You’re the BEST! I lol’ed my whole way through this column. Brought back fond memories of teaching my youngest in the wild Wisconsin countryside while he snapped my neck. Hysterical! Thanks for being the greatest writer of all time! ❤️

Ha! Thank you CarolAnne! But YOU are the best…I love the vision of you guiding those boys through clultchwork…but you know what? You’ve done that your entire life, still doing it today for a whole other generation…the best matriarch ever.

I have managed to keep stick shift cars through raising two kids. The younger one got mad at me and cried when learning, but she now owns a 6-speed manual Crosstrek.

Loved my manual transmission cars. Learned to drive shortly before my wedding, back in the day when driving schools would teach you. Even drove to my wedding but almost missed it because I didn’t realize you needed to put the car in 1st, not Park/Neutral, when parking. Since it was in neutral it kept rolling unless I put my foot on the brake, and I had images of the officiant marrying us in the parking lot. Luckily my husband came out and told me what to do, and the day (and the next 40 years) were ones to celebrate.

Only gave up the manual when my granddaughter was born. She and her parents lived with me, so 3 adults plus infant plus much child-related stuff meant I needed a sedan but it seemed only the smallest models were available in manual by that time. So reluctantly bought an automatic. Still miss the manual - and, as you say, in today’s world it’s the best anti-theft device around.
