Free is my Favorite!

In all of my trolling through free forums and such, I've decided to pass on some of my favorite free things/good deals that I found today. Especially because when you combine free and you combine books, for me that's heaven <3

Freebie Roundup for January 4, 2010:

3 Free Book Giveaways from RandomHouse!

RandomHouse is giving away 3 new books for the beginning of the new year. Quantities of the free books are unknown so order yours before they run out.

Cora Sledge is horrified when her children, who doubt her ability to take care of herself, plot to remove her from her home. So what if her house is a shambles? Who cares when she last changed her clothes? If an eighty-two-year-old widow wants to live on junk food, pills, and cigarettes, hasn't she earned the right? When her kids force her into The Palisades, an assisted living facility, Cora takes to her bed, planning to die as soon as possible. But life isn't finished with her yet, not by a long shot.

Click to order your free copy

Opera singer Sabine Conrad is the toast of nineteenth-century New York high society. A celebrated soprano with the voice of an angel, she is showered with adulation by her audiences and courted by wealthy patrons. But behind the scenes, her every move is controlled by a Svengali-like manager, Gideon Price. When her attempt to escape him goes tragically awry, she flees, leaving behind a grisly murder.

Click to order your free copy

Take chocolate candy, add a family business at war with itself, and stir with an outsider’s perspective. This is the recipe for True Confections, the irresistible new novel by Katharine Weber, a writer whose work has won accolades from Iris Murdoch, Madeleine L’Engle, Wally Lamb, and Kate Atkinson, to name a few.

Click to order your free copy

Free Gilette Fusion Razor

I've done this several times before (usually online) and it always works. This is my first one over the phone (and my first in Spanish, lol) but I'm sure it'll work just as well as the others (I've gotten 1 Gilette Fusion already and 2 Shick Quattros in the mail before, as well as a Venus).

Call 1-888-PRUEBA1 (1-888-778-3221). Press 2 for English.

Free Fresco Taco from Taco Bell (I've tried these, they're great and they're only 150 calories!)

50 Free Prints from CVS Photo

Those are the best for today. Ah, I love free :)

I did it! I finished! I read 50 books in 2009!!

Book 001
A Wedding in December by Anita Shreve

Description: At an inn in the Berkshire Mountains, seven former schoolmates gather to celebrate a wedding -- a reunion that becomes the occasion of astonishing revelations as the friends collectively recall a long-ago night that indelibly marked each of their lives.

Status: Complete

Book 002
Angels & Demons by Dan Brown

Description: World-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to a Swiss research facility to analyze a cryptic symbol seared into the chest of a murdered physicist. What he discovers is unimaginable: a deadly vendetta against the Catholic Church by a centuries-old underground organization: the Illuminati. Desperate to save the Vatican from a powerful time bomb, Langdon joins forces in Rome with the beautiful and mysterious scientist Vittoria Vetra. Together they embark on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and the most secretive vault on earth... the long-forgotten Illuminati lair.

Status: Complete

Book 003
Dark Moon Defender by Sharon Shinn

Description: In this story of hidden magic and forbidden love, the King's Rider Justin befriends Ellynor, a young novice at a convent-only to discover that she is a mystic being manipulated by the fanatical Daughters of the Pale Moon into hunting down and killing other mystics.

Status: Complete

Book 004
Reader and Raelynx by Sharon Shinn

Description: In this novel of secret sorceries and forbidden desires, the mystic Cammon must put aside his personal feelings for Princess Amalie while he reads the souls of her suitors for any potential threats. But Cammon is unable to read Amalie, and he begins to suspect that she herself possesses magic powers-a revelation which would put her life in danger, and throw the kingdom into chaos.

Status: Complete

Book 005
The Dark Mirror (Bridei Chronicles Book 1) by Juliet Marillier

Description: Bridei is a young nobleman fostered at the home of Broichan, one of the most powerful druids in the land. But something happens that will change Bridei's world forever...and possibly wreck all of Broichan's plans. For Bridei finds a child on their doorstep on a bitter MidWinter Eve, a child seemingly abandoned by the fairie folk. The two grow up together and as Bridei comes to manhood he sees the shy girl Tuala blossom into a beautiful woman. Broichan sees the same process and feels only danger...for Tuala could be a key part in Bridei's future...or could spell his doom.

