Identifying Marks:

Rin is a fairly average girl, without many significant scars or extremely identifying features that she cannot hide. However, she does have some distinctive marks. One is a scar low on the left side of her belly, located in such a way that it might be mistaken for something left over from a C-section. It's quite faint.

General Appearance:

Refer to her icons, for the most part - Rin is generally an attractive and fine-featured girl. Her dark hair is usually pulled either into twin braids with rings at the end, or pulled away from her face in a bun or nowadays in a ponytail or clip. She lets it down rarely, and appears to be somewhat older when her hair is loose. She's slender, but underestimating her strength or endurance because of her small size and apparent lack of muscle would be a mistake. She's stronger than she looks, heavier than she looks, and quicker than she looks.

Usually, in the Port, she can be found in modern dress, tending to long skirts and leggings, blouses, some t-shirts and sweaters and sweatshirts to pull over them. She dresses somewhat conservatively, aiming for comfort, often with layers. She has slender fingers and hands that are a little scarred up, not unattractively so but souvenirs from practicing sword work (although she's not all that great at it).

Generally, Rin is very expressive, as well - her body is basically one big emoticon, and for characters who are skilled at reading emotional in most situations she's an open book. Her eyes are large and intensely expressive. Under pressure, however, she can become much more opaque, and her time in St.Edelweiss has left her far more avoidant, less likely to make eye contact or stand confidently. Generally, she moves diffidently, preferring to fly under the radar and not really be noticed by others (close scrutiny is unnerving to her). She does her best to walk like she knows where she's going even if she doesn't actually. When angry, her posture improves.

Voice:

See this for her English voice. Rin comes in at about 3:20.

Powers:

Rin has no native powers besides those given to her by the Core. This power is the power of stealth - not necessarily the same as invisibility, though it can be expressed the same way.

What does this mean?
Basically, it means that Rin can go invisible - but at its height, her power is more than that. It's not merely that she turns herself invisible. What her power relies on is strong psychic misdirection, a don't look at me impulse that she broadcasts more or less according to her will (at least these days). It's backed up by her willpower, which is considerable, and she's honed it considerably since she first discovered the whole thing thanks to Shiroe. At times, before he made her aware she was going invisible, she would actually trigger her power without being aware of it.

As it grows more potent, her power will develop as well into more than a simple visual misdirection: it's a psychic shield and misdirection as well, impelling those who might have sensors out and even those who might be searching for her to skim right over her without realizing what they're doing. Eventually, the stealth power will extend to this psychic shield, as well as suppressing her from other kinds of sensing with the same misdirection impulse.
What are the limitations of this power?
Well, the one that's simplest to explain: machines and machine sensing aren't susceptible to psychic misdirections. A security camera will still pick up her presence, and someone watching a feed of said camera after the fact will still see her. Adding that step of remove that technology gives an observer is a real hindrance to Rin.

Otherwise, limitations come down in large part to the will of the person searching for Rin, whatever foreknowledge they might have of her location or presence, and how many people (as well as how strong are the wills) of those who are looking for her. Stealth is her power, but that doesn't necessarily mean she can just stand out in the open lazing around while ten people determinedly look for her and be just fine. Her determination is exceptional, but Rin is not the only person in the Port with a strong personality. Even one very determined person looking for her can cause problems with her power.

To expand a bit more on this, intention also makes a difference when someone is looking for her. If even a strongwilled person has no idea that she's present in the area, they won't be looking for her, and her psychic no-fly zone would probably just skim them over her. Again, if a strongwilled person was looking for her, and she was nowhere near them, even if she had the stealth up it wouldn't necessarily make a difference to the overall strain she felt or the effectiveness of her cloak. The equation comes down to determination and distance in a lot of cases.

Besides this, using the stealth power for long periods at a time is a mental strain for her as well. To use it to strongest affect, she has to concentrate on the power, and eventually it becomes taxing. She can't sleep or really allow herself to become preoccupied with too many other things while she's carrying on the stealth power.

Combat Proficiency & Tactics:

In all honesty, Rin... kind of sucks. At swordwork. She'd probably be way better off going into kickboxing or something.

That said, she IS quite quick on her feet, resilient, and determined - at one point in canon, she gets her shoulders dislocated like three times in a row and keeps on trucking. She's also the kind of girl who'll dislocate her own thumb to escape being tied up to go on to help her bodyguard. She's slender, but the girl can take a beating.

Rin IS distinct in the series in that she usually carries something of a small arsenal into battle, in the form of her throwing knives (though she gets called out on the attack being fairly ineffective, and it's a valid criticism).

At the Port, she's building up a small collection of knives and sharp goodies yet again. When casually out on her own, she usually has some concealed weaponry on her person. When at school or work, she goes unarmed, as generally it's... frowned upon to be armed... at school or work.

Special Items:

Her family heirloom sword Kutoneshirika, received at Christmas. The scabbard is golden and carved ornately. It's not very sharp, and currently she pretty much lets it sit safe in her room at the boarding house.

Employment:

Maid work at Uzushio Ryokan in Sector 6. She likes it well enough; the pay is good and it gives her something to concentrate on. She carries knives concealed evil while on the job.

Living Situation:

Minako's boarding house! In Sector 4, where she also goes to school. She likes living here and being around other people her own age a lot. As of Minako's death, the boarding house has been left to Rin.

Schedule:

High school in the mornings! I'm going based off of my own experience; school starting at 7:30, and ending at two. After that, afternoon shift at Uzushio. She's usually worn out by the end of the day, but still has time to wander around, do things, and get into trouble somehow between all that.

