Thoughts on Les Miserables, the Movie

So I pretty much have to start with I think the musical is flawless, so most of this will be comparison between the musical and film as well as my thoughts on each individual actor. I'm mostly acquainted with the 25th Anniversary in terms of soundtrack I listen to most often, so if you see a lot of comparison's with that in particular, now you know. (Also Norm Lewis and Alfie Boe are a spectacularly fantastic Javert and Valjean who - not only shine in their own right - but really mesh well together as a forever encircling yin/yang.)

Should probably say, SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE LES MIS STORY.

General Movie Thoughts:

- No really. It was the most adorable thing ever, and she and Hugh Jackman had so much father/daughter chemistry together I wanted to watch all of their scenes over and over and over again.

- They made Thenardier's Colette/Cosette slip up a running gag throughout the movie; I'm still decided on whether or not it stayed funny or was dragged out a bit too long.

- It was extremely graphic in parts, especially in the Master of the House sequence, which included vomit, a guy going to the bathroom, and Santa having sex with an elf girl. The sewer scenes at the end were just pure YUCK. At one point Marius and Valjean got submerged in excrement and were both just literally covered at the end. Also, Javert committed suicide at this very shallow point in the Senne where the water level changed, so there was a very audible CRACK that rang out as he hit the water/river's bottom. (Personally I didn't think all of that was necessary.)

- There was a strange aversion to the word "winter" in the movie's song lyrics. I caught at least three separate instances where they changed "winter" to something else and can remember two off the top of my head. And yet winter itself was still portrayed with snow and ice and everything.
----At the End of the Day: "And the winter is coming on fast, ready to kill" was changed to "And the plague is coming on fast, ready to kill"
----Come to Me: "Don't you see, the winter wind is crying" was changed to something about the dawn IIRC

- A lot of the individual character songs (On My Own, Stars, etc) were shuffled around and lyrics - like I mentioned - were changed, which I didn't mind so much... with two major exceptions:
----On My Own: This was shifted forward in front of One Day More, and Eponine's scenes were rewritten so that Gavroche delivered the letter to Valjean, which - honestly - I didn't mind too much. (She was actually given a much more heroic death, tbh.) The part I didn't like was that they cut out all the opening lines of On My Own, thus changing the feel of the song. You almost need the "The city goes to bed... and I can live inside my head" to sort of open up Eponine's own ethereal dream world, a parallel to Cosette's childhood castle on a cloud. The images she paints with her lyrics are one of a beautiful Paris at night, even in it's loneliness. And THEN that fantasy gets ripped away and she admits to herself her own delusions in just wanting to hope. Starting off with her crying down a rainy street sort of dampens the entire effect of the song.
----Come to Me (Reprise): Towards the end of the story, Valjean is dying and gives Cosette a letter with his last confession on it. In the play he sings "It's the story of those who always loved you. Your mother gave her life for you, then gave you to my keeping." In the film, Fantine isn't even mentioned and it's all about Valjean's past, which felt extremely exclusive, seeing as how Cosette doesn't know much about her mother at this point either. It's only one half of the story and underwrites Fantine's sacrifices.

Individual Actor Thoughts:

Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) - He had really great facial expressions and chemistry with the other actors around him, but I just could not stand the way he sounded. Which sucked because so much of the movie/songs revolved around him. Once again, I bring up Alfie Boe who is phenomenal. (I don't care if it makes me sound like a stuck up fan.)

Javert (Russell Crowe) - I heard a lot of negative things about him going in, but he really wasn't that bad. He had a pretty solid voice. The only downside is that he wasn't very expressive. He can act and he can sing, he just needs to improve on acting through his singing.

Fantine (Anne Hathaway) - NAILED IT. She was a much more quiet and bitter Fantine than I've seen before, but it totally worked.

Thenardiers (Helena Bonham Carter and Sasha Baron Cohen) - If you've seen them in Sweeney Todd, you've pretty much seen them in this. HBC channelled a lot of Mrs. Lovett into her performance as a poor, apathetic, swindling shopkeeper. Lovett was a lot nicer to stray kids though. To give HBC credit though, it's hard to follow someone like Jenny Galloway who I swear is in, like, half of the official recordings ever.

Young!Cosette (Isabelle Allen) and Gavroche (Daniel Huttlestone) - I don't know what it is about musicals and child actors, but they always seem to be able to pick out the best. Both of them were wonderful, and - as I've mentioned - I especially adored the scenes with young!Cosette. Her role was greatly expanded from the play version, and she and Hugh Jackman really worked well off each other. (Gavroche didn't get his Little People song, fyi.)

Marius (Eddie Redmayne) - Pretty solid voice although there was something a little off about his diction. I don't know if it was an accent or what. He positively shined in Empty Chairs though. His lips remind my of Burn Gorman's.

Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) - She was a bit breathy with a very noticeable vibrato, but I thought it fit the character fine. At points it did seem like her notes just cut off rather abruptly. I assume they planned it that way, but sometimes it sounded like "ran out of air" cut off instead of "planned to stop there" cut off.

Eponine (Samantha Barks) - FLAWLESS. I am so, so fucking glad they went with her instead of Taylor Swift. I already knew her from her performance in the 25th, so it was really interesting listening to her parts. (Same singer. Difference adaptation.) A lot of her lines really resembled each other; she was very consistent in her phrasing and which words and syllables got stressed, but a lot of the dynamic levels varied from stage to film.

Enjolras (Aaron Tveit) - Ramin Karimoo is my ultimate Enjolras, since he just emits this feverous passion, but Aaron did a good job as well. Although it was more of "blend in" job than a "stand out" job.

Whew... and I think that's it.

It's not like I use the site that much anyway except to keep tabs of who's uploading what pictures of me, but still. Did they really implement a feature that allows other people to make decisions for your account? Whatever happened to just the basic invite/request? I don't care if users are able to reverse those decisions later; it's still fucked up.

All I can say is that I'm totally picspam'ed out now and will probably just do the minimum for max points in the future, but for now I hope you enjoy. <3

As a warning, there's a minor spoiler for a Clash of Kings (the 2nd series/book) regarding a character who first shows up there, but I couldn't resist it since it was too perfect and you might not even notice it if you don't know what/who you're looking for.

Anyways.

From Across the Narrow Sea

Meanwhile at the Center of Westeros

The Residents of Winter

The Tyrells and Friends

This time it was to (re)cast the characters of Game of Thrones. I put a little spin on mine and decided to do all my recasting with only actors that have been in DW/TW/SJA. The max we had to cast for points was ten. I ended up with 46 because WHY NOT. Of those, 23 are posted here; the rest will be in a second post coming tomorrow.

Also, I'll be posting my thoughts on the progression of Miracle Day tomorrow as well.

Some of the existing Game of Thrones actors don't quite match my mental image. Some of them haven't been cast yet. Others characters - like Tyrion, Tywin, and Walder Frey (OMG DAVID BRADLEY WAS MY MENTAL IMAGE FOR HIM BEFORE THE HBO SERIES WAS EVEN ANNOUNCED) - are so spot on that any other casting couldn't possibly bring them any closer to the character.

Whatever. I recast them anyway.

The Starks

The Lannisters

The Martells

The Greyjoys

Stannis and Friends

Both are a bit... well, different just based on the kind of music I listen to. Expect a bunch of contributions from obscure soundtracks and a lot of moon/sun references as well as "with me"s in the Dany/Drogo mix. Sansa's is primarily divided between "before" and "after" the execution.
Happy Birthday Diana Rigg!

Also, I just realized that today is Dame Diana Rigg's birthday. She turned 73 today (and I'm counting today as July 20th because it still is the 20th here in Hawaii). You do not know who Diana Rigg is? Shame on you, she has been in my default icon for over a year now.

But seriously, Diana Rigg is a fierce woman who used to star in the most awesome show ever, the Avengers. No, not that Marvel thing with Iron Man and Captain America and the like; I'm talking about the original 60's British cult TV series. Here is the opening, which is also my cellphone's ring tone.

<lj-embed id="32" />
And some more flawlessness, just because. Happy birthday, you fabulous woman.

<lj-embed id="33" />

Torchwood: Miracle Day (Episode 2) Thoughts

So I'm going to start of by saying that I was a bit underwhelmed with the first episode of Miracle Day. There was nothing fundamentally wrong with the episode to me, just a bit too much generic "action" for the Torchwood I'd come to known. Yes, the original two seasons of Torchwood were incredibly cheesy and ridiculous at times, but that was part of its charm. The first episode of Miracle Day presented an interesting concept but nothing quite... memorable, so to speak. However I know RTD and Julie Gardner and I know Eve Myles and John Barrowman, so I decided to give the next episode a chance.

And boy did it deliver. Once again I was faced with situations where I started to wonder if that was even remotely possible but quickly shut myself up saying, "Who even cares. It's AWESOME."

In short, "Welcome to Torchwood."

Okay, I'm talking about actual stuff from the episode from here on out, so if you don't want to be spoiled, don't read.

RTD: Character Extraordinaire
Don't get me wrong, I really like Moffat's Who. However he tends to let his plot run ahead of his characters. RTD is the opposite and, man, did this episode let it show. And strong female characters? Completely hit it out of the park. I mean, damn. I have to go by this character by character.

Esther Drummond - I didn't like her character that much in the first episode, mainly because she was being used mostly for plot motivation and in that aspect she felt like a Gwen Cooper 2.0. She stepped into her own pair of shoes this time around and, even though she's a lot more nervous and scared when it comes to things, got the job done.

