My Guilty Pleasure

Last fall I somehow got inspired to track down info on a TV show from my childhood called Jem and Holograms. Oddly, I never actually watched the show as a kid, but I distinctly remember playing with the associated Barbie doll, and being a little creeped out by it because the proportions weren't quite right and the hair was usually a tangle.

Anyway, in my internet huntings I found all the episodes on YouTube and proceeded to binge through three seasons over the course of Fall semester, usually over a bowl of ramen. The show wasn't half bad, especially the episodes written by creator Christy Marx. It's still a kids show, and the messages/premises are all contrived, but it was both a fun walk down memory lane and pleasant escape from the intense stress I was feeling, having hurled myself into a big, strange city 2,000 miles from home.

As you may have noticed, the 80's are back. Transformers are back, off-the-shoulder shirts and leggings are back, even Madonna is back, though the name has since been changed to Lady Gaga. And, by the way, Jem and the Holograms are now back too! I just saw a billboard as I drove through Hollywood Hills on my way to visit Daniel. It's a good thing I didn't crash my car straining my neck, because I was SURE I was hallucinating. Or seeing a hologram. Heh.

My first thought was that a live action movie is in the works. And that Hollywood would inevitably botch it the way they did Scooby Doo and Alvin and the Chipmunks. But as far as I can tell, no, there is no movie. Yet. I give it 9 months. But a TV station called Hub is apparently rerunning the old cartoons this summer (along with Strawberry Shortcake... remember her?). It would seem they are testing the waters to see what this new generation of Millennials think of big hair, inexplicable face paint, and keytars. And then cash in on it. Like ya do.

But in the meantime, if any of you girls want to revisit a childhood trademark, now's your chance to tune in and see some truly, truly outrageous 80's memorabilia.