Body Language:

Self-contained. Rin does not go out of her way to draw attention. She carries herself well but tends to avoid eye contact, and will become tense under direct, sustained, intense scrutiny. For people who are skilled at reading others, she's a highly expressive person and generally an open book as well. Tension can be read in her hands and her shoulders as well as just her face.

Personality Sketch:

A crouching moron hidden badass, budding determinator and practitioner of waif fu on a good day, Asano Rin is also genuinely a nice girl. Expatriate from a canon with a strongly black-and-grey morality, she's also not necessarily as nice as she seems.

Rin is both deeply compassionate and forgiving of people (she can't even kill Anotsu, who ordered the deaths of her parents and let his men rape her mother, when he haw lockjaw - she helps him, instead) but there's also ruthless streak buried under the compassion: if someone she truly cares about is threatened, Rin can bring it to the table.

Most everyone starts on a blank slate with her, and she's an intense observer of other people, always interested in how they're thinking and what makes them do what they do. Even killers have a chance to make a good impression on her; all the people Rin is closest to in canon have killed, after all. Everyone gets a chance with her, as bad as they might necessarily be. It means bad things happen to her sometimes, and it's not that Rin doesn't feel these things; she's intensely sensitive, actually. Everything hits her. Everything painful hurts her. But she's also deeply resilient and persistent, and has a lot of hope in people, in spite of talking pessimists' talk at times. She's adaptable and intelligent as well - not a perfect girl by any means, but with an amount of compassion that connects her to other people, be it fortunate or not for her personally.

Because she likes Edgeworth, and Sam is Edgeworth's friend, Rin has some concern for Sam as well, besides just liking him. She wants to see him get free again.

He claims to be a relative of Sasuke, which is what attracted Rin's attention in the first place. He's also her boss - Rin entered his employ mostly to keep an eye on him and see what kind of person he was for herself, and so far she's not really sure. He's smart, and she enjoys that; he's helped her, and she's grateful. But she's a wary girl these days and he seems like a man with an ulterior motive too. That's enough to keep her wary. She does like that he can take care of himself, though. It's nice to not have to worry about someone. He also manipulated her with genjutsu'd cherry trees, and although only innocent cuddling took place, Rin is MAD. Or maybe just her dignity is stinging. Time will tell.

A little boy who lives at Uzushio, apparently under Madara's care. Rin has not had much to do with him yet; so far she is basically completely neutral to him. Since at heart he is an evil little bastard, this might eventually change. Or not. The bugger's manipulative.

Handling:

Patience, kindness and persistence will prompt good responses from Rin. Surprisingly, though, the most important of these might be persistence: she's more withdrawn than she used to be, and it takes kind of repeatedly being prodded before she gets the idea that someone might want to talk to her.

She's honestly, desperately, miserably lonely, though, which doesn't help when she's so starved for company and people who'll talk to her, listen to her and challenge her that she'll take just about anyone who takes a kind-seeming interest in her. The extreme wariness reflects this - she knows she's emotionally vulnerable, and if there's one thing Rin hates, it's that. Being weak, being susceptible to manipulation. It doesn't do her a lick of good.

Wariness and the compulsive craving for company and human contact are the two forces right now that work at odds in her head. She's a tough girl, she'll figure the way through eventually, or at least find enough people that she finally will relax a bit. It's that or get an ulcer, probably, so let's hope it's the first.

After so long confined, even a larger cage is just like freedom. Rin is out from under the microscope, and that's enough to make her feel bizarre, and it's how she knows she was locked up too long in that godforsaken asylum: this feels like an escape.

It's not for real. It's not an escape, and it's not home; it's not even a safe place. AGI would lock her in a brothel. SERO would bring out the microscopes again. She still can't let down her guard, and who knows how many people here she can afford to trust? She doesn't know anyone, she doesn't know anything, this world is terrifying and too big for her.

Even with all that, she could scream with the relief and sob with shame because of those people who were still left behind.

She stays still for hours at a time, instead. She curls up under the bedcovers and lets silence percolate in her head, ringing hollowly behind her eyes. She figures out bathing and sits naked in front of the bathroom mirror until even with the heat wave she shivers, her skin too pale and scarred, her face gaunt, trying to recognize what she sees is herself.

She's lost weight. She looks like a ghost. She looks pathetic, and Rin doesn't realize how much until she's out one day and an older woman, someone of the age to be anyone's mother, with a lined, friendly face, presses a little gift on her. Rin looks between the woman and what she's been given, wondering if this lady with her round, somewhat lined, amiable face would have given it to her if she knew who Rin was. Or what, rather. One of the hated newcomers.

“This heat's murder, honey,” and it isn't said unkindly. “I think you ought to have something to drink, you look a little faint.”

The glass bottle (amazing) in her hands is icy cold and when Rin turns it in her hands, and little bubbles rise to the surface and pop while more collect on the side. She has to swallow around the lump in her throat. “I'm sorry. I'm just not used to it.”

“Well, none of us are,” and she'd peered at Rin quite kindly. “That ought to help.”

“...What is it?”

“Root beer, dear,” still amiable, amazing. “You never saw it before?”

Rin shakes her head, wondering whether she should give it back, or run. It could be poisoned. It could be anything. She doesn't know what root beer is.

There's no unkindness in the woman's face, but the distance is spotted, and in any other city or place she might just be a funny foreigner but here she's a newcomer, and unwelcome.

“Take it anyway.” It's a shame, these days, how she's surprised by kindness. The chill on the glass burns her hands. The woman nods are her. “Welcome to Siren's Port.”

She doesn't think longer. She takes it after all. It might be the one free thing she gets.