Dr. Vera Juarez - HBIC. No really. One of the things I'm starting to love about this season is that everybody has a different role; they're not just all FBI shoot-em-up agents. Gwen blows things up, Esther collects intelligence, and Vera is a kick ass doctor in a world where her entire profession has been torn upside down. She's a perfect example of being able to be a strong leader without being necessarily violent or stereotypically masculine. The scene where she essentially reverses the inpatient procedures? Flawless. (Just like her.)

Jilly Kitzinger - Hidden depths. Hidden depths. Hidden depths! Seriously, I will be shocked if it turns out she's not hiding something about herself. Another great character, I literally known nothing about her other than her job as a disreputable PR lady and yet I AM SO INTRIGUED BEYOND WORDS. Her acting is addictive, and I give credit to both Lauren Ambrose and the writing.

Lyn - Another person who I think will get some explanatory backstory, but one whose "mystery" is definitely on the surface. She's ranked a bit low on the casting list, so I'm really hoping the team runs into her more in future episodes since she would make a fantastic villain.

Sure the plot didn't leap ahead by bounds in this episode, but I think that's fine. The first episode was the set up with MASSIVE exposition. This one stepped back a little bit, let us get to know these people who've been caught up in this. A strong character doesn't mean that they have to kick ass 24/7. They can if they want, but the variety of strengths and weaknesses from the characters in this episode really made my day. I can't wait to see how they'll all play out against each other.

Implications of Immortality
I also loved how they further explored what the whole "miracle" really means for the human race, more so than just "we'll overpopulate and run out of food." The rise of drug resistant bacteria, aging without dying, the inevitable demand for painkillers, a switch in concern from "dying" patients to ones with only minor injuries, possible effects on societies with reincarnation or other post-life beliefs... Sometimes people forget how necessary death is for life and I'm glad they're continuing to hammer in that THIS IS A REALLY BAD THING.

Oswald Danes
Hoo boy, his TV interview show was awkward. I didn't doubt that he was faking it; he went out saying "She should've run faster." That is NOT "oh I was too scared to apologize at my trial." That's "oh shit, I actually have to live forever with this now, might as well get to work on that whole 'redemption' thing." In a way, I can't believe so many people in-universe fell for it, but at least Jilly was there to call him out on it (and just be awesome in general).

Welcome to Torchwood

I mentioned how RTD works best with characters rather than plot. Perfect example. I don't even care at this point why Jack was poisoned; all I know is that it gave us this beautiful scene. Would all those things actually work as an antidote? Probably not. But it was awesome and precisely the kind of Torchwood thing I'd been waiting for.

Quippy one liners with ridiculous, often supernatural situations.

Myles and Barrowman really work well together. I almost forgot that in the first episode where they were split up for the most part, but here they're back in their element. Sure, it might not be quite up to the fun levels of the first and second season, but they're definitely more relaxed and open than they were last week.

You find out Americans don't all own giant SUVs?

And yeah. Logically, Lyn shouldn't have been walking and the special effects were not the best.

But that's Torchwood - completely bizarre, cheesy, and illogical at times - just like it always has been.

I'm surprised to say that I have a lot more anticipation for next week than I have right now for "Let's Kill Hitler." Maybe that's just because it's right around the corner versus another month or two, and maybe not. All I can say is that I think I'm going to be well satisfied for the rest of the summer.

So, second of so far two picspams. I might go back and make one for the Doctor's Wife. As it is, I really seem to only want to take the time to make these when I have stuff about the episode I want to talk about.

The pirate episode was fun, but not in a super-fun-times-analysis kind of way... and the Gangers episodes... Don't get me started on them. Most of what I didn't like about this episode can be traced back to those two episodes. Or rather, "Pacing. How Does It Work?" I go into slightly more detail below the cut.

Also, other stuff I didn't like I tended not to include in the picspam since I didn't want to waste time on stuff I didn't like. So it's pretty much all weighted towards the positive incase you're wondering.

Definitely not my favorite Moffat episode, but still pretty good.

Filling the Holes

So, first thing. One of my favorite things about the River being Amy's daughter thing is that it explains the whole remembering part of the season five finale. I said it in a comment on doctorwho and I'll say it again. I don't mind if the reveals are somewhat expected. Heck, based on all the amount of guessing we did, for River to be someone completely unexpected, it would've had to come out of complete and utter nowhere. And honestly? I'd rather have a nicely foreshadowed, mellow surprise than a complete shocker.

But yeah, season five finale. A lot of people asked why Amy was able to remember stuff after seeing River and why River was even there to begin with if the Doctor never existed. I asked it myself. And now we know it's because River was literally created that day on the TARDIS. She was probably fading out of existence, just like the Doctor had, going back through time to her last (and first) day. But even that was enough.

River was Amy's final link to the TARDIS, to the timeline that had been erased. And ultimately together they were able to bring both the TARDIS and the Doctor back.