Status: Complete

Book 006
Blade of Fortriu (Bridei Chronicles Book 2) by Juliet Marillier

Description: Bridei is determined to drive the Gaelic invaders from his lands once and for all. And so, with his land secure and his house in order, he prepares for war. One of Bridei’s plans to win the war to come involves the beautiful young Ana. And so she will travel north, to make a strategic marriage with a chieftain she has never seen, in the hopes of gaining an ally on whom Bridei’s victory relies.

Status: Complete

Book 007
The Well of Shades (Bridei Chronicles Book 3) by Juliet Marillier

Description: King Bridei is a man with a mission. His wish to unite his kingdom seems almost within his grasp but there are forces working to undo his dream. He sends Faolan, his most trusted advisor (who is also a master assassin and spymaster) out into the world to ferret out the truth of who is friend and who is foe. Along the way Faolan will uncover many truths. Some may hold the key to Bridei's future. But more important, they may unlock the secrets that Faolan has held deep within his soul for decades. And offer him the chance of redemption.

Status: Complete

Book 008
Watchers of Time by Charles Todd

Description: The year is 1919, and Ian Rutledge is a fragile yet courageous former soldier searching for his place in a postwar world. Now a Scotland Yard investigator, Rutledge is called upon to probe a small-town murder — and discovers that it may be connected to one of the greatest disasters of all time....

Status: Complete

Book 009
The Face by Dean Koontz

Description: In The Face, Dean Koontz delivers yet another spellbinding and chilling novel, where real and imagined monsters walk the streets, ghosts travel through mirrors, and the devil makes house calls. Stalked by both real and supernatural evil, the bright and sensitive Fric, virtually orphaned by his A-list Hollywood parents, and the brave but disillusioned former detective Ethan Truman, himself suffering from the loss of his wife, must rely on their wits and each other to escape a dark and disturbing fate.

Status: Complete

Book 010
Body Surfing by Anita Shreve

Description: The beach house in New Hampshire which figured in Anita Shreve's The Pilot's Wife, Fortune's Rocks, and Sea Glass is once again featured in Body Surfing. This time, it is the summer home of the Edwards family, Anna and Mark and daughter Julie. Mrs. Edwards has great hopes for Julie, who is "slow," so she hires Sydney to tutor her, in preparation for her senior year. There are two older brothers, Jeff and Ben, whose arrival changes the household dynamic considerably.

Status: Complete

Book 011
Reversible Errors by Scott Turow

Description: Arthur Raven, more versed in corporate law than criminal defense, is not eager to accept the court-appointed task of handling death-row inmate "Squirrel" Gandolph's last-minute appeal of his murder conviction. But when evidence surfaces that might exonerate his client, he rises to the occasion with a quiet determination to see justice done.

Status: Complete

Book 012
State of Fear by Michael Crichton

Description: In Paris, a physicist dies after performing a laboratory experiment for a beautiful visitor. In the jungles of Malaysia, a mysterious buyer purchases deadly cavitation technology, built to his specifications. In Vancouver, a small research submarine is leased for use in the waters off New Guinea. And in Tokyo, an intelligence agent tries to understand what it all means.

Status: Complete

Book 013
The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks

Description: Long ago, the wars of the ancient Evil had ruined the world and forced mankind to compete with many other races--gnomes, trolls, dwarfs, and elves. But in peaceful Shady Vale, half-elfin Shea Ohmsford knew little of such troubles. And on Shea rested the hope of all the races.

Status: Complete

Book 014
The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks

Description: The ancient tree created by long-lost Elven magic, is dying. When Wil Ohmsford is summoned to guard the Amberle on a perilous quest to gather a new seed for a new tree, he is faced with the Reaper, the most fearsome of all Demons. And Wil is without power to control them....

Status: Complete

Book 015
The Wishsong of Shannara by Terry Brooks

Description: Horror stalked the Four Lands as the Ildatch, ancient source of evil, sent its ghastly Mord Wraiths to destroy Mankind. Only Brin Ohmsford held the magic power of wishsong that could make plants bloom instantly or turn trees from green to autumn gold. But she, too, was in mortal danger....

Status: Complete

Book 016
Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin

Description: Meet Rachel White, a young attorney living and working in Manhattan. Rachel has always been the consummate good girl -- until her thirtieth birthday, when her best friend Darcy throws her a party. That night, after too many drinks, Rachel ends up in bed with Darcy's fiance. Although she wakes up determined to put the one-night fling behind her, Rachel is horrified to discover that she has genuine feelings for the one guy she should run from. As the September wedding date nears, Rachel knows she has to make a choice. In doing so, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren't always neat, and sometimes you have to risk all to win true happiness.

