[New Post] Blogging 101 . Your Dream Reader . Part 2 … Orples

Olivia is loving yesterday’s Blogging 101, writing assignment, which is why we’ve circled back to it, in spite of being a day late. If you read Part 1 of this post set, you’ll understand why this post was divided into two parts, this one being Part 2. Olivia is getting ready to garner some attention, and she can’t wait.

My ‘Dream Audience’? Hmmm, let me see, now… An orple audience would be fun loving people with open minds, opened to the playful side of life. Strategic Publishing has pegged How Orples Came To Be‘ as a children’s book, but I disagree. I think all of my ‘kiddie’ books, and especially my first book, explaining how orples evolved from oranges, are appropriate for any kid, of any age, right up through, and including one-hundred and two! My dream audience would appreciate the lessons to be learned though Olivia’s wisdom and loyalty. The orples help, Jack, their human friend indirectly rekindle his relationship with his father, after his mother’s passing away.  This book starts out sad, but ends on a happy note, with the door having been left opened for sequels. My dream audience would be writing to me, again, begging for more. They would appreciate the encouragement book 2 — ‘The Orples Make A Tree Home‘ gives children to think outside of the box in coming up for solutions as the orples turn their orange tree into an orple environment. And after my dream audience has read books 1 & 2, they would be eager to find out all about Olivia’s schooling in the book, ‘The Orples Learn To Read‘,—book 3 in the series, encouraging children to want to read and learn, in general.Olivia has a lot of spunk, while Oscar is laid back and lazy. I dream that my dream audience will, one day, wake up and realize—orples rule—especially Olivia!  And then they’ll rush out, buy orple books, and start telling their friends, and movie producers, and they will make me as popular as J.K. Rowling. Geeze, I think I need to go take a Valium. Olivia really is beginning to rub off on me, you know. Oh, and while I’m thinking about it, I wanted to mention that all of my books are self-published through CreateSspace  at Amazon, with the exception of my first book, which is printed by Strategic Printing, for the time being. Maybe you cared, maybe you didn’t, but now you know. Blessings to all who have stuck with me and read to the end. .) Olivia, Oscar, and I truly thank you.

[New Post] By Heart

Here is today’s Daily Post suggestion/challenge and I’m sure I’m a day late, but his one is fun anyway, so here goes…. The idea is to recall a song by heart that sticks with you, and why. Song 1… Love Grows Where My Rose Mary Goes.   One of the catchiest songs I’ve ever heard … so from memory, here goes… There’s something about her hand over mine It’s a feeling that’s fine And I just have to say-aaa She’s really got a magical spell and It’s working so well That I can’t get away Well, I’m a lucky feller And I just gotta teller That love grows where where my Rose Mary goes And nobody knows like me And you’ll just have to click the title link if you want to hear the song because I have forgotten the rest.

Quickly, three other songs I recall lines from are these; these lines speak for themselves, and have always stuck in my mind. Seasons change with the scenery, weaving time in a tapestry by … Simon and Garfunkel . from ‘A Hazy Shade of Winter’ You only dance on this earth for a short while   by Cat Stevens . from ‘Oh Very Young’ Someday, I’ll get my life straight … Alan Jackson … from the song ‘Someday’.  This song really hit hard for me, for awhile. Thank God, those days are over. Whew!

[New Post] Daily Post , Oh, The Irony

Oh, the Irony is today’s challenge, so I figure, now that I’ve thought about the challenge for awhile, I will touch on two subjects, both gifts revolving around ‘The Magi‘. First there is the  book: ‘The Gift of the Magi, by O’Henry. The story is about as ironic as you can get. It is the story of a young couple in love. Neither of these young lovers have any money, so they  each sell something to give the other a gift for Christmas; he sells his watch to buy his beloved a comb, and she sells her hair to buy him a gold watch chain. The other Magi, my sister’s gift to me, in 1990, has it’s own sense of Irony. When my sister originally bought ‘my Magi’, he was a rescue horse, and I have no doubt he’d have died early had he not been saved. The horse was literally starving to death. As it turned out, I’m not so sure that it wasn’t Magi that rescued me. He certainly was a rock for me through some trying years. I don’t have Magi anymore, but he will always own a piece of my heart. He was named after The Magi that followed the star when Jesus was born.  Appropriate, since, indeed, Magi was a godsend—to us both.

Magi. the day my sister bought him. He had worms, so she left him in his pasture for the 1st week and carried him oats, hay, and fresh water everyday to avoid contaminating her own fields.

Magi—only about seven years old shown here— the day my sister bought him. He had worms, so she left him in his pasture for the first week and carried him oats, hay, and fresh water everyday to avoid contaminating her own fields.  That cute kid in the forefront is my little niece, all grown up now.

Magi_after Look at what a handsome, happy fellow he turned out to be seventeen years later.  Another seven years have passed since the above photo was taken, and while I don’t have Magi anymore, he is still alive and has a good home on a big farm in Cumberland County, Virginia. He’s retired now, but very well loved by some friends of mine who were thrilled to adopt him.  I think if it had not been for my fine stead in years past, I’d have lost my mind a long time ago. Another little tidbit, only my blogging audience knows, is that Polly, Beth’s horse in Book 2 of my new Bride’s trilogy, is based on Magi’s coloring, although, Polly is written to be a mare, while my guy is a gelding. I’m sure Magi would forgive me if he knew I turned him into a girl. He probably figures the Vet beat me to it anyway.  I wish I’d gotten Magi while he was still at colt. He’d have been a wonderful daddy, and I have no doubt, would have sired some beautiful foals.   To watch the story on you tube, just click the title story–The gift of the Magi video:

Election Day 2014

I swear, I can’t even go vote without the Orples tagging along. It looks like there were lots of people out and about today, doing their Patriotic duty. I only hope we can get rid of some of the fossils on the Hill (slang for Congress and the Senate, for those of you unfamiliar with American political terms), and put some fresh PATRIOTS in our higher Governmental offices.  This Nation is a mess right now.