River's Birthday

Wee! This scene definitely gets better on the second time through, once you realize that River knows Rory is her father and for her it's plain old birthday story time with Daddy.

She is totally a Daddy's Girl. I really hope they have a lot more interactions together after this, but the joy River gets out of seeing him just once almost makes me think that their time will be cut short. And I really, really hope that Rory isn't the "great man" that River kills and eventually gets put in prison for... although it would explain why she continues to stay there instead of breaking out permanently. That would definitely be something she'd never forgive herself for.

Lorna Bucket

Okay. I'll be honest. At first I thought she was young!River, mostly because I didn't catch her name at first and I have this aversion to the name "Melody" as I used to name all of my original characters that after seeing both the Little Mermaid 2 and Pokemon the Movie 2000. So I heard "Melody" and my brain turned off to her and I didn't hear "Lorna Bucket" and I was like "Secret name could be River Song? Why not."

And then she got shot and I was still holding out hope and then they said her name again and that time I caught it and I was still like "maybe that's not her real name" and then she died and I was like "okay... maybe she's not River Song after all."

She would have been awesome as young!River Song. That's all I'm saying. Though she technically was the one who gave River Song her name, so... yeah. Counts for something.

Vastra and Jenny

NEEDS MORE LESBIAN <s>SUB</s>TEXT, KTHXBAI.

But seriously, why did we have two episodes of Ganger stuff when this could've been a two parter with everything less rushed and more built up? Not to mention basic character vs screen time ratio. The Ganger episodes had essentially five new characters and of those only the two girls really had a bunch character development... maybe the grey haired dude with the kid too, but even that was just "he's my son! no, he's my son! oh, I've fallen in acid he can be your son."

This episode introduced a bunch of awesome characters, but only had enough time to show the surface of the awesome (if that makes any sense). I can only hope Vastra and Jenny are there when the series resumes because they could really work the screen time.

Hugs For Everyone!

Going to say it now. This was my favorite scene in the episode.

It was actually a bit odd, looking back. Normally Moffat is better with the plot while emotional moments get sidelined, but for this episode it was the exact opposite. It probably goes back to the rushed pace. Everything seemed so condensed that I found it hard to care about the epicness of the Doctor "rising so high", but what they didn't have time for in terms of set up and actual rushing-in-to-save-the-day conflict they were able to use to fully pad out the... well, emotional moments.

And for the most part, I think it worked as well as it could've. After all, it's River's birthday. Given the choice, I think it's better to look back at episode and remember the emotional moments rather than any great special effects or awesome battle. Plus, there's still the actual season finale, so hopefully that will be better planned.

The Doctor's First Stars

One question I have after this: how did the Doctor get his cradle back? I mean, it wasn't in <s>Sexy</s> the TARDIS when he stole and after that he was an outcast. And then what about his mother? Did she save it for him? Would she have been one of those hoarders that saves everything?

Just all around a little detail that raises so many questions about the Doctor's past and for that - among everything else - I love it.

A Kiss Goodbye

I honestly thought Rory was going to die for real after this. I thought Lorna was River and then she was going to shoot Rory by accident or something and then I would have cried. The moment was totally right for it. But it turns out the whole drama was to set up that the baby was a Ganger instead and Rory lives to be awesome another day, and I am totally okay with that.

He Didn't Remember Her

I really hope this was just a case of the Doctor from her past is just another future!Doctor because if not the Doctor is a total dick. Though another part of me actually hopes that he already met her and just forgot about it; it'd really drive home the fact that he runs into a bunch of people and to him it's the most casual thing ever, but to those people they're huge life-changing events.

And I don't know. I almost like it better when the Doctor gets knocked down a peg and has to face the fact that he's so far from perfect.

Raised to Be a Warrior

So... yeah. After thinking for most of the episode that Lorna was River, when River popped up and was like, "OH HAI, THEY TOTALLY TURNED THE GIRL INTO A WARRIOR," I was immediately like, "Goddammit. Girl into a warrior. Melody Pond, River Song. Why did it take me that long? Oh yeah, Lorna."

Anyways, I'm glad they revealed it like this first and then eased their way into River having to spell it out for Amy. It's like an unspoken confirmation for the up-to-date Who fan and then an actual in-your-face explanation for the casual viewer. And realizing it at one doesn't ruin the other, and - as I said - emotional moments were really the best part of this episode. Go figure.

Also, Matt Smith's kissy face? Priceless. He's all like, "Yeah, I'm totally going to be banging the daughter of my companion soon and she's a Time Lady as well. Did I mention bow ties are cool?" I'm almost glad Tennant left when he did since Kingston's and Smith's chemistry is really special.

Let's Go Shoot My Daughter Twice

Oh Amy. You two are totally going to have a bunch of mother/daughter issues. Leave it to Rory to take the gun away.

