What qualifies as the worst Valentine’s day ever spent? Is it the fact that you or your significant other is too sick to get out of bed? Or is it because your date stood you up? How about bad sex? Nah, to Patrick Stump, those all pale in comparison to how he is spending his Valentine’s Day. He was spending his Valentine’s day in a courtroom waiting nervously for his boyfriend’s verdict and/or sentencing.

Things weren’t exactly looking good for Pete Wentz, Patrick’s boyfriend. Every single person, with the exception of Patrick, brought up to the witness stand had stated that Pete had committed the murder of his longtime on-again, off-again girlfriend.

Patrick had heard that the DA was looking for the death sentence since she believed that the evidence was strong enough for it. He prayed that wasn’t true. He knew that Pete’s alibi had failed, which he hadn’t believed at first, and that no one had seen him in the time period in which the woman was killed. But Pete wasn’t a killer, right? There was no way that Pete had killed her.

Pete looked over his shoulder at Patrick and gave him a small smile. Patrick gave one in return and looked up when a door opened, the jury filing into the courtroom one by one. The judge banged his gavel and asked for order within the room. “Will the defendant please rise?” Pete stood and sighed, placing his folded hands in front of him. The judge turned to the jury. “Has the jury found a verdict?”

The foreman looked at the judge. “Yes your honor, we have. We find the defendant, Peter Wentz, guilty of first degree murder.” Pete hung his head as an uproar rippled throughout the room. He sighed as the judge banged the gavel again and asked for silence and order.

“Peter Wentz, the court finds you guilty of first degree murder. Sentencing will take place in two weeks. Bailiff, restrain the defendant and bring him to the state prison where he will stay until his sentence. Court is adjoined for today. We will reconvene in two weeks for sentencing.”

Patrick frowned and looked up at Pete. “I promise you Pete I will get you out of this. You are not guilty I know that.” Pete simply nodded before he was pulled away and handcuffed again.

He had to do this. He had to prove that Pete was innocent because it was the truth. Pete didn’t have it in him to kill her. He still loved the fucking bitch, no matter how many times he told Patrick that he loved him.

Patrick heaved a sigh before he walked out of the courtroom and immediately tried to get away from the reporters and press outside it. He didn’t want to talk to them about the trial or anything about Pete. They were always so pushy though and he eventually just yelled at them that Pete was innocent and that he was going to prove it.

Once he got home an hour later, he set to work on trying to prove Pete innocent. He searched on Pete’s laptop for anything that was written or sent at the time of the murder. He smiled when he did find a journal entry written a minute before the supposed time of death (another thing Patrick didn’t understand was the fact that no body was found but the DA said that was because Pete disposed of it in a way that they couldn’t find it.) He bookmarked the page before calling Pete’s lawyer. They had to appeal fast, knowing that the procedures would probably take the entire two weeks.

A week and a half later Patrick and Pete’s lawyer were standing in front of the judge that had proceeded over Pete’s trial. Patrick handed the judge Pete’s laptop with the journal entry bookmarked. “Your Honor, that entry was posted a minute before the murder supposedly happened. There was no way that Pete could have gotten to Jeanae’s house across town in a minute to kill her.” He smiled when the judge sighed and reached for the appeal papers and signed them.

Later Patrick traveled to the prison where they were holding Pete to tell him the great news. He sat there as he waited for them to bring Pete out and stood once Pete was brought into the room they were in. “Babe, you’re free! I proved you innocent! You’re out of here. Your lawyer is taking care of everything.”

Pete smiled for the first real smile since this whole ordeal started and would have hugged Patrick if it wasn’t for the stupid handcuffs. He didn’t understand why they were there when he knew he wasn’t dangerous. He was just glad that he and Patrick would be together again and wouldn’t have to worry about trials or jail ever again.

Two weeks later, Pete and Patrick were relaxing in their living room when there was a knock at the door. Both men furrowed their eyebrows in confusion before Pete went to answer the door, finding two uniformed officers on the other side. “Does Patrick Stump live here?”

Patrick immediately went to stand next to Pete once he heard his name. “That’s me, what is the problem officers?” He already feared what they were there for. He prayed that the police didn’t think he killed Jeanae. Sure he hated the bitch but he wouldn’t kill her!

“We have an arrest warrant for you, Mr. Stump. You are a suspect in the murder of Ms. White.” Patrick paled instantly but nodded nonetheless. Pete however refused to allow this to happen.

“No, he didn’t do it! What would he have to gain from killing that bitch?” Patrick shook his head as one officer arrested him.

“Pete, you do realize who you are talking about right? This was Jeanae we’re talking about. She tried to break us up millions of times and you obeyed her every whim.” He instantly felt his eyes widened. Well, now the police knew he had motive.

Pete tried to reverse the police officers thoughts right away. “He doesn’t mean it like that. He means that she was ruthless and stubborn. She wanted her way and I always gave it to her. What can I say, she always got me with those eyes. I mean yeah there were times when I wanted to strangle her but I didn’t.”

Patrick would have smacked his forehead if he could have. He looked up and gave the officer who had handcuffed him a smile. The smile fell when he saw that the other officer was handcuffing Pete.

Once inside the car, Patrick glared at Pete. “You dumbass! You do realize that we are back to having defending ourselves. We didn’t kill the bitch!”

“Patrick! Get off my back about it! We will figure this out!” Pete sighed angrily before he leaned back against the seat in the car.

Patrick shook his head before he moved as far from Pete that he could get. If only they knew what lay ahead of them.

Two weeks later…

Pete and Patrick had their hands intertwined under the table as they nervously awaited their verdict. They both hoped that the evidence against them wasn’t strong enough to convict them but then again Pete had been found guilty with the lack of evidence before.

They looked up when the jury filed back in, headed by a tall, lanky guy who was the foreman in their case. The judge banged his gavel before turning to Pete and Patrick. “Will the defendants please rise?” He turned back to the jury once both men stood. “Foreman will you please read the verdict?”

The foreman nodded before he looked at Pete and Patrick. “We the jury find the defendants guilty of first degree murder.”

Pete and Patrick both lowered their heads as an uproar broke out in the courtroom. “Peter Wentz and Patrick Stumph you have been found guilty of first degree murder. Sentencing will be as soon as possible. Until then, you both shall be retained in the state prison. Court is adjourned.” The judge banged his gavel again before people started to file out of the room and Pete and Patrick were handcuffed again.

A month later…

The woman smirked as she lowered the paper. The headline read that the men who murdered that woman were both sentenced to life in prison. Oh if they only knew that the woman who they supposedly murdered was the one who just placed the paper down. She took the last sip from her coffee before she walked away. She tossed the paper away as she smirked. Good that should teach that bastard to leave her for a man.
