって、平和な年でありますように！

Since October Japan opened its borders again, after 2.5 years. Luckily it did not take 150 years, like the last time! Instead flights to Europe take 4 hours longer, because you have to fly over the North Pole!

This picture was taken 1990 on a Moscow Airport, still quite analog at the time…

10月から日本は2年半ぶりに国境を解放しました。幸いなことに、前回のように265年もかかることはありませんでしたね！　しかしながらヨーロッパへのフライトは４時間増し。なぜなら北極上空を飛行しないといけないからです。

さて、こちらの写真は1990年、モスクワ空港にて撮影したもの。
当時はまだかなりアナログ……。

How was Year No. 2 of the Pandemic? Here in Japan we had the Olympic Games of the Year before, but like anywhere in the World only on TV. Just the Fireworks you could see “in real” over in the Sky over the Olympic Stadium. This Photo was talken back in 1994 on a beach in Shizuoka. The name of the sunken ship is unknown…

Let’s hope for the light at the end of the Tunnel!

嵐のパンデミック・イヤー2年目、野を越え山を越え、こちら日本では2020からの持ち越しオリンピックを開催しました。私はと言えば世界各地のみなさまと同様、TV中継で観戦。オリンピックスタジアム上空に打ち上げられた開会式の花火だけ、かろうじてガチで見ました。

年賀写真は遡ること1994年、静岡のとあるビーチにて撮影したものです。沈んだ船の名は知れず‥‥‥

さてもこの長いトンネルが終わり希望のひかりあらんことを！ステイ・ストロング＆ヘルシイ！

What a short and long year was 2020 for all of us?

I spend almost all the time isolated at my house at the Pacific Coast, also a wonderful experience. Let’s hope, this +1 year will be better! We’ll (probably) see the “+1 Olympics” in Tokyo.

I was born while the first Olympics in Tokyo took place. Back in 1964 that was in October. This year we will see the second Olympics in Tokyo, but this time in very hot July! Let’s hope to enjoy very cool Olympics – this time again!

I visited Japan the first time as a backpacker 25 years ago. How time flies! This year I am sending you a picture from my very first Sakura. This and other pictures will be exhibited from 10.01. – 30.05.2019 in Mori-Ōgai-Memorial in Berlin.