Originally I thought the "the only water in the forest is the river" was going to be a reference to Amy's eventual departure from the series. They'd be in a location that had "forest" in the title, and then since "Pond" was a type of water, something would happen that'd make her eventually have to leave the TARDIS/the show. So in that sense, I definitely thought it'd be a reference to something super ominous, a warning if you will.

As it was, it just ended up being another one of Idris' phrases out of <s>order</s> time. Which is slightly disappointing, but hey, I'll forgive it. Lorna made up for it and it's still a beautiful scene.

And speaking of leaving things on a poignant, emotional note...

Subtlety

Oh Doctor Who. Never change.

Gosh knows there have been enough thoughts and picspams surrounding the new Doctor Who episodes, so here are mine together as one post. Icons will be posted in my icon journal sometime later this week.

SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 6x01 AND 6x02 OF DOCTOR WHO

3 Months Later

So the episode starts off three months later. I can understand why Moffat chose to start the episode this way, bringing the audience back in off the cliffhanger through some mysteriously motivated action. Of course, this does raise some internal logic questions. Did they really need all three months to find out what they did about the silence? The Doctor knows the Silence is dangerous, so why did he let himself get captured and let his three companions run off where they very well could have been killed? Which brings me to the Area 51 scenes...

Area 51

The Doctor lets himself get kidnapped and chained up for three months (or at least long enough to grow a beard) and this was necessary for... what reason? The four of them put on a whole Xanatos Gambit that at first seems like it's to fool the American government, but then it turns out Nixon is in on the whole thing too and all he has to do is wave his hand and the whole of Area 51 stands down.

Perhaps you could argue that since Canton wasn't actually part of the FBI or the government, he wasn't able to get in contact with the president and thus needed this whole ruse to get in control again. But if that's the case, why is he given command in the hunt to find Rory, River, and Amy? Why did no one check the bodies after he shot them or the body bags as they were being dragged in?

I'm a bit harsher on this scene than I'd normally be, just because chained-up!Doctor was featured rather prominently in many of the trailers, so it's the kind of thing you start thinking will have importance. Hopefully several other trailer scenes, and one in particular, will live up to their teasing potential.

The Holo Silent

I absolutely LOVED this scene; it's one of those that gets better upon rewatch. You can actually see the point where Canton glances off to the side, sees and forgets the Holo Silent, and proceeds to adjust the Doctor's bowtie.

As foreshadowing, it's also awesome as it's the key to the whole episode. We learn that seeing an image of a Silent works exactly the same way as seeing an actual Silent and that any commands given while looking at a Silent are therefore after subconsciously obeyed. So it pretty much single-handedly sets up the method that the Doctor uses to attack them.

Also, one of the brilliant things about the image working the same way as the actual thing is that no one (in-universe) will ever know exactly what the Silence looks like. They can describe them with words (although no one in the episode ever does that), but that's the limit.

Scooby Doo's Orphanage

Some people found this too over the top to be creepy; I thought it was just right. The horror comes not from the strange message on the wall, but from the fact that the caretaker wrote them to himself but will never remember.

I can imagine him, staring at a Silent while frantically trying to write himself a message to run, each one more desperate and eye-catching than the last, only to forget as soon as he looks away, convinced that it's just grafiti from some no good trouble makers. He's not trapped within a haunted house; he's trapped within his own memory, and he's been there so long that there's no escaping anymore. The ultimate prison of terror.

As for Amy's scene where she suddenly looks down and each time she realizes that she's seen more and more Silents? Easily the creepiest scene in the episode.

Rory and the Model

Nice comic relief scene. Or at least it is if you ignore Nixon and just watch Rory in the background.

"No, I Think She's Just Dreaming"

What is this?! It's been established that the Silence just makes you forget. There's nothing about hallucinations, so this is obviously something different. Perhaps it's related to the girl?

Whatever it is, I hope it gets explained otherwise I'm going to be most disappointed.

Welcome to America... FUCK YEAH!

Canton is the most badass single-story companion since Sally Sparrow. They need to get together stat and form their own version of Torchwood, but it would be more awesome than Torchwood ever was. I don't care if they live 40 years apart. They could team up and steal the TARDIS through time if they wanted to.

Also good foreshadowing in the sense that we learn guns can kill them, further laying the foundation for the eventual "kill on sight" policy.

Totally Unnecessary

So I thought this was rather unnecessary, not so much in the character development part but in the "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING AMY" part. Amy's been captured by the Silence, she's already begged out for the Doctor to come and rescue her, and then she proceeds to give a message that could easily be misinterpreted as a confession to the Doctor?

Sure it's possible, but overall it just comes as a clunky way to get the audience to doubt Amy's feelings despite the entire last season having her work to figure them out as she did. That and the whole Amy telling the Doctor that she's pregnant before Rory. I don't even ship Amy/11, but I could tell it was just one major, slightly cruel ship-tease.