Status: Complete

Book 017
Something Blue by Emily Giffin

Description: Darcy's neat, perfect world turns upside down when her best friend, Rachel White, the plain-Jane "good girl", steals her fiance, while Darcy finds herself completely alone for the first time in her life... with a baby on the way. Darcy tries to recover, feeling to her childhood friend living in London and resorting to her tried-and-true methods for getting what she wants. But as she attempts to re-create her glamorous life on a new continent, Darcy finds that her rules no longer apply.

Status: Complete

Book 018
The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl

Description: Boston, 1865. A series of murders, all of them inspired by scenes in Dante’s Inferno. Only an elite group of America’s first Dante scholars—Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russell Lowell, and J. T. Fields—can solve the mystery. With the police baffled, more lives endangered, and Dante’s literary future at stake, the Dante Club must shed its sheltered literary existence and find the killer.

Status: Complete

Book 019
The Big Bad Wolf by James Patterson

Description: Alex Cross' family is in terrible danger--at the same time that his new job with the FBI brings him the scariest case of his career. A team of kidnappers has been snatching successful, upstanding men and women right before their families' eyes. Alex's knowledge of the D.C. streets, together with his unique insights into criminal psychology, make this case one that only he can solve...

Status: Complete

Book 020
London Bridges by James Patterson

Description: Alex Cross is back--and so is the Big Bad Wolf. Terrorists have seized the worlds largest cities. London, Washington, DC, New York, and Frankfurt will be destroyed, unless their demands are met--and their demands are impossible. After a city in the western United States is fire bombed--a practice run--Alex Cross knows that it is only a matter of time before the bombers threats to the other cities are brutally executed.

Book 021
Mary Mary by James Patterson

Description: FBI agent Alex Cross is on vacation with his family at Disneyland when he gets a call from the Director. A well-known actress was shot outside her home in Beverly Hills. Shortly afterward, an editor for the Los Angeles Times receives an e-mail describing the murder in vivid detail. Alex quickly learns that this is not an isolated incident. The killer, known as Mary Smith, has done this before and plans to kill again. Right from the beginning, this case is like nothing Alex has ever confronted.

Status: Complete

Book 022
Cross by James Patterson

Description: Alex Cross reopens the case of his wife's death...

Status: Complete

Book 023
Double Cross by James Patterson

Description: A spate of elaborate murders in Washington D.C. have the whole East Coast on edge. Here, they chat about what's new at The Londoner, the glossy fashion magazine where they all work, and everything else that's going on in their lives. Or almost everything. Returning to her hometown of Cypress Springs, Louisiana, Avery desperately searches for answers. Instead she hears whispered rumors of strange happenings, of neighbors who go missing in the night. Written from the point of view of 30-year-old Nicky as she recalls the vivid images of that fateful December, her tale is one of love and courage, of tragedy and redemption, and of the ways in which the human heart always seeks to heal itself.

Status: Completed

Book 042
Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer

Description: As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger.

Status: Completed

Book 043
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

Description: On her way home from school on a snowy December day in 1973, 14-year-old Susie Salmon is lured into a makeshift underground den in a cornfield and brutally raped and murdered. Solzhenitsyn

Description: The simply told story of a typical, grueling day of the titular character's life in a labor camp in Siberia, is a modern classic of Russian literature and quickly cemented Solzhenitsyn's international reputation upon publication in 1962. It is painfully apparent that Solzhenitsyn himself spent time in the gulags--he was imprisoned for nearly a decade as punishment for making derogatory statements about Stalin in a letter to a friend.

Status: Completed

Book 046
The Magician's Nephew (Chronicles of Narnia, #1) by C.S. The year is 1959 and the place is the Belgian Congo. Nathan, a Baptist preacher, has come to spread the Word in a remote village reachable only by airplane. To say that he and his family are woefully unprepared would be an understatement. But of course it isn't long before they discover that the tremendous humidity has rendered the mixes unusable, their clothes are unsuitable, and they've arrived in the middle of political upheaval as the Congolese seek to wrest independence from Belgium.

