Chapter 3: 'Neverland with Peter Pan?'

We came to a thick line of trees that seemed to go on for miles in both directions. There was a small skinny boy standing in front of the space in the trees, holding a staff that was taller than him. He had short brown hair, and looked to be no older than twelve. His skin was pale and his cheeks were lined with small brown freckles.

When he saw us approaching, he stood up as if called to attention. He eyed us up quickly.

"Evening, Bert." Pete said and he spoke into the small boy's ear briefly before turning back to the rest of us. "Nicole will take you two to a room and she'll find you something to sleep in." His big brown eyes met mine again. "Pat, you can come with me and we'll talk."

"Patrick." I corrected. God, I hated being called Pat. I looked over at my brothers. "Will you two be okay without me for a while?" They both nodded mutely. Nicole promptly took Gabe's hand and proceeded to lead them through the clearing. Pete and I followed shortly after.

Passing through that row of trees was like entering another world. There were at least ten tree houses connected with bridges and ladders. They were lit with candles and some even had electrical wires run to them from a source somewhere off in the distance.

"What the hell is this place?" I asked Pete, utterly baffled.

"My home... our home." Pete said with a slight chuckle. He continued to lead me towards the biggest tree house and up the spiral staircase to it's main room. I was stunned at how big this place actually was. I could see a staircase that led to an upper level.

"This is my home." He said, putting his arms out and spinning around slowly. "Everything else," He paused, motioning towards the window. "Well... that's theirs."

"Where am I?" I said quietly, still baffled at the sight. As I looked out the window I saw dozens of children, but not one adult.

"Think of it as a heaven on earth." He smiled and gestured to the old couch. "Something akin to Neverland... but we just call it the Village." He smiled and I took the seat next to him.

"Neverland with Peter Pan?" I chuckled nervously at the coincidence, but he look as if he had heard it all before. "But really, why did you invite us here? And how did you find us?"

"I like to believe that runaways find me." He paused, looking at his hands. "Everyone here, me included, had families at one point. We all needed someplace to call home until we could make it on our own." He looked up at me, staring straight into my eyes. "This place is a safe-haven, a place for kids that have no one and nothing. Nicole and I keep track of everything that goes on, and when we see someone in trouble we wait for them to run. That's when we pick 'em up and bring 'em here."

I'm guessing he felt the same uneasy feeling because of the way he let out a small laugh and stood up quickly. He was working a tough crowd and he knew it. He walked around the main room fixing random little tcotchkes on the shelves.

This was a lot to take in all at once. This place was a kid's paradise and this man-boy was running the show. He was only a kid and couldn't have been much older than I, yet he was taking care of all these children? No way.
