	2014.07.06 00.35 Tips for using LJ All right, my 40-something tumblr-escaping LJ n00b friends, I've seen people confused by all these things so here's a quick starter list for LJ acclimatisation: Friends lock If you friend someone, they will be able to see anything you post publicly or under friends lock. You will also see their public posts on your friends page. Only if they friend you back will their f-locked material appear on your friends page. Custom lock You can create posts for a small, tailored group of people only. This also means your friends might be posting some things you can't see. How to avoid talking into the void It's not very likely people will stumble across your journal. To meet people, join communities and talk there. Sometimes if you friend someone they'll click over to your journal and investigate, but they probably won't friend you back until you've got a bit of content. Tagging Tumblr narrative-style tagging isn't really a thing on LJ, where tagging is more a way of people your own journal in order. Do it if you like but at time of writing it'll mostly advertise that you come from tumblr. Read More cuts Use lj-cut to create Read Mores. Type [lj-cut text="Read more under the cut"] - but use pointy instead of square brackets. [/lj-cut] gets you back to typing in the fully visible post. To do the same thing in a comment instead of a post, use lj-spoiler instead of lj-cut. Anyone got any questions or things I should add? I am frankly shit at all things remotely internet-techy but have managed to din a few LJ procedures into my head by dint of having been a permanent account-holder for 10 years(!) now.

	2014.06.19 08.45 I need to do some curating over here. I'm going to unfollow some journals that appear to be dead (if I unfollow you and you care, yell), and investigate who's who. My LJ friending policy has always been that I prefer to know someone a bit before actually friending them... which can of course be tricky if that person does most things under f-lock. Perils of LJ. This will probably take a couple of days.



	2014.06.18 22.28 waves at new arrivals from tumblr. It's kind of quiet here. Or if it isn't you can f-lock everything and keep the wank out, o joy of peace. To everyone else: guess what, the Sherlock fandom on tumblr has exploded into such wank that people are actually starting to come back to LJ. Possibly including me, though I am a total social media sheep and will only post here if other people do.

	2014.04.08 03.27 Monument to Anna Akhmatova, looking across the river to Kresty prison. This is part of a monument pair, the statue of Akhmatova set back from the river and then the Monument to Victims of Political Repression on the embankment. These are in considerably better nick than the prison exterior. Akhmatova and environs seem to be properly cared for, complete with newly-dug flowerbeds in front of her. (Possibly this is because her environs are a car park, and cars are very important here; the monument pair is bisected by yet another massive embankment highway. But a high standard of maintenance is not the norm.) The complete lack of monumentage outside the prison itself makes a bit more sense once you cross the river and see what's there. It is after all a working jail, operating theoretical modern justice, as well as a site of historical injustice. Monument to the victims of political repression. Grubby Kresty prison environs and small hard-to-read plaque. Prison. Not getting any more cheerful. Note meteor-like Russian attack preciptation. Cultural montage. Over-grand yellow Stalin-era apartment building, unreconstructed prison, shiny western cars, and extremely au courant billboard. It's advertising self-contained suburban apartments with 'good neighbours guaranteed'. If I'm reading the cultural cues right, the viewer is supposed to identify with the ordinary little girl on the right, who can't do her ironing because the board is being hogged by an all-new, all-false and probably economically illegitimate New Russian sex goddess. Choosing who lives next door is a bit of an urban Russian obsession, after decades of living in state-allocated communal flats.

	2013.02.04 21.29 Bipolar UK appeal Along with a lot of charities in the economic downturn, Bipolar UK is having a funding crisis. According to the Guardian, the charity itself is facing closure if it can’t raise £100,000 in the next few weeks. The charity’s own website is less stark and say ‘its services’ face closure , rather than that it is going to implode completely. However, the service affected are the outreach ones: self-help groups and information and advice provision such as helplines. http://www.bipolaruk.org.uk/appeal-why-we-need-your-help.html I’ve just donated £100, which I can do because I’m lucky enough to be mildly enough affected by my Bipolar II that I can still work full-time. The people who need the charity most aren’t in that position. They are also poorly served by the NHS; even before the current cuts, mental health was disproportionately underfunded. Suzanne Hudson of Bipolar UK says ‘The sad irony is that this funding crisis comes at a time when bipolar is beginning to be understood. As a result more individuals and families are finding the courage to seek our support. 2012 was unprecedented in terms of the number of individuals contacting us for help and accessing our services. It is increasingly the case that individuals’ first contact with us is at a time of crisis involving intervention with emergency services.’ My own experience of the charity is based around occasional attendance of a monthly group. You’re not supposed to talk about what happened outside the group itself, but I don’t think it will be a very terrible breach if I quote one new attendee saying ‘This is so valuable – just being here and talking to people who know the experience, so you’re not alone.’ So if you’ve enjoyed Four Corners of the Western World, and/or winced at some of Penny’s more alarming pratfalls over the past 18 months, please consider making a small donation.