Status: Completed

Book 050
We Thought You Would Be Prettier: True Tales of the Dorkiest Girl Alive by Laurie Notaro

Description: She thought she’d have more time. From the kid at the pet-food store checkout line whose coif is so bizarre it makes her seethe “I’m going to kick his hair’s ass!” to the hapless Sears customer-service rep on the receiving end of her Campaign of Terror, no one is safe from Laurie’s wrath. Her cranky side seems to have eaten the rest of her–inner-thigh Chub Rub and all.
I found this on another LJ back in August and decided to take up this challenge. I started reading in earnest in August, so I'm truly racing for the finish line, here. Just one book away!

Here, they chat about what's new at The Londoner, the glossy fashion magazine where they all work, and everything else that's going on in their lives. Or almost everything. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear.

Status: Completed

Book 039
New Moon by Stephenie Meyer

Description: The "star-crossed" lovers theme continues as Bella and Edward find themselves facing new obstacles, including a devastating separation, the mysterious appearance of dangerous wolves roaming the forest in Forks, a terrifying threat of revenge from a female vampire and a deliciously sinister encounter with Italy's reigning royal family of vampires, the Volturi.

Status: Completed

Book 040
In Silence by Erica Spindler

Description: Journalist Avery Chauvin is devastated when she receives word of her father's suicide.
Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince Review

Obviously this contains tons of spoilers.

It’s taken me nearly a week to really come to a conclusion about what I thought about the new Harry Potter movie. Having loved this book (and the series as a whole), it’s always hard for me to figure out whether I’m enjoying the movie because I’m in love with the Harry Potter series (and so by extension, anything that has to do with it), or because it’s actually a good movie-going experience.

This is the first HP movie I was apprehensive about seeing. There are some pretty intense scenes in the book that a PG rating just can’t cover. But once you get over that hurdle, the movie, from a purely movie-goer standpoint, is a good one. It’s adventurous, it’s witty, it’s entertaining, and that’s all I ever ask from a movie. But it doesn’t hold up when you compare it to the books. This is the first of the movies I’ve ever had a problem with. I don’t really know why, except I think they poorly handled the two most emotionally charged (for me, anyway) scenes in the book.

The one scene that I actually wanted to see, the one scene that I thought would make or break this movie for me, was the scene within the caves. I cannot get through that part of the book without crying my eyes out (and once embarrassed myself on a plane by doing just that). It started off on the right foot – a sweeping pan of Dumbledore and Harry in front of the caves, the waves crashing and the music haunting. The atmosphere is tense as they descend into the cave, avoiding the waters and eventually rowing slowly across. I’ll even give the filmmakers a break for not making the boat trip more dramatic. It’s after Dumbledore drinks his first mouthful that the movie loses me. The dynamic between Dumbledore and Harry deserves better than what happens next in the movies. There are no tears, there is no pain etched within their faces (except, perhaps, Dumbledore who is, in fact, in some pain), there is no heart wrenching cruelty in what they are doing to each other -- Harry causing Dumbledore excruciating pain, Dumbledore causing Harry excruciating heartache. It’s a short montage of Dumbledore looking old and pained and saying No, and once “KILL ME”, and Harry looking nervous and a bit upset. This, for me, was the most emotionally driven part of the books. There is a father-son aspect to these two characters, and it’s absolutely horrifying to watch (or read, rather) one causing so much pain to the other, while the other is reduced to nothing. I feel like the movie shortchanged this interaction. Perhaps it was too dark for their PG audience. So why not up that rating to a PG-13 and show some real emotion, real pain? They give this scene the shaft while moving on to the much more exciting Inferi.

I was willing to give the filmmakers another chance in the form of Dumbledore’s death. Fine, you may have given my favorite scene the short end of the stick, but how will you handle the climax of this story? In the words of my boyfriend (who is not a book reader, nor a huge fan), “It’s like the filmmakers asked themselves, how can we take this and suck all of the drama out of it? How can we make it as bland as possible?” Because that’s exactly what they did.

It also bothered me that they tinged the way that Dumbledore says those two words, (“Severus. Please.”) with the knowledge of what comes next. As readers, we don’t know how these words are intoned, we only hear it from Harry's point of view. In the book, it is described as pleading -- "The sound frightened Harry beyond anything he had experienced all evening. For the first time, Dumbledore was pleading." In the movie, Dumbledore sounds as if he's asking Severus for release, rather than pleading for his life (which is, in fact, what he is asking, though we don't know this as readers/viewers yet). For me, that is giving the viewers way too much of a hint about Snape's intentions. When I told this to my boyfriend, he said he didn't know what I was talking about. But still, it bothered me.

