Disclaimer: Not real. I think it would be cute if it was though
Summary: When Pete can't sleep, he finds comfort in Patrick's sleeping
Author's Notes: Hey guys! I haven't died just been away and have like finals and stuff, the last chapter of Ordinary moments will be up soon, it's nearly done actually but this is just something I wrote in work earlier. Enjoy!
There are nights on the tour bus when Pete feels like he might go crazy. He loves touring and the other guys are his favourite people in the world to spend time with but when the high from the show has died, when the cameras have stopped, when the 17 year olds have ceased screaming his name, when he has poured his heart out to the online blogs and when the others are all sleeping soundly, Pete is alone. There is nothing to keep him company but the hum of the bus engine, that and too much thinking.
After a while it can all get a bit too much. These are Pete’s so called bad nights. Alone with his thoughts can be a dangerous position for Pete to be left in. Sometimes he becomes so desperate to silence the endless jumble of senseless rambling he picks one thing around him, just one, and focuses on it with all his might. Usually it’s the sounds Patrick makes in his sleep. He’ll crawl into the bunk area and lay there in the dark just listening to Patrick’s deep even breathing. Occasionally he’ll mumble something and Pete makes a game of trying to guess what Patrick is dreaming about.
His favourite quote of the month is “But Pete you can’t be queen of England, you’re a boy”. He’d have loved to tease Patrick about some of the things he said (and the frequency at which he heard his own name) but he didn’t want Patrick to know about this night time routine. If Patrick knew, he would be self conscious and Pete didn’t want to make Patrick uncomfortable. He just needed those nights in ways he couldn’t explain to himself, or maybe he just didn’t want to.
Some nights Patrick has nightmares and this bothers Pete even more than his own inability to sleep. He hears Patrick cry out in fear and his heart breaks a little every time. On really bad nights he climbs into the bunk beside Patrick and wraps himself around his best friend, trying to chase away the demons that plague his sleep. Patrick always settles immediately and Pete swears sometimes Patrick sighs his name as if he knows Pete is there. He always leaves before Patrick wakes up and Patrick never mentions anything to him so Pete figures his secret is safe.
Patrick isn’t a magical cure for insomnia. Pete just doesn’t go stir crazy on bad nights if he can focus on his friend. He doesn’t sleep any better when he crawls into Patrick’s bunk he just finds peace knowing Patrick does.
Pete thinks some nights he could grow old listening to Patrick sleep. Then he thinks about what that means. Then he thinks about the fact that what that means doesn’t scare him.
These are the kinds of thoughts Pete finds okay on the tour bus in the middle of the night. Patrick and breathing and content sighs.
So let me know what you think!
