Most of the time spent in clinic is letting the medication work, numbing the surgical site before operating. The local anesthesia can take anywhere from 20-30 minutes to take effect.

Patients can go home right after their procedure is complete because they do not have to recover from anesthesia. Recovery instructions will be reviewed with the patient during their procedure, rather than after.

Patients can immediately resume most daily activities with a bandage on the surgical area. Your OSMS surgeon will go over any specific restrictions based on each unique injury and procedure.

2. Recovery

Patients having surgery in the OSMS Procedure Room do not have to recover from anesthesia or sedatives.

Office-based procedures are minimally invasive, meaning that incisions are smaller and less invasive. Post-operative complications like infections are not common because of the compact surgical site.

Because procedures are minimally invasive, patients recover more quickly, meaning they can immediately return to most daily activities at a faster rate (as long as you abide with your restrictions).

Depending on the procedure, there will be weight-bearing restrictions. This is done to protect the sutures from breaking and the incision from opening. Most surgeons use absorbable sutures, meaning patients do not need to have their sutures removed in a post-op appointment.

If patients have hand surgery, they can brush their teeth, eat, write, and type with their surgical hand if they feel comfortable doing so. Patients are encouraged to move their hand/fingers, as we do not want them to become stiff after surgery. Movement also helps with swelling.

Your OSMS surgeon will go over recovery instructions and any specific restrictions based on each unique injury and procedure. For pain management, Tylenol and Aleve may be enough, however, if you require something stronger, you will need to talk with your care team about what options are available to you.

If patients require work restrictions, OSMS can accommodate those depending on your job and daily routines. Some patients may have restrictions as little as 2 weeks, whereas others may have restrictions up to 6 weeks with weight increments if their job requires heavy lifting. fusion-clearfix">

There is not as much pre-procedure preparation required for office-based surgeries. Patients do not need any lab work, pre-op physical, or other testing. This is because there aren’t any restrictions on who can have a procedure in the clinic setting. There are no limitations based on age, health, or condition severity.

Patients can take their medications as normal. At times, this could potentially include blood thinners. Your OSMS care team and physician will discuss whether there needs to be a change in taking medications prior to your procedure.

Unlike surgery in the surgery center, patients are not required to take showers with special surgery soap prior to surgery in the procedure room. However, like a surgery center surgery, jewelry and nail polish may need to be removed from there area in which surgery is being performed to decrease the risk of infection.

Patients do not need to change out of their clothing for surgery; they just need to have the area of surgery exposed. The OSMS team will use a surgical skin antiseptic to clean the skin and prep it for surgery. Once the surgical site is disinfected, the OSMS physician will inject the surgical site with the local anesthetic and wait approximately 15-30 minutes for the anesthesia to take full effect before performing surgery. Once the surgical site is fully numb, patients will be brought to the procedure room, where their skin will be cleaned again, sterile surgical drapes will be placed, and surgery will begin.

The surgeon and surgical technician will wear gowns, masks, and hair covers just as if they were in the surgery center or hospital to ensure safety and keep a sterile environment.

Close

×
Eating and Drinking Prior to Surgery

In contrast to surgery in the surgery center, patients are not required to fast due to anesthesia. Patients are allowed to eat normally on the day of their procedure – we just ask that they avoid eating a large meal right before coming in to avoid any potential nausea.

Patients can eat normally before their procedure because office-based procedures do not use general anesthesia or sedatives; local anesthesia is used, so patients are wide awake. When patients have a surgery done using general anesthesia, they are “put under” which requires more monitoring and could put people at risk of complications if there is any foods or liquids in the patient’s system. Local anesthesia or numbing medicine, is injected right into the surgical site to “freeze” the surgical site area only. Because patients are not being sedated in this scenario, there is no cause for complications if they have food or beverages prior to their procedure.

Close

×
Increased Discussion Time with Surgical Care Team

Even though patients are awake, they are not required to watch the surgery or see the surgical site. Patients have the option to choose whether they want a quiet room, have music on, and/or talk with their team. If you choose to have music on, let your OSMS team know what kind of music you would like to hear during your procedure, and they will get it queued up for you!

As a distraction, patients can talk with their care team. Patients can be informed on what is happening during the procedure, be educated on the recovery process, or you can take the time to get to know your physician – talk about whatever you would like! Being awake serves to ensure the patient has even more time to communicate with the surgeon.

The OSMS care team will typically go through your discharge instructions before you go into the procedure room, while you are waiting for the anesthetic to take effect.

Close

×
Transportation To and From Clinic

With no need to recover from general anesthesia or sedatives, patients having a procedure done in our procedure room can drive themselves to our clinic and back home, leaving immediately after their procedure.

Once surgery is complete, dressings to the surgical area will be applied.