The attack on the Weasley home also gets to me. It wasn’t in the book, and it wasn’t necessary except to break up the flow of the movie and insert a random action scene for the sake of an action scene (and, yes, I’ve read that the writers added it so they could make Voldemort’s attacks on the wizarding world more real to Harry, and no, I don’t think that’s a good enough reason). If you want to throw in an action scene, why not throw in the one at the end, between the Death Eaters, the Order, and the DA? Now that would have been a great scene for a movie. I can kind of see how showing the destruction of the Hogwarts grounds immediately after Dumbledore’s death would have cemented his death and added to the loss (which is what is done in the film). Fine, I’ll give you that. It also makes Harry’s charge after Snape that much more intense. Sure. But wouldn’t it have been even more intense after he sees them attack his friends and their familes? I just don’t see why they swapped one action scene for another, when one was not only superior, but was actually written in the book.

But as a movie-goer, I would say it was an entertaining experience, and that's all I can ask for, really. I just wish it had been both entertaining, and true to the story that I love.

Thoughts?

Yahoo! Mail managed to lower themselves on the free mail totem pole (in my opinion anyway) by posting this spoof of Gandalf and Frodo using Yahoo! Mail.

I guess it could be funny, but I'm pmsing and missing my fandom, so mostly it just makes me want to hate on Yahoo! Mail.

If that pissed you off, trying watching this video from the beginning of the fandom madness.

Happy Halloween!

There will be pictures from tonight's festivities, probably friends locked :) But for now, here's what I was talking about earlier:

<lj-embed id="1" />

How cute is Regis?? And Kelly was so good, I actually forgot today was Halloween and thought that Victoria was guest hosting... it was early in the morning so that might have helped too :)

I happened to turn on the TV while getting ready just now and the Backstreet Boys were performing on Regis and Kelly! I had a flashback to my fangirl days when I would pop in the nearest vhs and record everything they ever did on TV and then watch it over and over with my sister and moan about how cute they were. Ah those were the days :)

They sounded a bit eh though, and AJ looked a bit chunkier... guess that's cuz he's not on drugs anymore. And Regis was dressed as Beckham and Kelly was dressed as Posh and it was adorable! Regis even had his hair all flipped up in the front and dyed blond. I'll have to try to find a YouTube video or picture of it, you just have to see it!

And just for the hell of it:

What it's like to be me - Britney Spears feat.
Nuns, the internet, and donkeys

As part of my theology class, we're required to volunteer 2 hours a week within the South Bend community, and I chose to volunteer at the St. Mary's convent, a convent for retired nuns and assisted living. I originally chose it because it was the only place I could get to (the free bus goes there from campus and I don't have a car so I couldn't get anywhere else). But after Tuesday's visit, I'm really glad that I went.

Lee Ann, the volunteer coordinator, asked me to spend an hour with Sister Mary Byrnes after I was done helping Sister Valeria in the library. I agreed and went with Lee Ann to meet Sister Mary Byrnes. And she was wonderful. She was everything I didn't expect-- a fast talker, sharp mind, solid, continuous, and interesting conversation-- and she was fantastic. The hour actually went really quickly. And she gave me a greeting card she had made by herself (it's actually really pretty, not what you would expect from an 80 year-old woman), and she just made my day.

She walked me back down to the first floor so that I could check out with Lee Ann and get back home, and Lee Ann told me to sit down to debrief me. And she completely broke my heart. She told me that Sister Mary Byrnes was very active within the convent (she folded the laundry for the other women, she liked to make greeting cards, she could make balloon animals, she was sewing some pants for another nun when I was with her) but she was a loner and had no real friends in the convent. Her biological sister, also a nun, lived there too, and was very forceful and controlling with her and it upset Sister Mary Byrnes but she would go along with her just to keep the peace. So she asked me if I would be willing to keep visiting Sister. How can you say no to that? But she just broke my heart because this wonderful, sweet woman didn't have anybody to spend her time with.