[New Post] photography 101: Street (Wheeler’s Pond Road, Dinwiddie Va)

This is a street I used to drive everyday to go to work.  It is one of the three roads forming the Five Forks intersection in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. One of the last battles critical in bringing the American Civil War to an end happened on the battlefields surrounding this intersection on April 1, 1865. Eight days later the Civil War came to an end in Appomattox, Va.  For anyone interested, this link will take you to an article on Wikipedia explaining the significance of this skirmish between the North and the South. The Ranger Station, straight ahead, has been demolished for whatever reason since this photo was taken. The barn on the left was still there the last time I drove through this intersection, about two years ago.  I used to own a little piece of  horse property two or three miles from this intersection, and often rode Magi through this area, especially during hunting season, since the entire area is posted ‘No Hunting’. And of course it is always safer to ride roadside when the hunters are hunting and your horses color favors a deer. Some hunters will shoot at anything that moves, but that’s another story for another time.

Olivia Wants To Get Married

I think I’ve lost Olivia to love, or maybe she’s just infatuated with the idea of marital bliss? Either way, we can all thank Ralph over a post he made back in July. Evidently he is a thoughtful person, and was thanking his followers for his 1,000th sign up. “Well, goodie two shoes for him,” is what Olivia told me, kind of huffy like. Personally, I think Olivia is jealous over Ralph’s popularity.  She changed her tune as she continued to read and came across a list Ralph had made. She got to option #4 on Ralph’s list and is convinced he was asking her to marry him.  I keep telling her, he was being playful. She says that ‘I’m the one’ who is jealous. I don’t even know Ralph, although he does have a cool blog. Anyway, I hope Ralph doesn’t get mad when he sees what this silly little orple is up to now. You know, though, it could be since my book series, Brides just came out, Olivia is contemplating tying the knot herself. There are two main characters named Ralph in this trilogy, so maybe she’s got  a crush on one of them? — and now here comes this guy named Ralph, and Olivia is confused. Then again, Olivia is usually pretty smart, but then again, love does make people do stupid things — like marry a complete stranger — sometimes.  I hope Ralph steps forward and tells her, he was just joking. I think Olivia mistook the question anyway, to be honest. if you ask me, I think Ralph was asking her/you/me what ‘she/we’ thought, not what ‘he’ thought. But I couldn’t convince her of that concept. It is not easy being an orple-keeper, you know. You have to stay on top of these two little characters constantly to keep them in check. Olivia_Bride_Oscar was so upset when he found out about Olivia’s plans, he went fishing all by himself. He’s pouting right now, if you’re wondering why Olivia showed up alone. I keep telling Olivia that Oscar and I need her, here, with us. Why, just yesterday they were playing together at Swannanoah. Those two are the best of friends, or so I thought. You should check out some of their adventures in photos. They have a whole section of action shots, just click on the title of whatever post you might care to comment on.  The  Orples Overview category  gives you a better feel in the world of orples, too, for anyone interested.  As you’ll see, we were getting along just fine, then here comes Ralph, and his stupid list. I sure do hope Olivia changes her mind. You’d think she would at least want to meet Ralph before she just trots down the Isle with him. Ralph, if you stop by to visit, let me know if you want me to delete Olivia’s marriage announcement, or maybe your could even talk some sense into her for me. Sometimes she just sort of takes liberties, but always according to the Golden Rule. After all, she is a good little orple, and good little orples, as playful as they are, do respect other people’s wishes.

Descent . Daily Post Challenge

I did a reblog post when I first saw this challenge, and while that post is appropriate, I felt like I was cheating. These stairs might look familiar as I posted them from a different angle a couple of posts back. But this time around, those silly little orples are at it again — Olivia and Oscar tagged along so they could play in the stairwell while I chat with you guys about the daily post challenge. The clock flipped over, over an hour ago EST, so I might be a day late — nothing new there. It’s a good thing that there’s that old saying ‘better late, than never’  —  one of my favorites sayings.

Playing in the tower at Swannanoah.

Playing in the tower at Swannanoah.

The owners are renovating Swannanoah, so one day these old walls will be re-plastered. No matter; the orples don’t mind the exposed bricks, or the missing window panes. They are too busy having fun now that they are free to be whatever it is they want to be. Olivia and Oscar have been relishing their adventures ever since they were set free from their orange tree. Now it seems, I’m going to have to put them on a leash if I ever want to find peace again. I just hope they don’t fall down that descending staircase in the meantime.

Weekly Photo Challenge . Down

This is a page from my book “How Orples Came To Be“. In this scene, Jack and Mr. Zimp have just discussed creating more orples with the intent of experimenting on them.

Mrs. Mouse is hurrying home, so she can eavesdrop on Jack and his Dad as they discuss their plans. The humans are using the stairs to go ‘down’ to the basement.
