John “Jiggs” and Maxine Fisk Memorial Scholarship Fund

John “Jiggs” and Maxine Fisk exemplified the lasting impact of planned giving, using their generosity to support the education of future generations and leave a lasting legacy in the Pendleton community. Both were long-time Umatilla County natives and lived in Pendleton for many years as cattle ranchers. Jiggs also had a long-standing involvement with the Pendleton Round-Up, serving as its President from 1976 to 1978. The Fisks were deeply engaged in the community and cared deeply for its citizens.
In his will, Jiggs established the Fisk Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Pendleton Foundation Trust, with the first scholarship awarded in fall 2005. The Scholarship is awarded to a graduating Pendleton High School senior with at least a 3.0 GPA, in recognition of their academic achievements and involvement in activities. This prestigious award, which is not based on financial need, honors Jiggs and Maxine Fisk, who were generous supporters of the Trust and passionate about education.
This scholarship awards $3,000 for student’s freshman year, renewable for a second year for a total award of $6,000. Apply through the Pendleton Foundation Trust Scholarship application, due March 1st.





2022 | Anders Oja received the Jiggs and Maxine Fisk Memorial Scholarship totaling $6,000 over two years. Anders will attend Princeton University to study environmental engineering or an affiliated field. In addition to physics and chemistry teachers, he appreciates the ag-science program at PHS which introduced him to welding- an interest he has developed into a small business.
2021 | Bella Baumgartner was awarded the Jiggs and Maxine Fisk Memorial Scholarship of $5,000. Bella will attend Oregon State University to study Political Science and Psychology in anticipation of application to law school.
2020 | Ashlynn Madril is the daughter of Allen and Michelle Madril. She will attend Colorado State this fall, studying neuroscience. Ashlynn participated in Orchestra, Leadership, Soccer, and Tennis. She was also a member of CommuniCare, President of National Honors Society, and ASB secretary. Ashlynn received the citizenship cup, graduated with highest honors, and varsity letters for soccer and tennis as well as achievement awards in various classes (i.e. having over 95% in the class).
2019 | Margaretta “Maggie” Scanlan is the daughter of John and Jill Scanlan. Maggie attained a GPA of 4.0 (weighted GPA 4.32) while taking many honors and AP classes throughout her high school career. She was a Link Crew Leader and Astra member and chair. Maggie lettered in tennis and soccer and was involved in band. She is a Citizenship Cup winner and a member of the National Honor Society. Maggie plans on attending Oregon State University to major in Biochemistry and minor in Spanish. Her career goal is to work in a lab researching new medicines to help people.
2018 | Lauren Richards was awarded the Fisk Scholarship of $5,000. She is the daughter of Steve and Kim Richards. Lauren plans on attending Claremont McKenna College to major in pre-med. Her career goal is to be a physician. Lauren attained a GPA of 4.0 and a weighted GPA of 4.35 taking many honors and AP classes throughout her high school career. She was president of the Associated Student Body, ASTRA Member Chairman, and a Super Link Leader. During her senior year, she participated as the captain of the volleyball team and softball team. Lauren is a Citizenship Cup winner and a member of the National Honor Society.
2017 | Jonathan Wolotira, son of Liz and Fred Wolotira, was awarded the Fisk Scholarship for $5,000. Jonathan will attend Whitworth University and plans to major in Biophysics/Pre-Medicine with a music minor. Jonathan attained a GPA of 3.94 (weighted 4.19) while being very active in music, sports, church activities, community theater, and volunteering within the community. Jonathan’s participation in sports included golf, soccer, track and basketball. Jonathan is a Citizen Cup Award winner, Wendy’s High School Heisman Male School winner, member of the All Northwest Mixed Choir, Pendleton Elks Lodge most valuable student award and numerous other academic awards. Jonathan’s long term goal is to return to Pendleton where he can establish a medical practice and be involved in community musical opportunities.
2016 | Timothy O’Hanlon is the son of Tim and Beth O’Hanlon. Tim plans to further his education at UC Berkley, where he will pursue an undergraduate degree in Physics. He then plans to attend graduate school and obtain his PhD in Physics. Tim participated in soccer, swimming, golf and track during high school. He also was active in choir, robotics, FLBA, STEM and held numerous offices in school activities. Tim’s goal is to pursue independent studies in Physics.
2015 | Anthony Papol was awarded the Fisk Scholarship for $5,000. He plans to pursue his college education concentrating on the fields of physics and math with hopes to become part of a space exploration program.