In other news, my dad asked me to build a website for a company he's starting and I completely forgot how much I love to build websites. Sure, I've never had my own domain (though I've wanted one since I was 11, so for 10 years), and sure, the last real website I had published on the internet was a Backstreet Boys fan fiction site (don't ask, I'm already embarassed), but I've never really stopped making websites, even if I don't put them anywhere other than my harddrive. If I could make a living building websites I would do it, but I don't think I could right now, not without some sort of portfolio. Instead, I've continued to interview on campus left and right in hopes that someone will hire me. I also got a second interview with Morningstar as a Product Consultant... even though I'm not really sure what I would be consulting on. I'm sure they'd let me know :)

Also, since my midterms week has been rather void of midterms (no complaints!), I've also been playing more Donkey Kong than I should. Tom let me have his Nintendo 64 so we would have something to do when he comes to my room (cuz otherwise, it's the smallest, most cramped dorm room you've ever seen), and I'm addicted to Donkey Kong. And I end up playing for six hours when I meant to play for thirty minutes, it's terrible.

Fall Break is Sunday! Woohoo! And it couldn't come at a more needed time.

my ridiculous senior year

So, I'd planned to be more on LJ than I had before because I thought that my senior year of college was going to be a breeze. 13 credits, no problem.

I was so wrong.

Sure, I'm only taking 5 classes (one of which was one credit and ended last Wednesday, so 4 classes technically), but I'm also working two jobs (student assistant in the Annual Fund...not as glamorous as it sounds; student athlete tutor), volunteering for a class (two hours a week at the convent for retired nuns and assisted living), interviewing like mad to try to find a job, and going to all of the meet and greets and information sessions required for the interview. So I'm pretty much busy at all hours of the day, every day. It's exhausting, but it kinda feels good to be so productive. I'm such a loser :)

The job hunt is going well, though I don't actually know where I want to end up. I've interviewed with the following people:

-Office Max (corporate sales)
-Steve & Barry's (in-house marketing)
-Liberty Mutual (associate portfolio analyst)
-GE Healthcare (corporate sales)
-General Mills (marketing)
-Target (Merchandise Planning)
-Target (Sourcing)
-Accenture (consulting)
-Nationwide (consulting)
-Morningstar (consulting)
-AT&T Mobility (corporate sales)
-Whirlpool (corporate sales)
-Epic Systems Corp. (this one's on Wed. as a project manager)
-CAST Management Consultants (on Thurs, consulting obviously)
-Cleveland Research Company (marketing research)

Of these, only Liberty Mutual, Target (Sourcing), and General Mills look good, and I'd love any of those jobs. It's too early to tell from AT&T down through the list, but I'd rather do something other than sales, especially since all of those companies want me to relocate every 1-2 years. Yikes.

It's kind of stressful knowing that my decisions now will affect my future for at least the next few years. This isn't just a summer job--I'm not quitting in two months. So, it's kind of a big deal. But there's this little part of me that's super excited that it's actually real, that I'll be a real adult soon. Not a partial adult where I still live under the rules of my parents and the University.

And every now and then I feel like crying because I'm realizing that everything is over. The entire Notre Dame experience is over. And it's been the best time of my life, literally. I was watching a movie for class the other day (a documentary, My American Girls: A Dominican Story, it's actually pretty good) and there was a girl graduating from college in it and I literally had to stop looking at the screen because I was tearing up so badly. I love college. I can't believe it's ending.

In other news, I've started watching Heroes and have decided that it's probably the best show on TV right now. Can't wait til tomorrow night!

♥ all of you!

Huh...

After finally realizing that there was no other alternative, I made my way down to the Executive Tans in our neighborhood to try to rid my body of the most horrible tan lines I've ever had. I had never been to a tanning booth before and had only heard the horror stories about how grimy and dirty and deadly they were, so I went in expecting the worst.

In all actuality, it was quite pleasant. It was clean, the lady at the front was very friendly and helpful, and it was relaxing to lay in the heat (albeit man-made heat).

However, I believe I have burned my ass, since it is the only part of my body that has never seen the sun. I can't tell you how attractive my bright red ass is. It's a perfect shade of lobster red. Yum.

And, sadly, there seems to be no improvement on my tan lines (though it's been less than an hour and I can't really expect much to happen from my first foray into the tanning salon).

Also, I left my subwoofer, my baby, at some ghetto looking audio repair with a man who wasn't very nice. But he said he could fix it, so... I guess it's worth it. I just hope it comes back truly fixed and not a half-ass fix that will last me a year.

Still no paycheck. Weird, seeing as it's been two weeks since I requested that it be mailed. Managers were called and they are none the wiser as to its location. That sucks.

But! I'm so excited to go back to school. As in, can't wait, I'm packing now and already have plans for my first three nights there. I just want this week to go faster. Except that means I graduate even sooner, so, I don't really want that either.

