It starts off with one cryptic text messages that Patrick doesn’t know what to make of. He ignores the first one and doesn’t even second glance at the phone. A few hours later, his curiosity gets the best of him and he can’t resist reading it. It’s not like he has to answer, right?
pinch me i must be dreaming
because this doesn’t feel real at all
something is wrong
youre not here
Patrick’s grip on the phone tightens and his knuckles turn white. No, he tells himself, I will not let this affect me.
He says the same thing when the next text message comes about four hours later. Patrick doesn’t find it until the next day because it was sent at four o’clock in the morning.
every smile takes a thousand years
every laugh gets caught in my throat
when did this begin to mean so much to me?
When did what begin to mean so much to you? Pete is always ambiguous but this is just plain confusing. Patrick’s more than confused because he can usually somewhat translate Pete-speak into English. This time he feels completely left in the dark.
The next few messages are sent within minutes of each other.
why do i do this when i feel like this?
Do what when you feel what?! Patrick mentally screams in frustration.
why is this definitely not the first time ive had these thoughts?
What thoughts?! Patrick’s fingers are itching to respond and ask but he ignores it.
if we could make time stop
what would we do?
it's not like we did much
with time we had on our hands
Patrick throws a plate against the wall and breathes heavily, his chest heaving up and down, as he watches the pieces fall gracefully on the ground around him.
please save me
Patrick freezes at this last one. Literally. He can’t bring himself to move. The weird blue wave screen saver comes on the screen of his cell phone and he still can’t do anything. He practically falls off his chair when the phone buzzes in his hand and the screen lights up.
Patrick clicks “read” and sucks in a breath. A breath that hitches in his throat on the way out because of the message in his palms.
ive been waiting
been aching for too long
The last time Pete started saying stuff like this, Patrick ended up in a hospital next to Pete’s bed. And Patrick does not want to relive the events that followed the Best Buy incident. He slams his cell phone shut, slips on a pair of converses, a hat, and hoodie andcasually walks runs to his car.