2014 | Yan Yan won the Fisk Scholarship for $5,000 towards his college education. Yan plans to study Engineering Physics at Stanford University. Yan had a weighted GPA of 4.45, has been an active participant and volunteer in many areas including Oregon East Symphony, FFA, school government, athletics, FBLA and numerous other areas. Yan won first place at the FBLA Computer Applications competition, was on high honor roll all four years, 1st place Washington State American Mathematics Competition and had many other honors and awards. Yan’s parents are Guiping Yan and Hui Yan.
2013 | Jacob Rickman won the Fisk Scholarship for $5,000 towards his college education. Jacob plans to pursue his degree in Computer Science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. During his High School years Jacob was active in School Leadership, he was a 4 year National Honor Society Member, and received the Citizenship and the Lantern Cups. In 2013 Jacob won an OSAA state title in swimming. He has a weighted GPA of 4.3. Jacob is the son of Mike and Dr. Sara Rickman.
2012 | Ethan Johnson was awarded the $5,000 Fisk Scholarship. Ethan, the son of Brian Johnson and Karen Hoholik, plans to attend the Honors College at Oregon State University to major in biology. He has been active in National Honor Society, Jazz Band and was a section leader in the orchestra. He attended Oregon Boys’ State and lettered all four years in football, wrestling and baseball, receiving first team all league honors in football. He also participated in youth activities, including Outdoor School and Little Bucks football and baseball camps.
2011 | Marika Sitz was the winner of the $5,000 Fisk Scholarship. Marika Sitz is planning to attend Stanford University this fall and major in economics. She is the daughter of Norm and Michelle Sitz. Some of her many activities at PHS included President of Future Business Leaders of America; Vice-President of Key Club and National Honor Society; ASTRA Service Club; and a member of the A Sharp Players Community Orchestra. Markia participated in cross-country, basketball and track all four years. She also is a PHS Citizen Cup winner, Umatilla County Scholar Athlete of the Year nominee, Round Up City Racers Youth Track coach, and Little Bucks Basketball Camp counselor. Marika stated, “Any success I experience will all be tied in some way to the rolling wheat fields, the stately Blue Mountains, and the town of Pendleton that helped me become who I am today.
2010 | Devin Jennings is planning to attend Brigham Young University this fall majoring in Mathematical Education. His activities at PHS include National Honor Society Service Projects, swim team, Senior Class President, Honor Choir, All State Choir, and recently had the lead in Les Miserables. Devin has also earned his Eagle Scout Award and is very active in his church. Devin stated “I have always loved to help other people. especially in teaching them something new.”
2009 | Kelli McBee is the recipient of the $5,000 Fisk Scholarship, given in memory of Jiggs and Maxine Fisk, lifelong Pendleton residents who gave money to the PFT for the annual scholarship.Kelli plans to study public relations and business at Boston College. Her parents are Dr. John and Debbie McBee. She served in student government and earned varsity letters in track, volleyball and cross country. She was a member of A Capella Choir, Key Club, the National Honor Society and ASTRA Club. She received the Citizenship Cup this year. Kelli also served as Miss Oregon Junior Miss and attended the Catholic World Youth Day in Germany. She represented Pendleton at the Hugh O’Brian Youth World Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C.
2008 | Shannon Goff is the 2008 winner of the Pendleton Foundation Trust’s $5,000.00 Fisk Scholarship. This scholarship is given annually in memory of Jiggs and Maxine Fisk, longtime Pendleton residents who gave money to the Pendleton Foundation Trust for an annual scholarship to a PHS graduate. Shannon plans to major in biochemistry with minors in Spanish and biology. Her parents are Brian and Donna Goff.
2007 | Katherine Barry was awarded the Pendleton Foundation Trust third annual Fisk Award in the amount of $5,000. The award is for scholarship and activities and is not based on financial need. Katherine Barry is the daughter of Sam and Agnes Barry of Pendleton. She graduated with the Honors Certificate and a GPA of 4.28. She is going to attend William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia. She plans to double mayor in History and Foreign Language and minor in Mathematics. She was president of the senior class; and received the Lantern Cup and the Citizenship Cup. She is also a very gifted singer and was recognized for that talent. She was selected the Fisk winner out of 38 outstanding competitors.
2006 | Jessica Baty was awarded the Fisk Memorial Scholarship for $5,000. A senior at Pendleton High School. The scholarship is based on extracurricular school activities, academic achievement and community involvement. Jessica is the daughter of David and Barbara Baty. She has a GPA of 3.94 and plans to major in physical/health education at Western Oregon University where she will play volleyball for the Wolves varsity volleyball team. Baty plans to become a secondary school teacher and coach volleyball.
2005 | Claire James was the first recipient of this scholarship. Claire plans to attend the University of Portland this fall.