Hope everyone's summer went well!

Wow

I got tagged in lexy_'s meme, so here it be (with a real post to follow soon, I promise):

Rules:
Each player of this game starts off with 10 weird things/habits/little-known facts about yourself. People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 10 weird habits/things/little known facts as well as state this rule clearly. At the end you need to choose 10 people to be tagged and list their names. No tag backs.

1. I find that the best way to sort things out is by writing, because I can organize my thoughts better that way.
1a. I happened to sort through some seriously hard things these past few weeks in several privated entries in my LJ, and I can't tell you how much better it feels now.

2. I don't think I like living with people, particularly roommates. I can like you a ton, but I just don't want to live with you.
2a. This is not to say that I can't live well with a future spouse, because honestly, when I like you that much, I want to be around you all the time.
2b. Sometimes this is a problem.

3. We've moved about 6-8 times in the past 6 years and I love it.
3a. It's also created problems with how I make and keep friends. Because I don't tend to keep them. And then I wish I had.

4. Even though I really like my major (Marketing) and I'm enjoying school, I think I'd be a terrible marketer, and I'm terrified of failing. I don't honestly know if I can make it as a marketer, that I'd be so much better at being a receptionist, because I excel at organization. I just pray that I can be good at something to do with my major.

5. I didn't believe her when she said "You never know till you get there." And then I got there. I believe her now. And I'm sorry.

6. I always tend to think I'm happier now than I was before, but this time I really believe it. I'm happier now than I was before :)

So.... that makes me sound like a huge downer. But honestly, I am very happy right now. A little scared about what's to come in the next few years, but I'm really happy. I'm not really sure if anyone reads this journal anymore, so I won't tag anyone, but if you want to leave me a few facts about yourself in the comments, please do :)

Wow, it's been absolutely forever since I last updated! I have since gone back and read most if not all of yall's posts, though rarely commented, seeing as reading took me a long time. One of my resolutions was to keep updated with Livejournal like I used to, because I miss all of you!

Hopefully I will have a longer update later, but I just wanted to say hi and happy (belated) new year!

Tomorrow morning at 5:30 I will be leaving in a cramped car with my family for my third year at school. I have waited all summer for this, so I'm so freaking excited. And also, I will be MIA for the next few days.

I'll definitely try to post more this year than I did last year.
It's been a while....

On Friday my sister and I headed down to Houston to visit family (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents) and it was fabulous. I hadn't seen everybody since January, but then I only got to see them for two days, so it was a really nice mini vacation. My little cousin (who happened to turn 9 on Sunday and is just such a sweetheart) was reading Harry Potter and she was really excited about it, and was asking all sorts of questions about what happens in the other books. It was so cute to see someone getting excited about Harry Potter. Friday night we went out to some restaurant called Cheddar's and drank wine and got tipsy with my aunts, then continued the fun back at my aunt's house with a few beers. I had never drank in front of my family before and it was so much fun. I found out a lot of things about my mom when she was younger that would never have been told if they hadn't been tipsy.

And, I want an accent like my family's. It's so cute and slight and I want one.

Also, I now have two jobs for the semester. One as a TA for a Calculus I class...that should be ok, but I thought it was gonna be easier because I was going to be a grader...oh well. And I'm also working at a child care center 5 days a week, which I'm really excited about because I love kids so it should be fun. However, I'm just a little nervous about homework load and working at the same time, but we'll see.

And now I'm going to return to packing up stuff for school. Only 4 more days!

Dallas and such

Wow, I suck at updating. I've had the internet steadily for a while now, I just haven't gotten around to posting, though I've checked my flist every five seconds :)

Saturday we went wandering around and drove over to Rockwall and checked out houses, ate lunch at Chili's, had dessert at Steak 'n Shake, and walked through some gorgeous model homes (one of which featured both Aaron Carter and Orlando Bloom photos on a bedroom dresser). Then on Sunday, my grandparents from my mother's side decided to pay us a surprise visit. It turned out ok, though we weren't too happy at first about the surprise (we had wanted to relax, so when they called from about 10 minutes away, it killed that plan). They took us shopping yesterday and decided to drop over $100 on clothes for both me and my sister for back to school, which was awesome. So now I have some cute clothes and my favorite jeans from Express, yay! We also visited my aunt and uncle since apparently they only live about 40 minutes away. It was slightly awkward since we're not particularly close with their family (haven't seen them in years and they're extremely religious and are the type to force it on you) but it was nice seeing them and the two youngest boys, who are adorable. (My 9 year-old cousin detailed for us how he is well liked by all 8 girls in his grade and how he likes to go through them and say, "Nope, you're out. Eh, you're a maybe. Yeah, I'll save you for the finals..." in the cute way that only 9-year-olds can say without sounding cocky.)