She's never had a pineapple before. It's a dusty thing, yellow with dust, yellow under the dust too. It's not easy to cut, because of its shape, not because it's very hard; it's not rotten, so she wonders where the dust came from. Surely if it was old enough to be dusty it would be rotten? Maybe it's just that it's been amongst all these moving and leaving things, and some of that dust shook off onto it. The little taste she tries before she puts it in the cold box is delicious. That must be it.

If she puts it away and waits to eat it, that will be even better. It's boiling hot, she doesn't hate it but she knows the contrast will be best. While she waits for it to cool she goes and stretches out on the covers, breathing and staring at the ceiling and thinking of nothing, pure clear nothing.

Two hours later she gets up. She got the pineapple for three dollars, she's not sure if that's a deal to be proud of or not. She goes anyway and takes it out of the cold box and puts it into the sink, and proceeds from there to decapitate it piecemeal.

It's so acidic it almost hurts to eat, with her bitten lips, the gnawed inside of her cheek. It's too good to stop. Juice slicks her fingers and burns the corners of her mouth. The flavor is so intense it's almost too strong entirely, she feels light-headed.

She finishes the whole fruit on her own, and even though it's sour enough that her stomach hurts since it was so empty and is still so unused to strong flavors, she swallows and keeps it down.

9/12/10.

I arrived here 8/9/10. It has been over a month.

Yesterday, I gave some papers to a man about St. Edelweiss. It may not be a good idea, but I felt different after I wrote them out, so maybe I will write more of these things out, for me. There's a great deal of things that I'd like to forget, and that have been forgotten for me, but there are many things that should be remembered. Someone should exist who remembered those things.

A man with long red hair. A leader. He was cut open and a rosary was tangled in his guts and sewed up there, to try and force secrets out of him, but he wouldn't speak.
A boy with short red hair and an eyepatch. He was funny, and roomed with someone very bad. He was reckless and I always had to worry. He seemed to lose himself near the end.
A boy with blond hair and green eyes. My friend. Angry. He forgot us. He was important.

Four siblings gutted and stuck on a wall, with another unrelated breathing amongst them, to fall down after two days. Simply to terrify us, I must now believe.
A man tortured on the intercom. Screaming. Terrifying.
Not allowed to speak my language.
Not enough to eat. Cold.

This world is such an open place. It's very different. People complain about the Pull, about the injustices here, and all I can think of is how much worse off we could be. None of them know how lucky they are.

I don't know if it's exactly fair to say that. People are taken to laboratories and used for experiments here, too. It's not a safe world, either. I suppose no world really is. Is it wrong, to be so relieved to have escaped? I hear about those people, and all I can think is "at least it's not me". I think I was close to failing there.

Matt died in the asylum, but he's here now. Maybe that means that all the other people who died in those rooms went to other worlds, too. I hope they're safe, somehow.

Yuffie is here now, but she just remembered it after being here for a long time. So is Jack.

The situation is strange.

What if everyone in this world was in St. Edelweiss beforehand too? What if they're all like Yuffie, the memories just aren't there somehow, and they might come back?

	Another man from St. Edelweiss, a patient promoted to staff. Rin and he weren't the closest of friends while they were in the asylum but they've gotten nearer to each other in the Port, aided by having some mutual understanding of what the other went through simply by dint of being there. Rin thinks of him as a good, brave man, though she worries for his recklessness, and she's very glad he's there and safe.

	Another from St. Edelweiss, and a rather constant source of worry for Rin, for his solitude, his tendency to fall into dark moods and brooding, his strange family members that keep turning up, his... everything. Sasuke is not stable and it prevents Rin from putting her trust in him entirely, but he is family of a sort and she does care for him deeply, and would go to his aide without hesitation. He's also teaching her sword work.

	A lawyer who helped her immediately upon arrival to the Port, and possibly identified as a former patient of St. Edelweiss, though he doesn't remember any time there (and Rin doesn't mind that. He's probably better off forgetting). He seems to work tirelessly in defense of newcomers, and he's been very kind and respectful to Rin, somehow managing to become one of her emotional anchors in the Port. She trusts him quite a bit for Rin, and has become quite forthcoming with him because of that.

	Shiroe→zealouspeter
	Frankly, Shiroe scares her a little - terror is her default state, but he even manages to sharpen it. He reminds her of someone she can't place, someone that she didn't trust, too smart to be comforting and too mean to seem reliable. Sometimes he can be okay, but more often he drives her into fits of silence. That, and he also draws out some of the emotion that she's working so hard to suppress, and that makes Rin uncomfortable. UPDATE: the nervousness and aggravation has softened somewhat now, as Shiroe has come to respect to a degree that she really doesn't like being pushed into corners, and they're... somehow a bit softer on each other, maybe? He's certainly inquisitive. Rin kind of wishes he'd stop trying to make her talk about stuff, but she doesn't regard him as a scummy brat any longer (at least, not completely). He's still really obnoxious.

	What a quiet boy. A smart one, too, and one of her immediate sources of assistance in the Port upon first arrival. He's not very demonstrative or forthcoming with personal details, but Rin actually does like him - he doesn't pry too much into stuff she doesn't want to talk about, but he's smart and good to have a conversation with. She plans to help him with investigation into the Port itself, too.

	He's either really strange, highly intelligent, or both. If Rin ever said this kind of thing she'd say he's fun to talk to. Since she doesn't, it's just an exercise in mental acuity, and in staying ready to run.

	She's nice! A female soldier? Well, that certainly piques Rin's curiosity. She seems sweet too, and Rin could certainly always use more friends.

	A newcomer, and a slave at Uzushio, which is where Rin met him. A kind man, though Rin feels sorry for him (and is sure he wouldn't really appreciate the sentiment, so she tries not to show it any too much). He helped when Madara got sick. She's interested in more conversation with him.

