“No,” Pete says again with a shrug, and Patrick feels like he’s losing him. Pete’s drifting again, distancing. The immediacy of his panic is evaporating into depression, spiraling beyond the blow to his ego and into the vicinity of his deepest fears: getting old (his body failing), and being alone (his image fading.)
