Buffering is designed to insure against data loss when a PI Server is unavailable for archiving. If a PI Server is shut down for maintenance, extremely busy, or simply unavailable due to a network failure or system crash, you can ensure that the data being collected on your interface nodes is not lost by configuring buffering. With buffering, incoming data on your interface nodes are held in a buffer file until the PI Server is available again. Once available, the buffers are emptied and no data is lost as a result.