	Yosuke Hanamura→outbursting
	A nice boy! A fellow resident of Minako's boarding house! And someone who is going to help her explore the city. He seemed shaken by her suggestions about the unreality of home. Rin will remember to keep it toned down. He also has an interesting power known as a Persona, which Rin wants to see.

	Sirius Black→atrumcanis
	Jack's good friend and roommate, a tease and a troublemaker too, as well as a charmer who took her for a ride on his flying motorbike (fun when she wasn't having much of it - Rin remembers!). She's grateful for the good changes he's wrought in Jack, but concerned for the troubles they bring upon themselves and she thinks (privately, so far) that sometimes he gets a little bit unpleasant with the pranks. Overall, she does like him though, and general feelings are positive.

	Shock and glory, someone met in the Port that Rin considers to be a good friend. He has anger issues but he's always been kind and gentlemanly as these things go to her, so the point is moot to Rin - she trusts him, anyway, and is grateful for his conversation. She's a bit worried that he's seemed to attract some really unwanted attention from one of the companies, though...

[the following was written by Rin and delivered to Edgeworth on the eleventh of September, 2010, at his office. he was informed upon that meeting that if he wanted to disseminate the information further, to please ask her first an inform her as to which parties were interested in reading the pages, upon which she would have the right to grant or refuse them access to the report. she also stated that further questions could be submitted to her via the NV and that they would be answered by her, in writing.]

I must begin this report with a degree of disclosure, that much of what went on in the world (I suppose it must have been a world, although I never saw much of it; we were very much confined, and even those rooms that had windows of course had a very limited view. Although on a limited basis I was allowed into a courtyard, sometimes with other specimens, I was never allowed outside of St.Edelweiss or allowed to wander around the building. There was one incident with a gentleman where he reportedly escaped, for a while, and made his way into the mountains in an effort to find some civilized outpost and perhaps help. However, he was eventually returned, informing me upon a private meeting that he had reached a town outside, in the mountains, and stopped to rest there, but apparently encountered some league with the townspeople there and St. Edelweiss. As such, I can only conclude that those few inhabitants of surrounding civilized outposts either had reason to believe we had needs to be contained, or they did not care that we suffered). But I have digressed.

St.Edelweiss introduced a world in every way much more structured than this one. We were ruled over by the staff, more or less given free reign to do as they would to the specimens. I have little understanding of what they might have hoped to glean from us; I am left to conclude that we must have been some kind of group psychological study.

Unfortunately, my idea of how much time I passed there is unclear. Some months, I believe; during which there was a constant influx of patients as well as constant disappearances, some of which were confirmed as deaths but some of which we were simply forced to read either as deaths that weren't broadcasted or confirmed, or in light of my own appearance in this world, perhaps those people who disappeared were drawn into new places, like me.

Patients were roomed together with two people to a room regardless of whether they were men or women. In my months in St.Edelweiss I never had a female roommate. Cells were connected with an intercom system, with which people would talk to each other, sometimes to make plans, or discuss things, or sing or play games. Occasionally much worse things would be broadcasted. People were tortured and their cries broadcast over the lines. Announcements signaling that one or the other of us would be singled out for personal attention were also broadcasted.

Once a week, we had laundry day, where we were either expected to strip naked and leave our clothes to be collected, or security would strip us by force. On these days we were expected to remain naked. Those who struggled were quickly subdued. Often these games became game days, with word games over the intercom, for patients to talk and have something to focus on with each other besides being uncomfortable, cold and naked.

On rare occasions, former specimens would apparently be "promoted" to staff positions. Two of these promoted patients were my friends, and they became a guard and a nurse, until eventually the one who became a guard was transferred to being a nurse as well. In this position they were expected to carry out the duties of the rest of the staff, which sometimes included bringing former and current friends into therapy sessions. These people helped as best they could but the added responsibility of being staff put them into a position of extreme danger as well. They could do some valuable things for us, but if they were relied on too much they would be stripped of staff powers and forced back into the cells with us, as happened to one of them. As such, their position was one of strain, tension, and danger. They did live with more creature comforts but I would not envy them their position.

The cells were our homes for most of the day (although eventually a communal dining room was built, and we were expected to take meals there), with free periods. Doors were locked outside of free periods, and during mealtime until the dining room was built. However, at night, all of the doors unlocked, and patients would move freely about the patient wing, barred from staff corridors and rooms and from the burned wing and the exit. Staff would disclaim any knowledge of this freedom of movement during the day. This brings me to another point: the mysterious burned wing. We were told that there was a fire in that wing before we arrived at St.Edelweiss, and that the grounds there were still dangerous, thus it was barred from our entry.

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Nothing superhuman. Rin is a fighter, but not exactly a badass one; she's EXTREMELY determined when she has to be and innovative under pressure, and she's stronger, faster, and smarter than one would expect, but she's human and Blade is a series where characters bleed and sweat for years to get good. She just hasn't put in the time to reach that level, nor does she have the inclination to take lives, generally.

Other than that, she's smart. She's adaptable. She relates well to people. She can cook and clean and take care of herself, at least in her own setting – the modern world is going to present a hell of a lot of hurdles for her to cross.
If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? I'd like Rin to have the ability of stealth! With the application of will, she'll become less noticeable to most psyches; as her strength and practice with her skill grows, she'll become harder and harder to notice or find, even for psychics or people with superhuman senses, and eventually she'll have enough strength to cloak a few other people along with her, although physical contact will be a necessity to extend the shield to them.

She will still be noticeable to cameras and electronic surveillance, and psychics more powerful than she will be able to break her shield and both notice her and be able to expose her to other people. I'd like her shield to be dependant partly on her will though, and Rin's will is pretty strong, so as her facility with her dormant ability grows she'll be able to shore up her shield against stronger and stronger pressures. Vulnerability to electronic observers will remain a serious liability, though.

