First Tutorial~

We’ll go from to this

01. First of all, start with your image. We’ll be using the super gorgeous Kuran Kaname from Vampire Knight (okay, not super gorgeous because Zero is still my first love!). Crop it into icon size. Now, it’s time for coloring.
02. Duplicated your base four times. Set the first two bases into Screen 100% and the third one into Screen 30%. Well, you can adjust it in whatever you like.
03. We still have the last duplicated base. Set the last duplicated base into Softlight 100%. Adjust it if still looks dark or light.
04. Now, it’s time to colorize this boring icon. Make a new layer and fill it up with #6DCFF6 and set it to Saturation 30%. Again, adjust it if you like.
05. Then, go to the toolbar and select Layer. A dropdown list will come out. Select New Adjustment Layer then choose Selective Color. You can play around the colors if you wish to. Here is mine:

REDS:

Cyan: -100
Magenta: 0
Yellow: 25
Black: 0

YELLOWS:

Cyan: 0
Magenta: 0
Yellow: 50
Black: 0

BLUES:

Cyan: 0
Magenta: 25
Yellow: 0
Black: 0

06. Make a new layer and fill it up with # 003562 and set it to Lighten 100%.
07. Duplicate the original base and set it to Softlight 80%. Adjust if you wish.

Here are other examples. I played around Selective Color and the opacity in these icons so don't be surprised:
