Part 1

But we are the lovers,
If you don't believe me,
Then just look into my eyes,
Cause the heart never lies.

Pete always said Patrick was the only person who really 'got' him, the only one to laugh at his jokes no matter how lame, the one who understands where he's going even before he does himself sometimes. But sometimes Pete wonders if it's all pretend, maybe Patrick's response is delayed by a fraction of a second, but that fraction grows in Pete's mind until it becomes an eternity and the unintentional pause becomes something with many meanings. The smallest hesitation becomes something Pete can obsess about for days, even if he forgets what he said and the response, all that matters is the fact that Patrick had to think about the answer.

Some of the nights when Patrick didn't answer the phone Pete would read too much into it. He'd think Patrick was mad at him for something stupid he'd said or done that day and found himself thinking of a million and one ways to make it up to him. Some of these were perfectly normal, buying him a muffin and surprising him with breakfast at his doorstep the next morning. Some of them however were less normal, one of these examples meant he spent 8 hours trying to teach Hemmy how to talk and making him a hat that said "I'm sorry" in pink glittery writing on it. Ok so Pete had found that one fun to do as well, but it had taken him forever to get the glue out of Hemmy's fur when he decided to roll round in it. Add in the fact Hemmy hated baths and probably liked the pink glitter he now had in his fur and he'd ended up chasing the dog round the house for an hour. Everyone knew though, this was just Pete, it was just what he did.

Nothing Pete can do will stop him from thinking of Patrick as the awkward boy he met when Joe promised he'd found "the perfect guy, man." He knew it was probably wrong, but Patrick woke some instinct in him to protect him no matter what. When anyone hurt Patrick they hurt Pete because he was the one who lay awake on the tour bus listening to the younger boy's breath catching in the bunk at night when he thought everyone was asleep, still trying to hide the fact he was crying. He could never hide anything from Pete, at least Pete thought he could read Patrick like a book, sometimes it seemed to be in another language but when Pete translated it it made perfect sense in the way that only Patrick could. So when Patrick tried to hide something from Pete he made it his mission to find out what it was his younger friend couldn't tell him. He let Patrick think he was getting away with the lie, bending the truth or however you choose to word it, but he never did.

***

When Patrick had first met Pete he had closed the door after Pete and Joe and sat on the floor, back against the door, wondering what he was getting himself into. Even then he knew Pete was strange unusual; before he'd been kept awake listening to him, before he'd received a pink sparkly Hemmy who had aparently eaten the apology muffin. Though Patrick couldn't think why Pete would need to apologise he accepted the apology because it was the easiest thing to do.

That was one thing about Pete though, Patrick found he went along with him because it was 'the easiest thing to do' even if he didn't agree with whatever it was he couldn't say no. He should probably work on that, but he wasn't sure if he wanted to, it was something that worked for them, Patrick would sometimes wish he hadn't done whatever was suggested but at the time he'd been convinced it was a good idea. Like the many times that Pete said they were a couple. Patrick knew he was only joking, but he started to doubt it in his mind, maybe they were acting more like a couple and sometimes when Pete said it he didn't have that glint in his eye, the one that only people who knew him could recognise. The sparkle/shine/whatever that meant he was joking, he could keep a straight face but to anyone who had spent any amount of time around him it was a dead give away.

"Patrick?" He wasn't sure where Pete had appeared from but suddenly he was there. He did that sometimes; appear as if there had been a door to another part of the bus, an invisible door that only Pete knew of, but he'd pop up suddenly and surprise people though no one was quite sure how. Patrick was kind of wishing Pete would leave, just ask him a question and leave, he had a melody in his head and he wanted to put it onto his laptop before it slipped out of his ears and was lost for ever. "You love me right?" That got Patrick's attention, though it didn't get him an answer. "I mean like best friends," Pete grinned as Patrick found his head moving without him telling it to and nodding which was obviously the right answer as Pete grinned and bounced out of the room.

That was another thing about Pete, no matter how well you thought you knew him he could always surprise you, even if he didn't mean to particularly. And when Patrick's brain finally caught up with the situation he realised Pete is also the only person he knew who could literally bounce out of a room without looking like an idiot.
