Chapter 2: Why Were You Running, The Eternal Question.
"Your woods?" I stepped in front of Mike, searching for the source of the voice. "Show yourself... unless you are some kind of coward."
"Who are you calling a coward?" Another voice, a girl's voice, asked from behind us. I turned fast to see if I could locate the person. "At least we didn’t flee the scene of a car crash." She chuckled.
"That was out of line." The boy called. "You have to excuse my friend, Nicole. She tends to get jealous when I avert my attention to others. So back to question; Why are you in my woods?"
"I was running…away." Mike answered slowly.
"Who are you guys?" I said, still a little scared.
"Well, my name is Pete." The first boy said stepping out from behind a group of trees. He was a little taller then I was and his skin tone resembled that of an old Aladdin doll Mike had played with when he was younger. His hair was a dark brown, almost black, and it was tossed above his right eye. "And, as I said before, that is Nicole." He pointed behind us and we turned to see a small, built red-haired girl. She had to be about Mike's age, maybe a bit older.
"I'm Patrick," I said and she sized me up. I returned the gesture. "And these are my brothers Gabe and Mike."
Pete looked at Nicole at my introduction of Mike, as if to make a mental note or to remind him. We exchanged 'Hello's' and then stood there without talking, all of us looking around or at the ground.
"So, why were you running?" Pete broke the silence.
"We just... had to get out of there." I said, looking him straight in the eyes. "How did you know about the crash?" I looked at Nicole.
"We know everything that goes on around here." Pete said. His lips turned up into a lopsided smile. "I'm guessing you're gonna need some place to stay, huh."
"'Trick, I'm tired." Gabe said, tugging at my shirtsleeve. "Can we go sleep?"
"Hey bud," Pete said leaning down to Gabe's level, he moved behind me. "It's okay little dude. You and your brothers want to come stay with my friends and I?" Gabe looked up at me, awaiting my response.
"Man, I don’t know." I said putting an arm around Gabe. I looked over at Mike who had begun talking to Nicole about something. "I've known you for like what... ten minutes?"
"I understand." Pete said, standing back up and looking me straight in the eyes. His eyes were a dark brown and his irises stretched wide. "How 'bout you guys just come over to our place. You and I can have a little chat."
"I think it's a good idea." Mike said, putting a hand on my shoulder. "Where else are we going to go?"
"...Fine, fine," I gave in. Mike was right, though. We really had no other place to go. "But where is your place?"
"Just up in the clearing, a little further." He turned around and began walking, Nicole quickly moving next to him. The two began talking in hushed voices as he led us to our shelter. Gabe had a firm grasp on my hand and Mike walked at a fast pace behind us.
"Where is this place?" I had no clue where our newfound friends were leading us and I had no clue what this place was going to look like.
"You'll know when were getting close." Pete called out. He chuckled softly.
As we kept walking, I began to hear loud noises in the distance and bright lights. As Pete had mentioned; 'when you were there, you knew it.'