This ability would allow her to function as potentially both a spy when necessary and perhaps, eventually, as an assassin. Her previous game's environment hardened and sharpened her in a lot of ways so both paths are possibilities.
Weapons: She did not possess any weapons in her previous game, but I wonder if it would be possible to bring her heirloom sword, Kutoneshirika, into the world of Siren's Port with her? It's an important item, it was theoretically in storage in the previous game, and it's a weapon she's familiar with in a world where it's not safe to be unarmed (not that it's safe to be armed either, but she'll feel a bit better).

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: Two years before her canon's start point, Rin was living a happy, peaceful life as the daughter of a samurai family. Her father was the head of a sword school known as the Mutenichi-ryu, and there was strife in the land as always, conflict stemming this time from an upstart sword school known as the Itto-ryu, which was going around razing other sword schools to the ground, killing students who couldn't convert (because the Itto-ryu was a sword school that demanded a high caliber of fighting skill from its members and not everyone could deliver) and trying to spread its philosophy (whatever works, in a nutshell) to every part of the country.

As might be expected from this beginning, the hammer fell on Rin's family, with a personal twist this time, as the leader of the Itto-ryu's grandfather had once been a Mutenichi-ryu swordsman before he was thrown out of the school over a manner of style, and Rin's grandfather (the old master's son) was given the leadership of the school.

Anotsu was the son of the man who was thrown out, and he carried out his grandfathers' legacy of rage against the Asano. Rin's parents were killed, although she was left alive because assaulting children showed “no class”.

Fast forward two years. Rin's canon begins. She's been wandering alone for that time, searching for Itto-ryu in a vengeance quest. Unfortunately it's not been going so well, as it's hard to even find Itto-ryu, much less kill them (Itto-ryu are hella good, and Rin, though determined, is not so hot with a sword). It's lucky, then, that she finds Manji, a swordsman who eventually agrees to serve as her bodyguard.

Manji is immortal, which is a big help putting down Itto-ryu, and he and Rin start traveling together, which is a big help to her in overcoming some of that loneliness. The two have a lot of adventures together, killing Itto-ryu and becoming closer, fighting a hidden immortal swordsman (just like Manji!) in the Itto-ryu, getting Rin's heirloom sword back from the Itto-ryu member who stole it, meeting more enemies and allies as they go. Occasionally Rin runs into Anotsu again too, and frankly, she turns out to be a pretty sucky avenger, given that her will to kill people is pretty low and she states that she hates useless violence.

Eventually, after finding out that Anotsu is traveling to settlement of Kaga, Rin splits off from Manji and goes by herself to follow her parents' killer, revealing that she's determined and obsessive enough to go a little crazy when the opportunity arises. Manji can't go with her because he's has a criminal record and a warrant out for him, although Rin doesn't realize she has one too, after being blamed for the crimes of a sociopath named Shira. She has to assume another identity to follow her parents' killers, and manages pretty well until she gets careless and is robbed on the road, ending up with no money to get rooms or food. :|

Nearly starving and half dead on the trail, Rin is found by Anotsu, and she follows him – and although he could easily kill her (and it would probably be better for Anotsu if he did; Rin is a danger to him, no matter how small) he allows her to travel with him, and her hatred for him changes and lessens when traveling with him while his respect for her, near nonexistent at first, increases somewhat. Eventually they even team up and fight together; Anotsu gets lockjaw and Rin claims she'll follow him and kill him when he's weak enough (he still doesn't kill her!) and then never gets around to it until he's so weak she says she missed her window of opportunity (thus proving again that Rin is a crappy avenger). Eventually, even with all this, she runs into Manji again, and swearing to Anotsu that she'll kill him the next time they meet (ha ha ha... ha ha...) she departs with her bodyguard.

It's mostly back to business and monster-of-the-week whacking for our intrepid heroine and her man after that, more of the usual with Rin getting put in danger and Manji rescuing her, weird new enemies popping up that need to be whacked, all against a background of continuing strife in Edo.

Eventually Manji is called in to talk with the government about working off his criminal name by killing FOR the government, and when he turns that down, he's taken in, because immortality is a hot commodity in Edo and the government would really like to find out how it works and how it could be passed on. Rin has an ubercrush on Manji at this point, plus he's her friend and bodyguard and she needs him, so she promptly sets about to figuring out what happened and how to lever him out of it.

To do this, she ends up teaming up with a couple of Itto-ryu (the last person you'd ever expect to, really) and in fact letting them stay in her house after one of them tried to kill her (over the course of the series we also realize that Rin is somewhat bananas, has a way too huge heart, and doesn't mind hanging out with crazy people one something of the other side of the law as long as they don't enjoy killing too much). The Itto-ryu's name are Doa and Isaku and they love each other very much, and eventually when Isaku is captured and impounded to take part in the brutal immortality experiments (tons of people are dying in the prison-slash-'lab' under Edo castle, where Manji is confined, because research techniques aren't exactly what you'd call ethical there) and Doa goes a little nuts when Isaku gets caught. Rin takes her well in hand though, proving that she can both lead and keep a level head in a crisis, too.

So, the two girls do some spying and scheming and planning, and they head off to the heavily-guarded very secure prison by themselves to find their men and get them out!

Only then she was pulled into St.Edelweiss. And from there, she was pulled into Siren's Port. Actually, the latter place is an improvement in many regards.

Point in Canon: Just as she and Doa were beginning to storm Edo castle.

