We ran about ten feet, and then we promptly found ourselves on our asses. We were being circled by the group of boys; all intimidating, tattooed and pierced. The tiny boy, Johnny, was standing behind the tallest boy, almost shaking.
"Well Pete Wentz. What brings you to my part of town." The boy from the pictures asked.
"You know why I'm here Matt." Pete said pushing his back against mine, his body language expressing the emotion in his voice. Pete's eyes were probably locked on Johnny. "You need to let him come back."
"He needs to grow up, Pete." Matt said, and I could see the taller man guarding Johnny. "That Neverland Place isn't going to teach him how to live. He'll get killed out in the real world. That place is just a dreamland. And besides, he came here on his own free will."
"And this place is gonna teach him how to live?!" Pete yelled back, placing his hands on top of mine and grasping them firmly. His touch mad me shiver for some reason, and I just looked blankly upon the two men in front of me. "All you do is talk about cars and kiss other guys! Bullshit, his own free will. I think you get off on kidnapping my kids and dragging them into this world. Just let me take him back with me and we wont have trouble, Matty."
"Don't you ever fucking call me that again!" Matt growled, bending down to Pete's level and clutching the back of his neck. Pete took a sharp breath and tightened the grip on my hands, nails digging into the soft skin on my palms.
Pete's breath suddenly hitched and I whipped my head around to find Matt's lips attached to Pete's. Matt worked his tongue in and out of Pete's mouth, using his hand to pull Pete closer. Matt pulled away abruptly; Pete's eyes glued shut. Matt wiped at his lips, standing, and gaining odd looks from his group of friends.
"Leave." Pete let his head fall, sighing, as Matt continued. "And never come back."
We walked back to the tree houses in complete silence. Neither of us brought up the kiss that Matt and Pete had shared, but by the look on both of their faces I had a feeling it wasn't the first time it had occurred.
"How did it go?" Nicole asked as Pete and I walked into the dining area. All the kids were seated at the table not so patiently waiting for their breakfasts.
"Is he here?" Pete answered, a little aggravated, pulling out his chair and sitting down. He put his elbow on the table and rubbed his forehead before turning back to Nicole and I. "I'm sorry, that was really rude. It's just… you know how Matt gets to me."
"Yea it's ok." She said rubbing Pete's shoulders. "Let's just get breakfast started."
Almost in unison the kids began cheering. I took the empty seat near Mike and Gabe as Nicole walked into the kitchen. The table was filled with various boxes of cereal, all filled with artificial sugar and marshmallows, the things that kids love. Some children began reaching for the cereal as Nicole re-entered the dining area, carrying plates stacked with pancakes, eggs, and bacon.
Hearing the swinging door shut, Pete lifted his head and cleared his throat loudly. The children became quiet quickly and bowed their heads. Pete said a short prayer thanking 'Who ever happens to be listening' for friends, food, and 'All the friends that have become family'. I think he was directing the last comment to us, trying to make us feel like all the people we needed were under this roof.
And maybe he was right; I did have everything I needed under that roof. I had Gabe and Mike.
And Pete.
Little did I know just how much of an impact Pete would have on my life.
