July 6 was the Dalai Lama's 90th birthday, and in honor of his stunning work on behalf of the whole world, the Tibetan community has announced this new year the Year of Compassion. I love this idea, and I've been thinking about how I want to participate. This is what I've decided.

Every day this year I will choose one being - a person, a tree, a member of an endangered species, a lake, a frightened child, an armed person, the exhausted earth, or a powerful person acting badly and in need of healing. Well, you get the idea.

I will hold that being in my heart and send kindness throughout the day. And, of course, no surprise to all you dear people who know me well, I will keep a special list, like mini-postcards from my year. Where will this path take me? I don't know.
