Sword is a melee Phighter. He was released on 19 February 2022 with Playtest 1.

Overview

Sword is a melee Phighter who serves as a 'jack of all trades' within his class. He boasts decent mobility, high melee damage, and solid bulk. He excels in close-quarters combat, constantly pressuring enemies with Slash and Lunge while also disorienting and reaching them with Dolphin Slash. However, he is limited in ranged combat, relying solely on Blade Beam to chip away at enemies from afar. His passive, Spirit of the Sword, enables him to empower an ability for high bursts of damage, letting him make quick work of his foes. Sword can even perform large crowd control and area denial through his Phinisher, All-Mighty Axle Arc.

Abilities

Passive
Spirit of the Sword

Damaging enemies or being damaged charges a meter. When charged, press R or touch the sword icon to power up your next ability.

Meter charge (Dealing damage): 10% charge upon landing Slash, 5% charge upon landing any other ability
Meter charge (Receiving damage): Gain 25% of damage received as meter charge percentage (e.g. 20 damage taken = 5% charge gained)

  • Sword gains more meter charge for every additional target hit by his abilities.
  • Dealing damage with empowered abilities does not contribute to meter gain.*
  • Meter charge gained from receiving damage can vary slightly due to issues with rounding, meaning it can take anywhere from ~350 to ~450 damage taken to gain a full meter charge.
  • The effects of Armored and Vulnerable have no effect on meter gain in any way.
  • Using empowered abilities puts the unempowered version of that ability on cooldown, but empowered abilities have no cooldowns.
  • Spirit of the Sword can be freely toggled on and off at almost any time, unless under the effects of Stun.
  • Meter charge does not accumulate past its max charge, meaning Sword's meter charge will always be set to 0% upon activating an empowered ability.
  • Sword's meter charge is set to 0% upon respawning.
  • Reaching full meter charge plays a sound effect audible to all nearby players and causes Sword to emit a special particle effect.

  • Can be used mid-unempowered Lunge to cancel it early.
  • Slash has no endlag, meaning all abilities can be used the instant its hitbox is sent out.
  • Slash is unable to be used while R is being pressed/held, regardless of whether Spirit of the Sword is available.

Fire a slash which travels through enemies and walls. When empowered, the beam will boomerang and deal aoe damage when an enemy is hit.

Unpowered
Damage: 30 (projectile) + 15 (melee)
Range: 350 studs
Meter charge: +5
Windup: 0.3 seconds
Cooldown: 6 seconds

Empowered
Damage: 40 (projectile) + 20 (melee) / 30 (AoE)
Range: 130 studs (initial) / 750 studs (returning)
Windup: 0.3 seconds

  • Both versions have an additional hitbox at close range which deal additional damage.
  • Both versions can pierce through walls and players.
  • Neither versions of Blade Beam disappear after death.
  • Empowered Blade Beam has no cooldown between hits on the same player, meaning an enemy can take both instances of damage at the same time if hit at max range.
  • Empowered Blade Beam has no limit to how many of its AOE hitboxes can hit the same player, meaning it will do exponentially more total damage when hitting larger groups of enemies.
  • When returning, empowered Blade Beam will redirect itself towards Sword at a reduced turn rate.

  • The initial swing of empowered Dolphin Slash pulls enemies towards Sword.
  • The three spins of empowered Dolphin Slash are guaranteed to damage enemies hit by the initial swing, unless line of sight is broken while the ability is active.
  • Slow and Bound are self applied on the initial swing of empowered Dolphin Slash, disappearing once the first of the three successive spins begins.
  • Grounded disables the use of Dolphin Slash.

Stun applied: remaining Lunge duration + 1 second

Dash distance: 60 / 70 (airborne) studs

  • Unempowered Lunge can be canceled early by using Slash, however empowered Lunge is unable to be canceled.
  • Unempowered Lunge's hitbox lingers for an additional 0.1 seconds after canceling it with Slash.
  • Empowered Lunge's initial hitbox can damage multiple enemies if it hits all of them at the same time, however will not pin more than one.
  • Empowered Lunge's victim will stay pinned for a brief moment after Sword has already regained control.
  • Empowered Lunge gains a new AOE hitbox after pinning a target, damaging anybody in Sword's path and staying active for the remaining duration of Lunge. This hitbox deals less damage than the initial hitbox.
  • Empowered Lunge's AOE damage grants 5% charge to your meter for each enemy hit, being Sword's only way to gain meter from an empowered ability.
  • Neither version of Lunge has its hitbox disappear after death. Pinned enemies will be dragged with Sword's ragdoll.
  • Empowered Lunge is unable to grab enemies who have the immovable status effect.
  • Grounded disables the use of Lunge.
  • Landing Empowered Lunge tags your character for kill credit by the player you hit.

Click to throw your sword which sticks onto anything it touches and explodes after pulsing 3 times. Instantly recharges your meter.

Damage: 50 (direct) + 150 (explosion)
Knockback force: 35 (explosion)
Meter charge: Set to 100% (when thrown)
Explosion time: 1.5 seconds
Activation window: 1 second
Phinisher points: 75
Phinisher cutscene: 1 second

  • Damage from All-Mighty Axle Arc cannot generate Phinisher points.
  • Due to All-Mighty Axle Arc's explosion dealing over 100 damage, it ignores all instances of Armored.
  • Sword cannot use any abilities until his sword returns to him after exploding.
  • If Sword dies before the thrown sword sticks to an enemy or the environment, it will disappear.
  • Sword can also be damaged by the explosion.
  • Sword's All-Mighty Axle Arc can be thrown early by using his primary during the activation window.
  • Sword's weapon will return to him roughly 4 seconds after being thrown if it fails to connect with anything. (e.g. thrown into the void)

Development:

  • Sword's abilities and appearance are inspired by Marth and Ike from the Fire Emblem franchise.[2]
  • Empowered Dolphin Slash was inspired by Link's Up special, "Spin Attack", from Super Smash Bros..[3]
  • Lunge was inspired by the Linked Sword's double-click lunge. [3]
  • Sword was the first Phighter to be developed, created alongside the core gameplay systems used in PHIGHTING!, which took one month to complete.
  • Moon Animator was used to animate the cape rather than Blender as Roblox Studio had issues importing it.[4]
