research on musical emotion - results!

Around two months ago I posted in this community a link to research on musical emotion, now I would like to thank everyone who participated and tell you about some results.
My primary aim was to research the musical features that are correlated with emotions, but this is too technical to discuss here, so I'll just discuss the "psychological" side.
It turns out, that men and women prefer different music based on its emotional content. The difference was quite small, but men prefer more solemn and calm music, while women prefered nostalgic and sad music.

Moreover, listeners seem to define an emotion differently depending on genre.
Listeners of classical music feel "amazement, wonder" mostly when they hear quick, joyful music, while listeners of electronic music feel amazed when they hear dark, awe and fear inspiring music.
For listeners of classical music nostalgia is a sorrowful and tragic feeling, and for listeners of rock term "nostalgic" applies more to quite, slow and calm pieces.

Here is a graph, which shows how music in different genres induces in its listeners different emotions.
Pop music induces mostly tenderness, nostalgia and calmness. Electronic music induces tension, joyful activation.
Classical music induces mostly calmness, solemnity or joyful activation.

Thanks to everyone who participated and if you still want to take part in research, its still going on and probably in the end I will be able to build a better computer algorithm for music classification.

I'm doing research on musical emotion and I can offer you an online psychological quiz that will tell you what you like about music and will help me to find out how similar we people are.

2. Listen to fragments of songs (whole pieces also available) and tell me how you felt (you just need to select from a list).
3. Get feedback on how your musical taste is different from that of other people and which emotional content you prefer in music.
4. Help me researchers to collect research data!

You might spend as much time as you like on it, from 1 minute to half an hour. In any case, thank you a lot!

Woodwind Quintet?

I know this is a stab in the dark, but I'm a clarinettist (for fun, not as a job) and just moved to NYC. I'd love to form a woodwind quintet just to get together every few weeks and play for fun. Maybe give a recital at some point. I've been playing for 15 years, including 4 as a college music major. Are there any flautists, oboists, bassoonists, or horn players out there who live in the city and would be interested?

Seeking a maintainer!

Hello,

I created this community many years ago and then, I'm afraid, I forgot about it. *shame* I'm pleased to see it's looking after itself well though!

Would anyone like to become a new maintainer/moderator? It would make sense to have someone who actually posts regularly in charge - it may give you better control of styles and that sort of thing. I'm no longer much on LJ or indeed involved in orchestras any more (final exams have that effect, unfortunately!).

If so, please add a comment and I'll work out how to make you one.

I was just wondering if any other members had either heard of, or heard the music of, or even played the music of the Scottish contemporary composer James MacMillan?

I'm a big fan of his music - and yesterday at my local library I discovered the full score to his orchestral piece called 'The Confession of Isobel Gowdie'. It was commissioned by the BBC for the 1990 BBC Proms, and is an amazingly dramatic and colourful work.

If you haven't heard MacMillan's music before I'd really recommend it!

A great musician who had a great influence on many composers, including Britten and Shostakovich.

Hello everyone! I am a music educator with emphasis on instrumental music (band). My grandmother passed away today and in the will my father is inheriting a violin. I am fairly certain that it isn't a high-end violin, but he was listed in the will as getting the more expensive of the three she had.

Of course, everyone is trying to trick him with the brands and they mentioned a brand called "Mark Avalon". I have never ever heard of this so I may be referring to you guys for some information. I am driving down tomorrow to visit the family and to see the violins.

I am thinking that the brand of the instrument would be inside the instrument itself. They are nervous that my "Aunt" had switched out the violins out so I guess I'd be the one to make sure they are in their correct cases.

Has anyone ever heard of a "Mark Avalon" violin? Am I correct in thinking that this isn't a very good brand?

EDITED to add: He actually picked out a violin made by Marc Laberte. Does anyone have any information about this violin maker?

Music Store Improvements...

Hi Everyone,

I am currently doing a finishing my Business degree...One of the units that I have to do this semester requires that I somehow change the way a music store operates. Seeing as everyone here would be familiar with music stores, their likes and dislikes of these...Does anyone have an opinion as to how the music stores we have now can be improved. Either, their outward apprearance, the products they sell, whether or not they should be selling items not currently available.

I would be very interested in hearing your opinion. I am only new to this site...so if you can come to my LJ, and post an answer...or email me...whatever is easiest, then I would most greatly appreciate any of your views on this topic.

Guitar Writing Community Plug

It has often been said that the guitar is the most difficult instrument to write for. With this in mind, I have set up a new community, where composers and arrangers, be they guitarists or non-guitarists, can come to ask questions and give answers on any aspect of of any version of the guitar. It is here: guitar_writing. The reason I am posting this plug to this community is being I think the guitar can be a very effective orchestral instrument, and because a lot of the members of ths community will surely be interested in orchestration; and a guitar may very well be part of their score.

I do hope something productive will come of this.

So this community's been kinda quiet recently, so let's have a debate.

Who's the greatest living composer and why?

My vote goes for John Adams. Here's why:

-Adams truly created his own style, borrowing bits and pieces from minimalism, post-romanticism, and jazz.
-He seems to be leading the charge away from serialism (which I thought went entirely too far... too much math and not enough emotion).
-I like the fact that his operas deal with events that occurred within the last 100 years (Nixon in China rocks!)
-His pieces are incredibly fun to listen to (check out Short Ride in a Fast Machine or Gnarly Buttons and you'll see what I mean).

What do y'all think?