Today was more grandparents and situating of the apartment. My back is really sore from all the lifting, because I suck and lift with my back instead of my legs even though I know I'm not supposed to. But! I had a Jack in the Box today and talked to Tom for 3+ hours, so it's all ok :)

Dallas!

I am officially a Texan again. You have no idea how good that feels.

We drove all day yesterday (Monday) and crossed the Texas state line sometime around 7:30, stopped for the inaugural Whataburger meal at around 9:30 in Amarillo and finally made it to Dallas around 5 am Tuesday morning. It was slow going because there was so much wind that the Turtle on top of the car I was driving kept causing the car to be nearly bowled over. It was slightly scary.

The first day in Texas was spent shopping. Found a HUGE warehouse full of jewelry, purses, bags, etc called Sam Moon and got a pair of earrings and wandered the mall before buying some essentials at Walmart and getting Chili's to go. Came back to the house and watched That Thing You Do while eating and then had the house in an uproar over a MASSIVE roach that dissapeared somewhere into the kitchen. My dad is on a business trip so of course there's no one brave enough to try to find and/or kill it. And now we're all terrified to sleep because we have no furniture right now so we'll be sleeping on the floor and we have no idea where this effing roach is and eww eww eww.

But anyway! Yay for moving!

Really quick post while I have internet access...we are currently in the process of moving from Denver to Dallas. The moving trailer was packed and the company picked it up today. We're staying with my sister until the place in Dallas is ready for us to move in, and we'll leave Monday and do a straight shot drive to Dallas. So I won't be on very much for about the next week or so, and by then, I'll be back in Texas! You have no idea how excited I am :)

Love you all!

So yesterday....

Tom calls me in the middle of the day (he never calls in the middle of the day so I kinda thought something was up) and I was like, Hi! How are you? And he says, Not doing really good. And I said, Why? What's up? And he says, Uh, my car is no more. I say, Oh babe I'm sorry. And he says, You have no idea.

He goes on to tell me that his car blew up on the freeway on the way home from New Jersey. First I said "WHAT????" and then I cried. He said that he started to notice smoke in his rearview mirror and thought maybe the smoke was coming from the back of the car. Turns out that it was coming from the front, only the car was going so fast the wind was blowing it back, making it look like it was coming from the rear. So he and his friends got out and didn't really know what to do. Soon enough, after it was called in and the police arrived, the bottom of the car began to melt away from the body of the car, the tires blew, and the whole front half of the car was engulfed in flames. The right lane of the freeway was shut down and the fire truck came to put out the car. Luckily no one was hurt.

He's so so upset about it though and I feel so bad. He bought and paid for that car and worked his ass off for the money to pay for it and it was his first car and now there's nothing left of it. The car wasn't worth much so there wasn't comprehensive insurance on the car, meaning he won't get anything for it and insurance will only pay for the tow ride to the auto shop, not anything that was done in the auto shop (though I don't think the auto shop could have done anything). I feel awful for him. I really just want to hug him but, alas, he's in Cleveland and I'm still in Denver. I started looking up cars on Craigslist, though, because I couldn't think of anything else to do (not that there is anything for me to do, but I just felt like doing something so I didn't feel so useless).

Anyway, MUSE CONCERT TODAY! So excited! Going early so we can be the first in line so we can be in the front (cuz I'm short and won't be able to see much otherwise). Pictures will hopefully be posted tomorrow :)

It's kind of sad looking around your room and seeing everything in boxes...for the fifth time in six years. We move quite a bit, so I've gotten used to the changing and stuff, but it's still kind of weird seeing everything in boxes. Then again, I can't wait to leave, to get back home to Texas, so really, I'm not too sad :)

MUSE CONCERT IN 2 DAYS! So excited for that! There will be many pictures (hopefully, depending on whether or not I can get in with a camera) and also videos, though sadly, my camera does not take videos with sound. I, however, was under the impression that it did take sound when I bought the thing so, needless to say, I was quite pissed.

And: scarlett_daily. Go check it out :)