Brief summary of previous RP history: St.Edelweiss was not a place where characters thrived so much as maintained – and that if they were lucky. In her time in the asylum, Rin didn't learn any amazing skills or kill any staff or anything, but she did persist in a quiet, stubborn resistance against the forces of staff, which were usually repressive, dangerous, sadistic, and generally awful, with few exceptions.

Rin spent some time in the asylum just getting her bearings, making friends (finding allies), and figuring out what she possibly thought she could do to resist the place (because very quickly she figured out that it was a place that demanded resistance if a person didn't want to be destroyed). In short order she tried to make connections with senior patients from before some mysterious massacre was carried out over the patient body, finding out about the occurrence of mysterious fires in short order.

She had allies and enemies from home in the asylum already, the most prominent of which would prove to be Shira, who she quietly plotted to kill (a plot which she then got beaten up for) – an event that actually kind of won her more allies, as the patients already knew Shira was scum and were sympathetic to her.

In short enough order she befriended fellow patient Hisoka and became his partner in crime in a manner of speaking, shortly joined by the patient Matt. Together the three of them agreed to tally and record the deaths and disappearances of their fellow patients as the asylum ground people under its heel, and this duty was one that Rin would carry out until she left the asylum with as much dedication as she could. It was both an act of morality, an attempt to give respect and record the depravity of the place in which they were trapped, and an act of defiance, again in tracking the asylum's crimes.

This project and Matt held her up through many losses, the deaths of many of her friends, dirty deals amongst patients that would put Rin at Shira's mercy in exchange for him leaving a few other people alone, and Rin's will proved strong. She fell somewhat in love with Matt, and her project and the thought that she could help other people, she would help other people, held her through losing many of her friends, sometimes more than once as people came and went. Her strongest belief was that maintaining patient solidarity and not losing hope or self-respect could carry them through almost anything, and to this end she did her best to shore up both of these things.

She developed a tendency to start games in the darkest times, simple little things that would allow her to talk to people, to support them and cheer them up, and to find allies. She was only taken into the dreaded therapy one early time and after that she more or less escaped the heavy hands of the staff. She managed to maintain; that was about the best that could be hoped for, under the circumstances.

It didn't last forever, though. Matt died, and Shira came and beat her comatose for a week, and when she woke up the asylum had changed very greatly. Most of the friends she'd cared for had disappeared. The patients' numbers had dwindled. The openings in the defenses of the asylum, chances to defy and possibly defeat staff – well, they didn't appear any more frequently. Rin continued to try and maintain, and that was more or less the best she could manage.

Other patients became friends and support, with much relief from Rin to because in paying attention to them she could drown her own growing depression out.

Eventually newcomers appeared on the patient line, speaking of the history of the asylum and chances to change things, and really to make a difference against the mostly terrible staff (there were a few exceptions, but they were the minority). Rin focused on them, calling them out over the patients' channel of the intercom, and gradually she lost interest in most of the other things she'd done, but this also caused her drive to do most anything else to drop through the floor. Finally, St. Edelweiss and all its brutalities were really taking a toll.

The day she awakes in Siren's Port will be shocking and confusing and awful but also not, in a way, unwelcome. She was slowly dying where she was before, after all.

Character Personality: In spite of all her bad experiences, Rin is basically a sweet girl. She’s strong-willed and altruistic and she truly wants to do what’s right. Most of the problems she has with this stem from the fact that in her world, there never really seems to be a surefire right thing to do.

She’s a bit of a crybaby, and she has a big sweet tooth, and she’s not as good a fighter as most of the other people in the series. No one should think that Rin’s worthless or wimpy because of any of this, though! This is a girl who deliberately dislocated her own thumb so she could slip out of her bonds and go rescue her bodyguard. She’s tough! So when Rin’s really loyal to someone, she’d undergo almost anything to keep them safe. She’s fairly clever as well. She’s good at making antidotes for emergencies and carries a little poison too. Since she’s not an especially strong fighter she relies heavily on surprise, demonstrated mostly in her Golden Wasps attack, where she throws several small daggers which are usually concealed in her sleeves. She's also developed a knack for strategy, and for working with people who are difficult to work with – Anotsu, the murderer of her parents, states at one point that he's impressed how much strength she drew out of some of her allies, fragile otherwise.

Rin is good with people. She has a huge, deep heart, and a compassionate nature even when she can be bratty and haughty sometimes. She can be mean, but she's not generally inclined to be genuinely unkind. She's just a rather sharp girl in many ways. Her past sort of honed an edge on her, although she can conceal it, and she has a wealth of psychological damage and a fixation on her identity as an avenger. If you removed that key purpose and part of her personality, Rin would have a hard time knowing what to do with herself. It's what she's been so focused on for such a long time that thinking of giving it up is literally painful, even though she's not a good killer.

Stemming from this as well, for all her desire to become stronger Rin’s not entirely cut out to be a fighter. She’s too empathetic; she even finds a certain amount of sympathy for her own private enemy Anotsu, and won’t kill him when he’s alone with her and terribly weakened by lockjaw – it’s just not the honorable thing to do! But that’s Rin, always on some level preferring reconciliation with her enemies rather than just decapitating them. She yells a lot at Anotsu and acts really bratty towards him (although he probably deserves it), but there isn’t as much honest hate demonstrated between them as you’d think. They even manage to work pretty well together sometimes. This is probably a symptom of Rin's essential adaptability and drive to survive, along with her complete incapability to turn a blind eye to someone elses' suffering. Even when she wants to, even when it might be safer, she is not inclined to just let people be miserable, or to find it easy to let them suffer or die – even when it's to protect someone absolutely precious to her (although in that situation, she'll bite lip and push through with it).

