No Longer There

When I took this photo, I was basically snapping off memories while out riding Magi one day, about 5 years ago.  I had no idea when I took this shot that the little house sitting on top of the hill would soon be lost to a fire.

The house on the hill ... that was.

The farm’s caretakers lived in the house before it burned.  Thankfully, they escaped the fire unharmed, but they lost everything they owned. The owners of the farm replaced the original structure with a mobile home. A piece of local history was lost forever, and a home was destroyed.  But still, proof exists that the house indeed once stood on the hill.

Monsanto office . shut down for a day . Hurray!

This is an important topic that we should all be made aware of .  Monsanto is a cancer in all of our societies.  They are just plain evil.  Please research them yourselves and you will see what I mean.   Posted below is the beginning of an article I just read and thought worthy of sharing, since Monsanto is a problem for us all, whether you are aware of it, or not.  Read on, please ….

***********************************************************************

While proposed government regulation, previous legal action, and the threat of agricultural collapse does not seem to affect Monsanto’s daily operations, it appears protesters can and do. Dozens of protesters disrupted Monsanto’s California office in Davis, an area close to Sacramento, through vocal activism and calls to shut down the biotech giant with deep known ties into the United States government. Braving the rain, the dozens of protesters — not thousands — were successful in shutting down the entire office for the day.

The response to the activism presented by the protesters highlights just how powerful of a voice even just a few individuals have. If even a small group of anti-Monsanto grassroots activists can pause the entire business operations of a Monsanto corporation hub for the day, imagine what thousands or millions of concerned citizens could do. Monsanto is afraid of public outrage, which is why they are continually trying to squash labeling initiatives that would visually demonstrate to consumers just how ubiquitous their genetically modified ingredients are throughout the food supply. Many consumers now know and understand the negative effects of Monsanto’s creations, and oftentimes are consuming them unknowingly thanks to a lack of proper labeling guidelines.

“We were successful today in shutting down Monsanto,” said Steve Payan, the event organizer.

Okay, so it’s a statue, but it’s not one you’re apt to find on your local street corner. This statue was dedicated to the thousands of children that visit/have visited Maymont Park over the years. It has been in place for at least twenty years now. My own children played on it when they were small.

2.) Our rendezvous to Maymont Park are among the finest of memories I shared with my children.   Pick an outing, any outing.  They were all wonderful.

3.) My parents taught us not to waste anything, to recycle and reuse plastic, jars, tin foil, whatever.  We were also taught to compost.  These habits have carried over, and I still practice them all today.

4.) To think for themselves.

5.) I am enjoying writing and illustrating my orples books.  I don’t really consider it a job, but I do hope my books will pan out to carry me through retirement.  So in that light, my efforts are to make money.  There’s no reason not to enjoy the journey though, and hopefully that joy will show in my work.

6.) Learning as much as I can about internet marketing.  In addition, I’m trying to learn HTML and CSS in an effort to put together e-books and such on my own.

7.) When I was in college, earning my Associates Degree in Architecture, my children were small.  I was a single parent.  Going to school, working, and raising children was tough.  I did have youth on my side, but there were many times I thought I wouldn’t make, and had it not been for Dave as my role model, I very well may never have finished earning my degree.  Dave was a Veteran of the Viet Nam war.  At 23 years old, he’d stepped on a landmine, losing both legs.  Despite his loss, Dave’s ‘can do’ attitude inspired me to hang in there.  He was a wonderful role model, and probably never even knew it.  Every time, I’d think I couldn’t carry on, I’d look at  Dave, and think, if he can overcome his handicaps, I surely can achieve my goals.  I can not (shamefully) remember Dave’s last name, but I will never forget the strength he gave to me, just by being such a spectacular person himself.  Dave and I both graduated with our Associate Degrees in Architecture on June, 13, 1986.  I took pride in having him in my graduating class.

Now onto my Nominations to Carry the torch on down the line.

The people listed below, quite frankly represent those who leave the most comments on my blog, and therefore (including #7 … Judee) are being acknowledged for their visits.  A big thank you to all, whether you are listed here or not.  I appreciate all of my friends that stop to visit.

The Orples Make A Tree Home

Please let me introduce book 2 of the orples series, now available through Amazon.com. I’ve been working on this book for awhile now and finally have the softcover version self-published. The e-book version is still in the works, but should be available shortly for anyone that is interested. Please feel free to click on the link, if more no other reason than to help me up my numbers in the search engines on Amazon. It will be greatly appreciated. In the meantime, here is a peek into my newest book “The Orples Make A Tree Home.

The front cover

The dedication page

My first book “How Orples Came To Be” was published through Strategic Publishing and tells the story, as the title suggests, how orples transformed from oranges into little orange-people. It focuses on loneliness, friendship, belief in one’s dreams, and touches on the bond between the importance of the parent and child relationship. “How Orples Came To Be” begins in the Treasure Tree and ends at the Treasure Tree, but for the most part, the scene is set inside the Zimp household. This blog is about the next book, and the first adventure the orples experience, now that they their dreams of mobility have been fulfilled. Thus the story begins ….

Olivia and Oscar's first morning, waking up in the Treasure Tree

This book also focuses on friendship and fulfilling goals. Now that the orples are not directly connected to their tree, as they were when they were oranges, their needs have changed. They have obstacles to overcome. With Jack’s help, they set and fulfill several goals to turn the tree into a home.

With branches marked, the trio is off to find materials to make beds with. The first order of the day.

The pages I’ve posted here are from my un-edited prototype, so mistakes have been corrected, and in some cases, the text has been reworded. I had a wonderful editor at Amazon, and she really added the necessary polish to bring out the scenes, without re-writing my story. She also corrected my horrible punctuation. What would we do with out editors? But alas, I am getting sidetracked here … back to the story.

Hmmm, What might be found in the tool shed?

Obviously, Jack and the orples are putting their heads together to create a functional little home for the orples to enjoy. They are leaving no stone unturned as they explore the potential materials on hand to achieve their goals.

A trip to the creek.

Once they’ve found a container, it is time to fill it up and make sure there are no leaks.

Searching for food.

You may recognize this drawing from an entry I posted under the subject of landscapes a couple of weeks back. But this is part of the book, so here it is again.