Mid-Danger Flirt

Overall it's kind of like how the Doctor and Rose would give each other pre-Danger hugs, mid-Danger hugs, and post-Danger hugs...

...but with straight out flirting and back against back rubs.

"You Should Kill Us All On Sight"

So... yeah. The conclusion. I loved it.

Moffat has this way of foreshadowing and sprinkling clues here and there that lead up to support his conclusions in the same way that a mystery writer does that I just adore. There's a tiny plot hole in the sense that people not looking at the Silent would still be able to hear the gunfire or other loud killing methods, but considering most people would turn and look after hearing the noise, they'd probably end up forgetting the whole thing.

Definitely not the end of the Silence though. After all, only a small portion of the population saw the tape and not everyone has the means to kill a Silent. Plus, I'm sure that even if the whole planet was out to get them, they'd find a way to be resourceful.

River and the Doctor Kick Ass

This whole sequence was beautiful and flawless. Loved the callback to the Empty Child/Doctor Dances about using the sonic screwdriver to put up cabinets. The Doctor and River really work well together as a team and I look forward to any future fight scenes with them.

What the-?

It's been established that you only notice a Silent when you're looking at it, whether it's dead on or out of the corner of your eye. I don't care if River is super fabulous, why is she able to sense and kill one when it's directly behind her?

Maybe she read Rory's face and could tell from his expression there was something behind her, but even so it'd have been nicer if they made that a bit more obvious.

And while I'm speaking of fabulous...

Canton is Too Fabulous for 1969

It's official. Screw the new American Torchwood. Canton, Sally, and Captain Jack need to find each other and then go off into space and have their own awesome, fabulous adventures like... 40 years ago already. Their combined badassery would explode the universe and then the Doctor would have to chase after them, just trying to catch up.

This Scene Just Made Me Ship It

Holy snap! This whole scene is heartbreakingly beautiful and has converted me into a Doctor/River shipper, something I thought would never happen. I had a crack theory last season that not only were their timelines back to front, but they were exactly back to front so that whenever they met they never had any shared memories. I wrote it off as kind of a "nah" just because they do check diaries and River talked about their whole last night together as if it was with a Doctor that really knew her, but after this scene I can't help but think that my crack theory might be right... ending with the last time the Doctor sees River is the first time she meets him.

But yeah. Beautiful and heartbreaking and oh how I ship it now.

Also, the Doctor's hands during the kiss were so adorable. At one point he even swings them both behind him in an "I'm confused and trying ever so hard to be modest" way that made me laugh and squee at the same time.

Amy's Baby

She's totally pregnant. That's my bet. The rules of narrative drama say so.

I'm glad the reason she told the Doctor first about her pregnancy was a safety concern one. And considering the Void Stuff that eventually coated Rose and how Amy could remember the crack-swallowed people when no one else could, it's a totally valid concern (and one I didn't even think of).

And as kind of side note, didn't the girl's toys in her room look remarkably similar to the kinds of toys in the baby's bedroom in Amy's Choice? I mean, it probably doesn't mean anything and obviously the 1969 toys are old because they're from 1969, but a part of me wants to believe that there's a connection.

HOLYWHATTHEFUJIPJIJCWOEIWLKFITJKDSDJIFKSE?!?!

And the fandom explodes right as she does.

Seriously though, if the explanation for everything lives up to this initial twist, it will be the most EPIC thing in New Who so far.

More importantly, THE MUSIC. Murray Gold loves to foreshadow things with music. When Captain Jack told the Doctor and Martha about his nickname being the Face of Boe, the Face of Boe's theme played. When the Doctor first met Professor Yana, "This is Gallifrey: My Childhood, My Home" started playing. When Rose first appeared again at the start of Season Four, the Doomsday theme started up.

Basically, the music usually means something.

And this time, the same music played here that did when River kissed the Doctor and right now... oh, what I wouldn't give to know what that track title is called.

Anyways, that's it. Hope you enjoyed and perhaps I'll do a similar recap for next week's episode as well.

So, late report is late, but I've been a busy and as they say, "Better late than never." For purposes of size, this will be split into three parts: Doctor Who Meetup (saturday), Doctor Who/Ninja Olympics (sunday), and everything else.

This is my first not!f-locked post in awhile, and hopefully there will be more to come. As my flickr account scrambled the order slightly, I tried to put it back into chronological order as much as possible. Feel free to comment and point out if you're in any of the pictures. (I'm the VoV Amy in the denim jacket.)

That said, it's time for some cosplay.

First off, this dalek was amazing. It even had a voice modulator, even if it was a bit hard to hear in the noise of the con.

Big!dalek meets baby lego!dalek.

Eleven proceeds to examine big!dalek while Donna takes pictures of lego!dalek.

The daleks reign supreme as all the Doctors are simultaneously taken out! It's up to River Song to defend the universe.