If I had to name an alignment I would put Rin as a neutral good. She'll break a law and stomp all over a rule if she thinks it's the right thing to do, and damn the consequences. Still, her natural disinclination to kill or torture and her dislike of pointless violence, and her inclination to help other people still makes her a good person, in my opinion. She just won't necessarily go by the book (she also doesn't keep the best of company, so as you can likely guess, her morals are athletically flexible too).

Personality development in previous game: St. Edelweiss left a mark on most of the characters that went through it, and Rin was no exception. It was not a good place for anyone, and likewise was not a good place for her.

Rin was a very open person, somewhat naive and easy to manipulate, and most of the people she meets throughout her canon take advantage of it at one point or another. However, in St. Edelweiss, casually bestowing trust of any magnitude could prove to be a huge mistake. It was important to place people as allies or enemies fast, and to be on guard at all times. Coming out of the asylum Rin will be much more guarded, much more choosy who she really opens up to, much slower to trust. After all, in St. Edelweiss people died and left so easily. She wouldn't want to be open to that pain again, as much as loneliness might hurt her, and being the outsider looking in.

A significant change at St. E was that in many places Rin sort of stopped regarding people as people. It's not to say that she became cruel or callous, and she didn't enjoy people dying – even when she just thought of people as objects, she didn't want to see them die. But here's the thing: in many cases people became objects and obstacles, burdens to be shouldered by her or someone else, but she engaging personally with people, becoming friends with them, relying on them, was so chancy and in so many cases something that just got her hurt. Leaving St. E, she'll be slow to trust or engage until she's relatively certain that someone will LAST for a while, because in Siren's Port, it's easy to die in a lot of horrible ways too.

So, she was kind to people, and she tried to help them, but if someone couldn't take care of themselves, keep up or adapt to at least some apparent degree, she would not emotionally engage with them. It was surface kindness, a distraction to occupy herself where otherwise she'd bog down in her own despair, and if one of those people that she spoke kindly to and encouraged and played games with was in trouble, and so was someone else that she actually cared about, Rin would drop the former – not without guilt or sorrow, but she would – and she'd go to the latter, to do as much as she could for someone that she felt also gave back to her.

St. Edelweiss forced her to become sneakier. It also put her in a position to use her brain. She's become more perceptive about people, as thinking about people and watching the way they worked there was another thing to stave off boredom and desperation. She acquired some familiarity with the idea that hope and smoke and mirrors and kind words could stabilize people in a crisis, could help someone without her actually having to stir herself to effort. The power of words and information was more valuable than physical power for her, at least in terms of utilizing it, since she was smart enough to make a rousing speech or snag an ally verbally but not strong enough to kill someone or defend herself. Although at the end of her time in St. Edelweiss if there was a chance to kill one of her persistent tormenters, one of the people who'd hurt other people she cared about, she would have taken it.

Rin became more thoughtful in her words, more wary of when to speak up and when to challenge authority. She didn't lose a somewhat smartassed sense of humor but it did get darker, more desperate, more aware of her precarious situation. She became more cautious. Matured, in many degrees, but at a cost that turned her stressed and grieving. But the tendencies developed in St. Edelweiss might prove useful even in Siren's Port, so who knows? Maybe it was for the best.

Character Plans: Well, really, what I'd like her to do is get a chance to heal. Rin is at her heart plainly a nice girl, empathetic, sympathetic, and kind, for all that she can be a downright brat sometimes and she suffered a lot in her past game setting really without any respite. I'd like to see if she could rebuild a support network, find her feet in (another) totally unfamiliar world, and even thrive.

That and I miss playing her in more than one place. :)

First Person Sample

Siren's Port was a very different city, and Rin was so unused to cities by now that she really did find it somewhat terrifying. Even without the Darkness (which she hadn't even seen yet, but wasn't anxious to see anyway), without the crime, without the threat of slavery or experimentation or prostitution – so like what she'd just gotten out of that it nearly made her ill – all of the people, the demands of an entirely different time, everything that she was going to have to learn...

Her head was still spinning. It wasn't her first experience with being unexpectedly dragged from one – world, apparently? - into another, but looking up nearly gave her vertigo. All that beautiful sky, even here, in a filthy city; gorgeous, depthless blue, so intense it nearly burned her eyes.

That was how she felt. A little burned. Tender, wounded.

There was so much she was going to have to learn to do. She could see that just looking at the apartment, which was unhospitably bare. How was she going to get food? At least at the asylum, she'd known where the next meal would come from, even if it was mostly a chore to eat.

She bit her lip. Don't start missing that place, girl. It just wouldn't do, to start thinking like that.

She felt so heavy. She'd lost so many things that she never thought anyone could take away from her. Not after her parents -

The bleachers were hard seats, not very comfortable, and Rin shifted and sighed. She was bonier than she used to be. She'd lost weight. She was still dirty and cold. At least in the apartments, there had to be a way to clean up.

“Not yet,” she said to herself. She felt exposed, fearful, somewhat shy, but she wasn't ready for that yet, closing off the world to herself again. There was probably a word for what she was feeling, like she might just float off the planet, Pull or no. Not that she would know it.

“Not right now.” She looked up, shifting, pulling her legs up to tuck them awkwardly under her bottom.

She wasn't ready to leave that sky just yet, that was all. Birds floated in it like long-lost dreams. She felt like she'd dropped a weight, very suddenly. It was a feeling guilty and good and frightening. She had no connections to anyone. She was utterly on her own, more than she'd been even in St. Edelweiss, where at least she'd had an enemy at first, to focus on surviving against. Letting her unmoored heart up into the air let her feel like she might never get it back, and maybe like she wouldn't feel bad about losing it without a trace, either.

Third Person Sample

CANON: From current manga chapters – is in the midst of storming the prison with Doa, has not been reunited with her bodyguard Manji yet.

