The Sound of Thunder
A bit of random liveblogging, because I kept being interrupted while watching this anyway so why not make notes:
- ooh, Saru is challenging Pike. Now I'm wondering if the presence of the captain's chair in the intro is a bit of a clue here. Pike took the chair from Saru when he joined, and pre-vahar'ai, Saru didn't object. Now he does object. This could be interesting
- and Michael's got in between them. ILU Michael, and more to the point, Saru loves you and will listen to you. Stick together please
- Siranna! Is adorable! Tea! And justifiably angry, under the circumstances, poor both of them
- I feel that Pike could stand to make it plainer to the Ba'ul that they can't have Saru back. I don't really blame him for speaking up after they demand his return several times
- oh okay now Pike's backing him up, better late than never
- oh Michael don't let him go alone
- too late
- 'you don't even know what you are' - okay now I think the theory that the Ba'ul are grown-up Kelpiens may well be true
- nope, maybe not
- oh dear, Saru is going to turn out to be the monster, and the reason the Ba'ul cull them all before they turn into Saru is because they were the top predators once
- yep
- now Saru shoots poison darts from where his ganglia used to be? did I see that right?
- do I suspect that Saru is going to have to learn how to control his ragemonster instincts the way he used to have to control his terror? this will be fun
- oh wow Saru really is Hulking out here. I adored meek scared Saru but I think I might love ragemonster Saru even more. Destroy more flying death bots with your bare hands, Saru!
- this ending is all a bit pat. I'd have liked to see a Ba'ul in dialogue with the Kelpiens at the end, I'm not convinced they're not just going to declare war again as soon as Discovery breaks orbit. Also it was going all 'how do we control our rage' in the middle and then that just sort of seemed to be fine because Siranna. And I mean, Siranna is great, but I don't imagine the Ba'ul are just going to give up their previously successful strategy overnight and if Saru is any guide the Kelpiens are going to be hard to rein in.
- have to agree with Pike here, Tyler: 'oh dear they just intervened to prevent genocide maybe they'll kill us next' is not a convincing argument
- current theory: the Red Angel is the Doctor. Manipulates space and time with highly advanced technology that looks magical to others, has a tendency to follow particular individuals around helping them out, stops genocide and saves people a lot. Currently trying to get Michael to become a companion. No?
But seriously, I loved this episode. So much interesting development for Saru <3. And we're going to Vulcan next!