This was the least crowded room at the con that day.

All the Doctors gather round the TARDIS. I will forever love that middle Four's expression.

All Doctor's again but with more Doctors, River, and duck!Pond.

Obligatory companion pic. Unfortunately there wasn't one with everyone because then no one would be left to take the pictures.

And extra obligatory Amy picture. Also, I would like to take this time to say, wicked0witch, you truly have a magical, color-changing coat.

So this picture started out as an attempt to just get one of each character that was there (no repeats).

Then blue-suit!Ten jumped in and Jackie quickly grabbed hold.

Then kid!Eleven slid in (quite literally).

And then lego!Dalek came back for its revenge.

But of course, no one ever took lego!Dalek seriously.

BEST CROSSOVER EVER. I know because I have it on a t-shirt. Also, on the right, the Doctor and Donna emerge from the TARDIS only to come face to face with the most deadly of enemies. (TARDIS background photoshopped in by me.)

Second obligatory Amy picture, this one after we lost one of our number.

Doctor/Sonic Screwdriver line up.

Eleven and Amy encounter a Dalek.

Another sequence of pictures; this time Donna helps Amy up.

A hug in true Doctor Who companion fashion.

But what is this?
So I've got three projects due and a midterm tomorrow and I think I'm on a track to success, but more time is always appreciated. I also have three classes today and was planning on going to all three of them even though I didn't want to, but when I checked my school email two of them were canceled. And of the one that wasn't canceled, I needed to ask the professor of the class a question about the assignment anyway.

Yay! And once tomorrow is over, it's smooth sailing until Spring Break.

Also, I'm glad I ignored my alarm clock today and went back to sleep because when I did, I dreamt that I was Amy Pond, the Doctor and I were captured by Sontarans, and then we - and all the other people they captured - were rescued by My Little Ponies. :D

I'm starting a dream journal because of it.

ETA: Oh and there was a part in my dream where my LJ layout changed on me (wtfself?).

Drama for the Sake of Drama

It's been a while since I ranted, right? Well, I found a perfect topic to rant about today.

See, I've always been a fan of Tim Burton. Sure his more recent films have been a little lackluster... but his films of the late 80's and early 90's have always been some of my favorites. The only one I didn't have clear memories was Edward Scissorhands and that's because I only saw it once as a child and - of that - only bits and pieces. So, when I went over to my sister's house this weekend and she had it on DVD, I naturally borrowed it.

And I finally got around to watching it today. And I have some not so pleasant opinions.

So, first off, as I got to the very end of the movie I realized that I had seen the entire thing before, not the bits and pieces like I thought I had. Maybe it's because I didn't remember any character development or continuous plot; there certainly wasn't any of the first and not really much of the second.

I mean, I went into the movie this time thinking it was somewhat of a love story and maybe because I was young when I first saw it, I didn't recognize the chemistry or anything. Well, now I'm older and I still didn't see any chemistry (which shouldn't have been a problem seeing as how Depp and Ryder were dating at the time). I think the main problem had to do with that whole "lack of character development" thing I mentioned.

The characters of the movie fall into three categories: the characters who never change over time, the characters that do a 180 flip after Edward is accused of burglary, and Winona Ryder's character, Kim Boggs.

See, Kim starts out as sort of a popular girl who starts off disliking Edward but is supposed to slowly come to love him. I say "supposed" to; that's because none of her actions - despite the movie saying otherwise - support such feelings. Or, if it is love, it is the most incredibly close-minded and selfish love imaginable.

Basically, a little over half through the movie Kim convinces Edward to break into a house to steal stuff for her then-boyfriend so that said boyfriend can use the money from the stolen items to buy him (and Kim) a van. They set off an alarm, Edward gets caught, and Kim's boyfriend drags Kim away so that they're not incriminated with him. After this burglary, the entire town - who had welcomed Edward with open arms - turns on him. Kim thanks Edward later for not telling on her and her boyfriend, while IGNORING THE FACT THAT EDWARD IS NOW IN COMPLETE SOCIAL EXILE.

Wait, no. Maybe I'm being too cruel. After all, she did mention it when she asked her boyfriend to tell the truth to the police, but he refused and told her that he'd kill Edward if she did. And... that's the end of that plot thread. Because obviously it'd be better to let Edward be hated by the entire town then get the police to lock up her fastly-becoming-ex-boyfriend so that he wouldn't be able to kill Edward regardless of his threats. Also, it's been established that even though the boyfriend is extremely rich (and therefore somewhat influential with the courts), it's also been established that the boyfriend's father has no sympathy for his son's miscreant deeds, so if Kim did tell the police the truth, chances are the boyfriend's father would've made sure his son was no longer a threat.

But no. Kim doesn't say a word, even when the town people start to go on what's basically a witch hunt after Edward. (She's supposed to already love him by this point, BTW.)