WHAT THEY LOST: Rin lost Kutoneshirika, her family’s heirloom Chinese sword. Although the blade isn’t very sharp it’s one that holds personal meaning to her as one of the mementoes of her previous life with her family; in the manga she was stunned to see it in Itto-Ryu hands and risked her identity being discovered to try and get it back. It’s an important item to her.

PERSONALITY: In spite of all her bad experiences, Rin is basically a sweet girl. She’s strong-willed and altruistic and she truly wants to do what’s right. Most of the problems she has with this stem from the fact that in her world, there never really seems to be a surefire right thing to do.

She’s a bit of a crybaby, and she has a big sweet tooth, and she’s not as good a fighter as most of the other people in the series. No one should think that Rin’s worthless or wimpy because of any of this, though! This is a girl who deliberately dislocated her own thumb so she could slip out of her bonds and go rescue her bodyguard. She’s tough! So when Rin’s really loyal to someone, she’d undergo almost anything to keep them safe. She’s fairly clever as well. She’s good at making antidotes for emergencies and carries a little poison too. Since she’s not an especially strong fighter she relies heavily on surprise, demonstrated mostly in her Golden Wasps attack, where she throws several small daggers which are usually concealed in her sleeves.

For all her desire to become stronger Rin’s not entirely cut out to be a fighter. She’s too empathetic; she even finds a certain amount of sympathy for her own private enemy Anotsu, and won’t kill him when he’s alone with her and terribly weakened by lockjaw – it’s just not the honorable thing to do! But that’s Rin, always on some level preferring reconciliation with her enemies rather than just decapitating them. She yells a lot at Anotsu and acts really bratty towards him (although he probably deserves it), but there isn’t as much honest hate demonstrated between them as you’d think. They even manage to work pretty well together sometimes.

Manji, her bodyguard, could probably be fairly stated as Rin’s most important person. She has a giant crush on him and relies on his protection, but has saved his life before. She sees him as a man but also as a brotherly figure, at least in the beginning of the manga; current canon has him imprisoned and Rin with no idea of where he is. She’s still worried and fixated on searching for him.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
The sky was fringed with blue. Rin kept her eyes on that, helping Anotsu into the boat, scathingly embarrassed for both of them. Striving to ignore his shamefully weak grip on her shoulder, then her forearm. The air was muggy. She thought it might rain.

Anotsu dropped back to recline on the wood with a raspy sigh. He was safe to look at again – as safe as ever.

He was very pale; mangy, thin. He looked like a wolf starved down to a cur. He’d lost muscle mass. Probably couldn’t fight worth a…. worth a damn. His narrow eyes were fixed on her. An expression of futile anger and thwarted machismo. Rin locked her eyes onto the designs fringing his robe and settled Head Hammer down alongside him, within reach but not touching. A gesture only; it wasn’t as if he had the strength to use it.

She stood beside the boat a moment, shifting from foot to foot. Picked at one grimy fingernail. “I’ll buy some rice,” she said. Talking to Anotsu was worthless, scarcely different from talking to herself, but it comforted her nonetheless. It assured her that he wasn’t a phantom yet. “There’s not much money left so I don’t know how much I can get. Of anything.” She tried to bite it down but the words squeezed from the corner of her mouth: “I’ll try not to be gone too long.”

Only slow, tortured breathing from the boat: heavy, irregular as an injured dog. Then a gasp and a long wheeze. Rin jumped, wondering if he’d die right there, the thought too sudden to crush. She leaned over and checked him and saw with a flare of lightheadedness that he was fine. He was laughing. A smirk twisted his lips, spit gathered at the corners of his mouth. Rin dropped back, stomped away.

I hate you, she thought. Damn snake-eyes. What a mess he’d dragged her into. She held his life in her hands and couldn’t take it. It wasn’t even his strength holding her at bay now. It would just be too pathetic to kill him as he was. Dishonorable, too much in keeping with the tenets of the philosophy he followed, of victory at any cost. It would be so easy, but she didn’t want to complete her vengeance like this.

The trek over the mountain had clouded her formerly clear vision. It was confusing, to see the man underneath the leader, and then to see weakness overcoming the man. There wasn’t too much she could do for him, really. Rin’s medicinal skills were mostly limited to herbal work and doctoring Manji, who was an easy patient, really. Even if she gave her best to Anotsu it might not be enough. Either way, she’d keep her word, and watch over him until his end, whether it came sooner or later.

She was only a few paces on the path when she stopped and looked anxiously back. The entire day felt precariously balanced; the back of Rin’s arms and neck itched as if stung by the cold breath of spirits. The boat sat innocently by the river. It still felt like rain. At last she turned and continued towards the town. Whatever happened, they needed food, and Anotsu was not a man who feared being alone with his ghosts.

FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: I… I think I’m really lost, this time.

At least the first time I knew how I’d gotten lost in the first place. This is different. Full of such strange-looking people, everything here is so strange, and I’m alone here…

If he was here right now, I know what Manji would say… he’d say… “If you have time to cry, go practice your moves!” And he wouldn’t let up until I g-got up…

So I should probably go do that… Manji would say, “you don’t know who your friends are here!” and he wouldn’t trust anyone, and he’d make sure I didn’t either. H-he’d be so angry if I neglected my training… so I better make sure I’m prepared…

If he saw me right now, when there was so much to do to find things out and be safe, he’d say, “I guess you’re still just a little brat after all.” Manji-! I’ll show you… I’ll make you proud! Hyakurin said, “if you’re always relying on a man to protect you, you’ll never become strong yourself.” So I have to do for my best for myself now! This is my chance to get strong on my own! N-no more tears! PRACTICE! Atta girl, Rin! I’ll be out of here in no time!
