Baroque Art emerged in Europe around 1600, as an reaction against the intricate and formulaic Mannerist style which dominated the Late Renaissance. Baroque Art is less complex, more realistic and more emotionally affecting than Mannerism.

This movement was encouraged by the Catholic Church, the most important patron of the arts at that time, as a return to tradition and spirituality.

One of the great periods of art history, Baroque Art was developed by Caravaggio, Annibale Carracci, and Gianlorenzo Bernini, among others. This was also the age of Rubens, Rembrandt, Velázquez, and Vermeer.

Icons can be inspired by any aspect of Baroque.

Challenge 29: Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo de Rivera was a Mexican painter that predominantly painted self-portraits saying “I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.” While considered by many as surrealist art, Kahlo created an art form fueled by the content of dreams; herself rejecting this label as she felt her work was more a depiction of her reality than her dreams.

Kahlo was well known to have chronic poor health at the age of 6 she contracted polio which left her right leg noticeably thinner than her left which resulted her pelvis and spine becoming deformed as she grew. The main incident that impacted on her health was a bus accident at the age of 18 which broke many bones including her spine, crushed and dislocated her right foot and a iron handrail pierced her abdomen.

Besides the long-term effects of this accent being infertility, chronic pain and the difficulty of walking she was often bedridden, she required 35 operations and while able to conceive children was unable to carry to term. Because of this Kahlo began to paint while bed-bound. Her works featured her physical and psychological as well as her reproductive failure.

"They thought I was a Surrealist, but I wasn't. I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality.".