Then at the climax of the film, at Edward's creator's mansion, Edward and the boyfriend get into a fight and the boyfriend gets killed. To "save" Edward, Kim kisses him while saying that she loves him, then runs downstairs grabs a spare scissorhand part and shows it to the town people, saying that Edward died when part of the roof collapsed.

The next scene is the same as the opening scene of the movie, of an old woman telling her granddaughter about how Kim never saw Edward again because the old woman is Kim and how she knows Edward's still alive because he's the one responsible for the town's "snow".

So the little girl asks why Kim never went back and saw Edward again.

THAT'S A VERY GOOD QUESTION, LITTLE GIRL. And do you know what Kim says?

She's grown old, and she'd rather have Edward remember how she was in her youth.

That's right. Apparently Kim "loves" Edward, but she'd rather have him preserve a memory of her youth than actually, you know, seeing him again. And the worst part is that it makes NO FUCKING SENSE. Kim did not magically one day grow old. She was high school when she met Edward; she could have waited a decade and still be considered young. The rest of the town thinks he's dead! She could have snuck off in the middle of the night. IT'S DRAMA FOR THE SAKE OF DRAMA. No point! Just... drama.

Think about it. Kim said she loves Edward. It's supposed to be somewhat of a romance. After like... 60 years or so it's still implied that she loves him.

So since she loves him... would she perhaps think of clearing his name with the town after his "death"? Would she visit him every so often so that he'd have at least some human contact? Would she introduce her children to him so that he'd have some people he could be friends with even after Kim's eventual death?

No. She never saw him again. She never talked to anyone about his existence so no one ever saw him again, leaving him basically alone by himself in a crumbling mansion for eternity. And why?

Because she wanted him to remember her as she was when she was young.

Fuck that shit.

That's not a love story. That's an overblown, delusional soap opera.

And... now I need to get to bed since it's past 2AM in the morning.

So yesterday while scrounging around for screencaps for icons, I came across caps for the new Avatar movie... and that got me thinking about the actual show (something that I've been putting off for the past year and a half.)

What I realized is that despite the series' finale, I still love the show to death. And with a year and a half of un-exposure, it's like every episode is new again... even though I have most of them still memorized in my head line by line.

I haven't even watched an episode yet! All I've been doing is going through screencaps! (My sister's fiance has my two boxsets at the moment. Long story.) Well, that and I downloaded an unofficial soundtrack... and even though I haven't seen any episodes since summer '08 I can still pin point exactly where each song comes from without looking at the track titles.

Which is scary, but I guess once you're an Avatard, you're always an Avatard.

SEE SATAN HEAL COTTON!

Behold the Prince of Darkness' true form! What do you mean it's not awesome?!

Sure, the bimbo looks confused. But then you learn that it's kind of like her permanent expression.

Must not laugh... Must keep happy thoughts... Must think of other Michael...

Hey guys? She wants nothing to do with you!

The summary of this series so far. You seriously can't make this shit up...

...wait a sec-

Bimbo: But he's not evil! He just has to look that way so that I can redeem his non-existent soul!

See how strong and wonderful our heroine is! After all, everyone knows that a women's worth is decided upon how many guys like her and how important each of them are. Our bimbo here has snagged both Michael and Satan, so obviously she's too cool for pesky little things like personality and character development.

Bimbo: Oh no! I SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS LOGIC! :D

This page could have almost worked... if it wasn't for the Bimbo calling out "Satan! Satan!" The Catholic in me cannot... keep... straight face...

SEE SATAN <s>ON ICE</s> ANGST.

All I keep thinking is that there must be a God... if only so that he can punish this author for screwing up his canon so... so very much.

Bimbo: Oh Satan! You set my heart aflutter with your sleek long black hair and the twinkling in your eyes. Why... it's almost as if you had a human's personality instead the sadistic demon that you're supposed to be!

*STANDING OVATION*

So... I cut out a few pages from the chapter but... who needs some brain bleach?

So... I saw the new episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent with Jeff Goldblum yesterday. Needless to say, it was awesome. I have a high suspicion that this is because Jeff Goldblum by himself is awesome. I also have a high suspicion that I will be watching all new episodes of L&O:CI when they first come out from now on.

Yay.

Also, Gossip Girl trailer for tonight's episode looks very good. I just hope that the writers won't let me down. (Oh, guilty pleasures. How I love/hate thee.) It's surprising how good they are at taking awesome trailers/set-ups and simmering them down into forty minutes of "nothing happened!argh."

Umm... yeah. I've decided to make a list of all the Discworld books I own/have read/haven't read/etc. 'Bout as boring as it sounds. List copied, pasted, and edited from the Discworld wiki to include just the main novels.

All but six of these were read since Christmas...

I use them as an excuse as to why I'm not getting my writing done, but deep down I know that's a lie.
