SIFF 2010

I was lucky enough to be gifted a 2010 SIFF pass which allowed me access to screen as many movies as possible. In the end, I was able to see 12 movies.

George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead
Holy Rollers
Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil
The Freebie
The Penitent Man
Mount St. Elias
Air Doll
Fight Club
Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields
Perfect 10
RoboGeisha
Get Low

I really feel like this was the best I could of done, but it would be awesome to try again next year and get even more. The best movie I saw was Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. According to SIFF, it was in 7th place for best movie. Also, next year I'd like to try and vote for best director and actor.

Sasquatch 2010

A killer weekend was had! Kyleen and Jim were my camping partners and we definitely made it work. We left Seattle around 5pm. Traffic was bad over the pass, as per usual on Memorial Day weekend. We finally rolled into the Gorge campground at about 8:15 or so. Another hour later, they have finally lead us to our campsite and we begin the battle for space. There are two girls from Vancouver BC next to us and we immediately form an alliance and combine our efforts. We throw up the canopy and tent and set up the camp and feel very proud of our set up.

Saturday, we get up and start the ritual of a couple drinks in the morning while we pour booze into sandwich bags to sneak into the Gorge. That works pretty well, actually. We get into the festival a little after 1 and start the shit show. Brother Ali, Minus the Bear, Andy Haynes, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Patton Oswald, The Posies, Broken Social Scene, The National, Vampire Weekend, Z-trip. The big highlights were Vampire Weekend, who put on a very fun show filled with energy and Z-trip which was exactly what I needed to get my dance on.

Sunday, We were all feeling a bit shagged and fagged and fashed, it being a night of no small expenditure. It's a little bit harder to get moving, but seeing Luke Burbank was really important to me. We got there just in time and I only missed a little bit of the beginning of his set. After that, the day only got better. The Long Winters, They Might Be Giants, Mike Birbiglia, Tegan and Sara, LCD Soundsystem, Pavement, Public Enemy, Massive Attack and Booka Shade. LCD Soundsystem blew up the Gorge and was the highlight of the festival for me. Massive Attack has an amazing visual show and sounded great. They Might Be Giants were also a big highlight for me, putting on a very strong set. Sunday night, after leaving the show, it was a big explore the campsite night, as parties were going on all night long. A lot more drinking and chaos follow.

Monday, the slowest start of the day yet. Everyone in the camp is definitely feeling the inertia creep, moving up slowly. But there wasn't anyone we were dying to see early in the day, so we take our time. We inside in time to catch the Drive-By Truckers at 3 and from there, it's mostly a day at the mainstage hanging out, leaving just once to see The Mountain Goats. Passion Pit, She & Him, Band of Horses, MGMT, Ween and wrapping up the night with Boys Noize. John Darnielle is very fun to watch and makes the Mountain Goats the highlight of the day, with the other surprise being how much I loved Ween's live act. It is decided that we are leaving in the cover of night and we get back into Seattle around 4 am.

The Iran Election

I knew this was going to be a big deal a couple days ago. The people of Iran excited for the upcoming election. Lots of young people ready to get involved. Early predictions show a close race, with the challenger Mousavi maybe winning outright. Ahmadinejad's presidency was in trouble.

Then the election day comes and there are reports of very long lines and and not enough ballots for the turn out. News agencies were reporting that there was a record breaking 85% turn out. People are charged up and excited.

Today, the Iranian government reports that Ahmadinejad won by a landslide. 63% to 33% with the other two people running not even getting 1% of the vote. Mousavi didn't even win in his home town. There is immediate calls of voter fraud. People take to the streets and are rioting.

It's amazing to watch. Check out this youtube footage. #iranelection on twitter is also good to follow.

Saving the local wildlife

One of the roommates set up a large inflatable pool in the back yard. The window next to my bed looks right at it. Today, I woke up to a splashing sound. I peak out the window and there is a squirrel swimming around in the pool. He kept on trying to climb out of pool but since the walls are inflated and plastic, he couldn't get a grip on the side at all.

I quickly throw on some clothes and head outside. The poor guy was obviously getting tired and was having a hard time keeping his head above the water. I looked around and found a old mop that was leaning up against the house. I grab it and stick the mop into the water. The squirrel didn't quite understand what I was trying to do, but after a little bit of fishing around the squirrel finally grabbed on to the end of the mop. I lifted him out and set him down next to the pool. He just laid there for a couple minutes, catching his breathe and counting his blessings.

I've been updating facebook and twitter from my phone, but livejournal has been a no go.

Anyway, I'm at my parents for the moment, helping by mowing the grass.
People are always saying how great my homebrew is. I just bottled that beer the other day and as much as I would like to just pass it out, I'm pretty short on money right now. Would anyone be interested in buying any beer?

I'm not really sure how much I should charge for a bottle, though. $10 is most likely fair. I would definitely need to make some labels for the beer to play up the name.

Honey Porter and the Goblet of Beer

I finally bottled that beer I brewed way back in december. Part of the delay was because I forgot a couple parts I needed for bottling when I moved, but also I've just been a bit depressed and unmotivated. But I finally did it. All it took was doing the sanitizing at night as soon as I got home from work. Then I was able to just quickly set up and bottle.

Regardless, I am happy to be able to present Honey Porter and the Goblet of Beer. The official release date will be in May.

Time to run and catch the bus. Can't be late for work!

Upheaval

I'm moving at the end of this month. Somewhere. I'm not sure where yet. I've spammed craigslist looking for a new location and we shall see what comes up to the top here. I'm slightly panicked about it, but I think that's par for the course.

Work is stable, at least. I am still mostly dishwashing, but I am grabbing every cooking shift I can. Cooking shifts pay quite well and I wish I could do more of them. Unless they are the lunch shifts. Those don't pay all that great and actually feel more stressful.
